:::She scootched so that their sides were flushed:::
Tell me about your time... I mean, I know about your time, but tell me what your life is like in it.

Well, I'm a prosecution lawyer for a major law firm. I specialize in trying to put bad people behind bars.

:::Cora tilted her head to one side, and lowered her brow:::
Behind bars... like the one in the brink?

Oh... prison. :::She jogged her memory of the evolution of the penal system, and imagined what it looked like by the 21st century:::
In the time that I was from, I also enforced the law... see? :::She pointed to the golden star above her heart::: This is a very old symbol, representing the law, correct?

That is correct. Do you know the origin of the symbol?

mmm...
:::She thought hard. Symbolism was not a very important concept to the people of her time, except for when used in alphabets. Otherwise, symbols like the one she wore were few and far between:::
No, I don't...

The Wild West. Lawlessness. People went west to settle the land and live in freedom, but criminals were free to ravage as they saw fit. That star was given to sheriffs, the people that were chosen by the settlers to enforce the law.

I see... Do you have a 'star' too then?

No. I don't have one. I don't enforce the law, I just uphold it. A sheriff is like a police officer. They arrest the criminals. Lawyers process the criminals.

:::At the sound of the words her shoulders grew stiff, and she leaned away from Alex in shock. Her pale face looked back at him:::
You.... you process people?

I process criminals according to the law. That means I convince a jury that what a person did was wrong.

Oh..! :::She unwound in some reliefe. She wasnt sure what he meant, but it didn't sound like what she thought it was:::
Processing...has a very different meaning in my time. They where going to process me. That is why your father made it so I could never return...

*Alex's expression quickly changed to anger*
Tavin.....
*JUst then the timer started beeping in the kitchen, and Alex snapped back to himself*
Just a sec, babe. I've got to stir things up in the kitchen, and then I'll be right back out, I promise.

:::Hearing Alex speak his father''s name in that tone of voice reminded her that the Captain said his son hated him... she couldn''t understand why, but then again, she knew that there must be circumstances she was not aware of. The whole thing bothered her though...
She nodded to Alex as he got him, and began to think of how to muster the courage to ask him about it:::
