Bracken stared blankly over at the grey buck as he announced his displeasure at the doe's words and laughter. He had not found it particularly offending himself, but no matter.
"Trust me, a torn ear does not impede one's hearing that much" he said with a little smirk. The Chief knew, after all. His ears were far worse off than the old grump's.
"Ah... yes. Cocklebur is always itching about something I'm afraid" Bracken then remarked in a knowing voice. Bracken would agree that the big buck made a fine captain, but he was intimidating... although hardly to the chief. He knew a few ways to put him in his place.

Blushing, Rosewood tried to explain. "I didn't mean... I mean... it was no disrespect to those of you with such things. I know they don't unless extremely damaged." Boy she was a bumbler sometimes. How careless to make a remark like that! Her and her sharp tongue. It's a miracle really that it hasn't been bitten off yet.
At Brackens change of subject she nodded her head. "I've heard whisper of a few does wanting to put him in his place this spring. He might want to be more wary of them than elil!" She laughed to herself. Females and their gossip! Sitting back a bit, Rose took her hind leg and scratched at a small bite she'd gotten in the morning. It had annoyed her all afternoon. Settled, she sighed a bit.
" I hope i'm not boring you. Or ruining what you might want as quiet time to yourself. " The thought had come to her that perhaps he'd not want attention all the time. And she knew herself to be odd company at best sometimes, if at least amusing to some.

Bracken chuckled at Rosewood's attempt at an apology and shook his head, tattered ear flapping a little. "No need to worry, its fine." The comment hadn't bothered him in the least.
However, he tuned an ear on what the doe said next and this time let out a hearty laugh at Cocklebur's expense. "Nothing would make me happier!" he replied honestly with a buck toothed grin. It figured it was about time someone put the big buck in his place other than himself.
"No no, not at all. If I wanted solitude, I wouldn't be here amongst the rest of the warren." He usually retreated to his burrow when he truely wanted to be left alone. He certainly didn't mind company every now and then.

Laughing, she could only imagine one of the bossy doe's putting cocklebur in his place. It would take a tough one to keep that one busy. She never has quite understood him. Being fierce all the time is one thing, but he was just... oh, not for her. Her heads may be up in the clouds all day, but she needed a steady rock to keep her grounded, or she'd float away. At least, that was the theory.
"Well it's good to hear. I'm told i'm odd sometimes, so i like to make sure." She said laughingly to Bracken. "If i'm not pestering them for their stories, i'm making a fool of myself with my quick tongue. Either way, Frithrah know what to do with me!" Continuing to laugh, she blushed a little looking around. Was it appropriate to be this open with their chief? Ahh, she didn't care. She liked him.

Buckthorn continued to listen to the doe as she talked about him, feeling increasingly annoyed. What kind of warren was this? More importantly, what kind of doe was this? She certainly didn't seem too consistent to him. It seemed that was all too eager to issue a rude comment to him, but when the chief replied to it, she had been apologetic.
"Quite prepared to lay your toungue loose, and then retract your words simply because you are in the prescence of our Chief?" He grunted. "If you are trying to win favours and suck up, I suggest doing so less obviously in the future."
He was half tempted to charge up and cuff her now. While he wasn't an aging buck by any means, he had certainly been around long enough to kick and scuff many a rabbit into line. He was big and bulky and well filled out - worthy of an Owsla position if he wasn't impeded by the fact that he was blind in one eye.
The doe annoyed him. Never in his seasons had he encountered such words as the female had spoken just now - does knocking a buck into line? It must have been rubbish. It certainly wasn't in any previous warren or in any previous rabbit hierachy he had been a part of.
"What bollocks." He grunted finally. "Stuff and nonsense."

"Hm... well, I may not be offended, but I do believe you upset old Buckthorn over there. He is your warren mate after all." Bracken would rather see everyone get along than have to try and calm down any quarrels.
"And as much as the thought amuses me, there's not a doe in this warren that can put dear Cocklebur into place. He is your captain, and deserves respect, from everyone." The chief raised his voice a bit to make sure his comment about Cocklebur was heard by more than just Rosewood. After all, if there was no respect for the higher ups, than the warren social structure would quickly fall apart. No matter how intimidating or sometimes an a**, Cocklebur could be. He was the most fitting rabbit for the job.

Turning around and fuming toward the grey, Rosewood glared at him. "I lay loose my tongue to those that decide to do the same toward me. Yours were the first remarks made in hatred and disrespect, not mine. " All her fur twitching, she added," And as for winning favours, who was it puffing themselves up like a prized rooster at some farm? Don't insult me, and then expect kindness in return. That is not how it works."
Spinning toward Bracken, notably putting her back to the grey buck, she ignored his last little comments, and hoped he'd wander back off to whatever hole he'd dug himself out of. How dare he insult her, and then expect her to roll over in obedience! Still twitching with anger, she listened to the chief make his little speach.
"I'm sorry, but if he thinks he can go around treating rabbits like that, he'll soon find no friends among us. I made my apology, and we both admitted to it having no malice, yet he persisted." Sighing, she changed subject back to Cocklebur.
"I do believe you're right. I don't think that will stop some of them from trying however. " Rose laughed a little. It would be interesting to watch if she had the opportunity. "And it may be that he chooses one of his own. Some meek little doe that he can control. He's been itching for more owsla. Who better than his own litter once grown." Pondering it a moment, she sat and nodded. It would make sense for him to pick one he could control easily. It would make him more at ease with the whole thing perhaps, being so 'close to home' so to speak.
Wiggling her whiskers and giving them a little scratch she smiled. " Either way, some kits would be nice to have around. I see already a few rabbits pairing off. It might be a very good year.

"Hraka." Buckthorn grunted. "If a male showing off his virility is offensive to you, doe, then you will never lay a nest to breed any kittens. And then you will be useless to this warren."
He was amused as the female turned her back to him. He made another loud aggressive thump on the dry soil before casually moving off. He had better things to do than trade harsh words with another rabbit.

Rosewood shook her head in disgust. "Some rabbits just do not have it all put together. His last statement didn't even have any bearing on the conversation." Sitting back, she sighed. " I'm sorry you saw me like that Bracken, but when rabbits can't follow what i'm saying, i get snippy. I obviously never took his puffing up as an insult. The words however, i did. Such hostility over nothing. " She sighed again. Her afternoon wasn't shaping up to be what she had wanted it to be.

Bracken decided not to comment on Rosewood's words until she spoke of kittens. "A good year would be nice, especially considering the last. Frith willingly, our luck might turn."
However, Bracken frowned and then sighed as Buckthorn and Rosewood went at it yet again. Practically a lover's quarrel, he thought with some bemusement. The rabbit shook his head. Almost as bad as an eager buck looking to join Owsla, was a young doe thinking she knew everything.
Bracken looked back to the doe and tilted his head slightly to the side, brows lifting at her words. "Forgive me for saying so, but who made you Captain? If he is truely out of line, the Owsla will put him in place. You'd be best to remember that."

Roserain He swallowed, meeting her glace as she spoke. Nuthatch allowed himself to feel a little pride at her compliment, his ears twitching with it. Then she caught herself talking about kittens and suddenly stopping herself. He grinned slightly. It was that time of year, and he couldn’t blame her for having such thoughts on her mind, he was finding it harder and harder not to stray to the same topic himself.
“Thank you, I should hope so. I plan to make it into Owsla.”
He lifted his head slightly, not sure if he should approach the other topic, or even how. His stark blue eyes searched hers for a moment before commenting.
“And soon there will be the marli, and then kittens, and I’d find it an honor to protect them and the warren; Frith willing.” Relieved that the buck didn't think her a silly kitten-starved freak, she relaxed and continued to nibble on the clover. He seemed to understand... but with so many other rabbits around, and some with quite serious conversations... this didn't seem the right time. She changed the subject.
"The Owsla. What a fine position it must be. The entire warren trusts them, good thing they never let us down. I am sure you'll never let us down." she looked up into his blue eyes, shocking at first, but they were as warm as any other rabbit's. "And with those kittens running about - great fun, don't you think? And mighty good for the warren as well."

A little away from everyone, Thyme sat by himself, chewing on some clover and trying his best not to eavesdrop on the conversations that were going on around him. He was sure he wasn’t familiar with many of the rabbits that he could see, apart from the chief of course, and maybe there were a few recognizable faces, but no one he knew well enough to call a ‘close friend’ anyway.
The conversation that the chief was having with a doe and a rather grumpy buck, had perked up his interest in particular, and he tried not to laugh at several things that were said, “Not my business, I shouldn’t listen in,” he told himself quietly, shuffling away slightly so that they didn’t think he was snooping.
Thyme didn’t mind being on his own, he found it peaceful and it gave him time to think. He watched as a butterfly fluttered past him, and sighed happily "It truly is spring” he sniffed at a nearby wildflower, and smiled for a moment before sneezing. Feeling slightly embarrassed, he licked his paws and cleaned his face “Hmm…might avoid those in the future…” He resumed chewing on clumps of clover, and looking around him for something interesting to do.

Looking at Bracken, her head cocked to the side questioningly. " He started the insults with me. I wasn't aware we went running to Owsla for that." Looking back toward the direction the buck went she continued. " And i'd never presume to be captain. He insulted me over-zealously about something not meant as an insult, and i merely defended myself."
Rosewood sat back on her hind legs, taking advantage of a sudden breeze to cool her belly. She did enjoy spring. Closing her eyes for a moment, she just sat there in silence, feeling her fur moving about, and hearing the chatter of a healthy warren.
"You think i speak my mind too eagerly." She said, not opening her eyes, but returning back to a normal position. "They all do." Eyes open, she stared at the ground, as if able to see the rabbits still under the ground, sleeping or socializing in the vast tunnel system.

Bracken let out a long suffering sigh as Rosewood completely missed what he was trying to say. Although his attention was momentarily diverted by Thyme's presence and comment, causing him to nod absently, "That it is."
He looked back to Rosewood, for it seemed he would have to lay it out plainly. "You act as if he is the only one to blame. You did laugh at him first." Bracken's voice at a lower level to keep from Buckthorn overhearing, "There's little more painful to a buck than a bruised ego, my dear" Bracken said with a tiny smirk. "A little more tolerance isn't too much to ask."

Thyme heard Bracken's voice and turned to face him. The comment seemed to have been directed to him. Had he seen him eavesdropping? "Oh, I’m sorry Sir, I didn't mean to listen in. I must learn to control my big ears" he lowered his head, feeling quite ashamed. "I don’t normally do that, it’s not a habit of mine. I didn’t mean to stick my nose into your business like that Sir" Thyme wasn't always so apologetic when he upset others unintentionally, but this was the Chief, and he had a lot of respect for him.
