I was looking around and I found this site that has a more detailed list all of the cheese brands that don't have rennent in it. biggrin

Contrary to popular belief, it turns out that most cheeses aren't vegetarian. There is an enzyme used in many cheese and cheese products called "rennet" that is used to make the milk coagulate. This enzyme is obtained by slicing up cow and pig stomachs and grinding it down into the milk. Even a lot of chips with cheese flavorings have a listing of "enzymes" in the ingridents, which is often rennet.

I'm actually pretty upset at this. I had no idea that they used parts of an animal in the formation of most cheeses. Here's a website with further detail and a list of vegetarian and vegan cheeses.

I'm sorry if this is a repeat, but I was just so blown away by this. I feel terrible that I've been eating it.

What do you guys think? Is this completely old news that I somehow missed?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I looked everywhere for information on enzymes, and I couldn't find if they killed animals for them. For awhile, I saw that cheeses had enzymes, and looked up that dairy products got them from animals, but I didn't know if they killed the animals or not. Now I know that they aren't vegetarian.

I found this out awhile ago, and was super upset D: Because, I love cheese (but, of course, I love animals more), and just knowing that it is made my killing pour animals breaks my heart! This whole time, I thought I was vegetarian. But, I cannot turn back time, so all I can do now is not eat things with enzymes with them. There are some types of cheeses, in macaroni and stuff, that use "non-animal enzymes", and for that, I'm grateful.

If the ingredients list says 'enzymes' or 'cultures' but doesn't specify, does that generally refer to rennet as well? I noticed that some packages are specific and some aren't. Also, do other diary products such as cream cheese, feta and ricotta contain rennet?

I've asked this question on another board as well and someone mentioned that most modern cheeses (unless they're something fancy and expensive, and I assume excluding parmesan) use plant-based rennet. Is this true?

Hopefully someone knows. Google's not very informative.

Before I went vegan, I actually got more expensive kinds so I was sure it was vegetarian... I'm not sure this is true.

Edit: Also I have heard that certain kinds of cheese (for some reason) have to have animal rennet.

Well even if milk is really good for you because of the calcium, I only use a little bit in my cereal for breakfast when I run out of ricemilk(its yummier!). I perfer orange juice(your body actually absorbs and uses more of the calcium from OJ than it does milk, lol)
I want to give up cheese (or at least switch to comething like tofu cheese(cheese substitute) but my mom would never go for it. D= she's always yapping about how tight money is, and i'm not a vegan(tho borederline as i may be)
And if you read labels, you can find a safe cheese, just make sure it dosen't say enzymes or rennett or rennin. you should be good to go then! =3

Milk actually isn't "good for you" naturally. They fortify it with calcium and vitamin D. You could go outside and be in the sun for 15 mins for your vit. D, and eat a spinach salad for your calcium. smile

I know that now. :3 I've been a vegan since october! smile
