A mother mouse and a baby mouse are walking along, when all of a sudden, a cat attacks them. The mother mouse goes, "Bark!" and the cat runs away. "See?" says the mother mouse to her baby. "Now do you see why it's important to learn a foreign language?"

Alright, so... everybody here who's a student of the Korean language obviously had to get past the alphabet-learning stage. Anybody got any advice for somebody learning a foreign language that uses a different alphabet? What did you do to become more familiar with the Korean alphabet?

Well, I started learning Korean this summer, and I love it.

One tip is that the Korean alphabet has vowels that all have similar characteristics, so they're easy to identify with a bit of practice.

The hardest part of learning it so far is just the pronounciaton exceptions, like how one symbol is changed due to it's position in the sentance/word, or depending if it's near a vowel or not. Just needs a bit of review.

But [from what I can tell] the sentance structure doesn't look too difficult. Ish. And I've learned they ask some questions ending in "ka" like Japanese; an easy way to make sure I remember.

Pretty much, the best thing to do is flash cards, and I labled everything in my barracks room with a Flash card with the Korean word for it. Most languages will also have some sort of song for their alphabet, like Persian-Farsi uses Ode to Joy. Sadly, I don't think Korean has one.

Looking for somebody to translate a Korean webcomic for GOLD

Otay. The webcomic is only 10 pages long, so you don't have to do that much. xp

I don't really want scanlations, I'm pretty satisfied with simple translations only 3nodding But I want some explanations too (if its necessary to understand whats going on). PM me for the comic pages / more details.

Oh. The important part: I'll pay 7.000g (HAGGABLE) when you PM me with the finished translation. sweatdrop

Here is a page from the comic (in case I knew wrong and its not Korean xd ) Original size is bigger.

I would love to learn Korean fluently. That way I can listen to Lost on Sun and Jin's episodes without having to stare at the screen or wait until it comes on DVD and read everything. Anybody fluent? And if you are, can you teach me?

Could someone please translate "Welcome to my room" for me if you can?

I'd greatly appreciate it. biggrin
"Welcome" is "환영합니다" (pronounced hwanyeong hamnida). "Room" is "방" (pronounced bang). And "my" is "내" (pronounced nae).

So, if I were to put it all together, it would be "환영합니다 내 방", but I could be completely off on the grammar.

So, I know the alphabet's been kind of a hot topic on this thread (and this thread has been kind of dead... sorry to spam it to the top?)...

Hangeul is the "generally promoted by the government" spelling of the writing system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul

I had never really thought about it much, but I was looking around some sites doing research and I found the Korean page, and noticed that there was a separate link to the writing page (and there's anotehr one for pronunciation, too), so I decided to check it out... That's a pretty neat system, I think, with the letters arranged into chunks. I think I'll try that with a conlang sometime... muwahahaha. Anyways, thought I'd comment on it. Sort of expected this thread to be on the first page.

@Charmaynard: Wonderful story

Anyways, I really really need to get back to work.

I'm planning on studying abroad in South Korea next fall. *crosses fingers and saves money* I haven't started studying Korean yet. sweatdrop I plan to soon, just've been too busy with other things to start.

My friend did give me a link to a learn Korean site. I've only glanced at it, but it looks helpful. It also gives a short background to the writing system, too, which I thought was interesting.

http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/

I currently know very little Korean, but I can recognize it when people are speaking. sweatdrop I know no grammar - just random words. Hopefully I'll start my studying soon, though it depends on how my Japanese studying goes this semester. Might have to wait until summer to start.

Happy to see other people interested in Korean, though. 3nodding
