I've never really delved into the half-dragon templates at all, but I would surmise that half-dragons are usually a result of magical breeding.

hypnocrown Really? So Gnomes are actually... Well, I suppose I can picture that better cuz I've heard of little people having spouses that are average in height, you know? So I guess Elves mating with Dwarves is possible. However, Elves mating with dragons? Impossible! I left a theory of my avatar's origins at the "Dragons" thread. 3nodding The thought is just..........wrong, wrong, so very wrong.

So Mel, I suppose you didn't have time to read my theory at the "dragons" thread, did you? I asked if this would be feasible:
An average elf happens to find some potion with dragon blood in it and drinks it. After a while, a dragon's tail and horns grow and his skin is also changed. Voila! A half elf-half dragon is born! How about it Mel? I'll appreciate some comments on this from everyone, not just Mel. 3nodding

We're going into the world of Pinocchio a bit now aren't we? The scenes where he ends up turning into a donkey.
Who says another creature's blood has that effect anyway? If I drink something that contains the blood of another creature of let's say...a frog, I', not suddenly going to get green legs with a lot of webbing between my toes along with a very long tongue that shoots out to catch flies am I? Or the same for a cat. I'm not going to suddenly grow a long furry tail, long whiskers on my face and start saying "meow" in every other sentence.
The only way I can ever see something like that being feasible is if dragon's blood is not unlike a vampire's, and therefore having some kind of viral properties in it.
On the whole, it doesn't sit right with me at all.

On the whole, it doesn't sit right with me at all. I wasn't thinking of Pinoccio's world at all Mel. So, how would you see this happening anyway? I want my character to have a feasible origin but, I can't seem to think of one at the moment... neutral Ha-ha! nice one BerZ but, my avatar has no vampiric properties; at least, I don't think they would fit with him though... mrgreen

For some reason the idea of vampire dragons just has my brain screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I don't really know why, but the whole concept is just...... scream
I personally can't find a suitable way for your character's origin to be feasible, at least from birth anyway. If he/she was born a normal elf and was then subjected to experiments by some kind of wizard or alchemist, then perhaps some clarity could be siphoned from that?

No, I just find the whole idea....wrong. It just doesn't make a blind bit of sense to me. I need to think about what I mean and explain it in-depth.

Thanks for pointing that out! You don't mind if I use it, do you? Just so I know, where will you be trying to explain what you were trying to say about vampire dragons? At the dragons thread, or at the vampires thread?

Well I'm not likely to use the concept any time soon and it's probably been done before somewhere somehow, so nah, I don't mind. ^_^

Cool thanks! I may end up modifying it to make it my own though. mrgreen
I suppose I should really think it over and edit my post at the avatar thread when I'm good and ready. 3nodding

At the moment I'm developing a couple of dark elf characters in my world. I can't mention the race name (they're different to most other dark elf breeds I've heard of - definitely nothing like the Dunmer from Elder Scrolls or Drow from Forgotten Realms). Appearance wise they have grey skin and black hair.

Project topic revival...
I was talking to someone I know on MSN last night, and we got on to the subject of fantasy. It appears he is more into it than I first thought, but he prefers to talk about it over IMs rather than on a messageboard. I find it easier on a messageboard to be honest because the conversation flows too fast in real-time and you don't tend to stick to one topic.
We got on to elves. He asked me about what my writing involved, and that's how we got on to the topic of fantasy. The particular idea he has of elves is that they HAVE to be superior to humans in almost every way, otherwise they're not elves....just special pointy-eared humans in his terminology.
Personally, I think elves along with many other fantasy races and creatures have remained the same too long and have become stereotypical with no differing aspects whatsoever. He said if someone uses dwarves, he would rather them say "dwarf" and have everyone know exactly what he meant rather than having them explain that particular type of dwarf. I think there needs to be some diversity in fantasy nowadays. I didn't want to make elves more powerful in every way than humans in my world. They're still traditional to a point, but I've made some alterations to them to make them a bit more original for the genre than keeping strictly to how they first came about in modern fantasy - which is more or less through Tolkien's ideals.
I told him that frigates, brigs, barques and galleons are all types of ship, but at the end of the day they're still ships. I went further to say that there are many different races of humans, plants and animals....they're still humans, plants and animals at the end of the day, and he disagreed and continued to say that if an elf is not completely superior to a human it's not an elf.
What say you?
