The very first page of the story:

The Blood-lit Path
I had all I could ever want, a best friend to share all of my secrets with, joke, laugh, hang out, have sleepovers and inside jokes with. I had a loving family, a fluffy shiba inu puppy named Ryuu, I may not have been popular, but I wasn’t hated. Besides, if being popular was to be a stuck up snob then I didn’t want to be popular. But it all came to a screeching halt, my life, my happy life ended abruptly, it was permanently altered forever. The red lights staring and glaring; following and stalking; protecting or attacking, I no longer knew what to make of it. But I would later know, maybe before I even realized it.
“Kita! Isn’t this top adorable?” Brook and I were shopping for a party next week. Twirling it around so that she could picture it on me, I just knew what she was going to say – wait for it…-- “it’d look great on you! Here, you should try it on.” She tossed it into the growing pile of clothes in my arms.
“Brook, I think we— I – have enough to try on. I can’t hold much more.” I laughed as I quickly caught my balance and partially for her predictability.
“Fine,” she let out a huge sigh, “go try it on now… But come right out and finish ASAP!”
I chuckled, “Ok Brook, I will. Besides, you still need your outfit.”
As we walked down the street with bags full of new clothes Brook and I laughed and cracked jokes. Stopping at the red light we waited for it to turn green, we weren’t in a hurry, so it was fine. A moment later the light changed and we proceeded to walk across. Car horns beeps and I looked to the side confused. I was only able to get a glimpse of the speeding black car before feeling some rough pressure against my back pushing me to the sidewalk. An ear splitting screech emitted into the air followed by short silence and then panic.
I looked around for Brook, and stopped dead at the sight of her, her hair covered her face, and a pool of blood had already formed around her body. She didn’t move. I ran up and shook her, barely able to speak, “Brook… wake up…! Please, don’t die! You can’t die! Best friends forever… remember? It’s not forever yet!” I started to get hysterical as her body chilled. It was too late… she was gone… and it was all my fault. I stayed by Brook’s side until I was literally pulled away. I couldn’t leave her… she was my best friend.
When I finally returned home, weak and unwilling to do any thing, still not wanting to believe that she was gone, un wanting to eat I went to my room and logged onto AIM. Waiting for Brook to get on, just like when ever we did come back from shopping. This was all just some sick twisted joke; it had to be, HA! Good one Brook, you really got me this time!
But she never logged on, and with my stomach twisting and threatening to spill out on me I decided to write. I opened up word and started typing:

As I stand here and now I see all that was meant to be
And all I should have done
All my loves walk away one by one from me
My hopes, my dreams… all gone

I stared at it for a while wondering why I wrote that, it was so emo… Brook would have freaked, so I exited out of word with out saving and retreated to the shower. I looked down at my clothes, realizing that it was covered with blood… Brook’s blood. I quickly changed out of the blood stained clothes chucking them out and retreated to the shower. There I knew I would be alone, I stayed there for a long time. The water beat down on my back as I was lost in thought, at least until my mother pounded on the door telling me to get out or else.
