"That's pretty cool," Ignacio agreed. Then he paused, considering. He seemed to want to ask something but wasn't sure. Finally, he shrugged. "Your dad's cool, too, though. Shame that lady doesn't like him."

Antony shrugged. He had a new respect for his dad since the blade had showed up. As well as a hint of aw. That and... well... he kind of understood why Ice didn't like him, now. "Yeah, I guess. But things aren't bad the way they are now. I don't think he's unhappy, even if she doesn't feel the same. Then again, I doubt I'll ever understand love."

"I don't get it either." Ignacio tilted his head back to stare at the ceiling. He wrinkled his nose. "What's the big deal with it, anyway? It seems too much trouble if you listen to the TV and books and movies and things." He paused and then dropped his chin to look over at Antony. "But I guess lots of people do it, anyway. Did you know that Nana and Papa have been married thirty-five years? That's a crazy long time."

"Especially for us," Antony agreed. "I'm barely over a year old. Honestly I think the fascination people have with it is because it doesn't make sense. But how should I know? I've never even had a girlfriend."
Briefly he thought of Manuela, then he shoved it out of his head. A few shopping trips did not a girlfriend make. And she tossed him over for Harper quickly enough. Then there had been Delilah, and Devi, and--

"Eh, I've never had a girlfriend either," his friend quickly reassured him. "Unless we're talking, like, a girl who's a friend. Then I have Riley. Who I bet thinks you're right about love, too. So she's just a friend-girl." He wrinkled his nose again. "That sounds really stupid. Anyway... You get along with girls so what's the problem? They like you and that's better than love. Maybe."

"Exactly," Antony said, adding silently, 'except for the sex, that is.' But he was positive that Iggy hadn't gotten to that part in his life outlook.

Quiet settled in for a few minutes as Ignacio focused his eyes on the television screen. Suddenly, though, he sighed and turned back to Antony. "Do you really like-like girls, though?" he asked quietly.

"With a few exceptions," Antony said honestly, "I prefer them hands down to men. They smell better and tend to be less sloppy. If there is a perfect woman, she would be a lot like my aunt, Missy," he added. He still had a crush on Missy, to be honest. Not that he would ever take her away from Tyler.
But... there was no denying she was a 10.

Ignacio nodded as if he was totally following the logic. "Girls definitely smell different," he agreed. "They have more types of smells, too. Our landlady smells like Pinesol and cigarettes. The girl that Dad talks to at the coffee shop all the time, she smells like cookies. Good ones. Y'know, like chocolate chip ones." He considered his memories, comparing things with other things. "Jace smells like an overheating engine. Riley smells like, um... toast with cinnamon. Like Dad makes for me when I won't get out of bed. That girl Delilah smells like Tia Gerry's greenhouse."
He paused again, sniffed, and looked at Antony. "You smell like the hospital if it were really, really clean. Like someone cared enough to make it nice."

He blinked. "Well thanks, I think," he said. Then it occurred to him. "Like death?"

Ignacio considered this. Then he nodded before shaking his head. "Kinda but I think it's more like... You smell like not-life."

"Remind me to ask you over the next time I lose something," Antony said with a sigh. It wasn't like he could argue with that description, after all. It was just one he WISHED he could argue with. "Your nose is astounding."

Ignacio grinned whitely, showing off his sharp and slightly fearsome canines. "It's pretty cool, isn't it?" he laughed. "It's gotten better lately. I couldn't do this before. Or, at least, I didn't know how to work it. I couldn't tell about it. It drives Dad nuts because, if he's making something I don't want for dinner, I just don't come in the apartment."
He leaned over to add in a whisper, "And my ears are getting better, too. Not like hearing spirits good but good enough."
