I guess the main things that while the Crusades accomplished good, they were for the wrong reason.

No one, anywhere, deserves land that he doesn't have, be it a holy city, or whatever else you want.
Religion is not a proper reason for war, nor should it be used as one; there's no proof whatsoever either way.
Religion in itself, is just the predecessor to science and philosophy, in that it answers things that science and philosophy haven't yet. It really isn't necessary in the modern world, and the only redeeming quality is the moral and ethical values enforced by religion.
Too often throughout history, imaginary gods have been an excuse for killing, yet no one has ever learned. Sadly, until people can forget their religion, or at least keep it private, wars will occur for it.
A leader can all too easily say people should fight because such and such god said so. On the outset, thats a lie. A benevolent god could never sanction killing, nor would it want turmoil due to unproven messages. These gods seem more like the Greek gods, who interfered in human affairs selfishly, and for entertainment.
In conclusion, the Crusades were made for reasons unproven, violent, and therefore unethical, which contradicts both religions involved.

The only silver lining to the cloud was the exchange of ideas, and the transfer of Hellenistic ideas back to Europe. Although, considering an easier option, couldn't they have just traded, or made peace at least? We must lament the flaws of zealots who question not themselves.

What's offensive about it? They're far too long dead to be offended.

You're kidding me, right? The Muslims are one of the worlds MAJOR FRIGGIN RELIGIONS. You're just an ignorant American, aren't you?

Becuase every American is ignorant, right?

He's American btw. But He needs to STFU about it and preferably not post in threads that involves the potential to "offend" him.

Seriously Nas. That was extremely uncouth of you and I don't like you doing that.

The Catholic church itself in the Crusades was very barbarous of their treatment to the Muslims (hell I read they attacked Jerusalem and killed everyone inside of it, Man woman child, elderly, muslim, jew, and yes, even Catholics.) And it's been recorded that the Muslim rule of Jerusalem was extremely peacful and even tolerant. I'll be honest I think the Church was in the wrong. But at the same time Catholicism was all that people had back then, a time in Europe when people were illiterate, poor, and didn't leave their village for the whole of their lives , the hope of absolute salvation by killing heretics and infidels while seeing more of the world was certainly would seem appealing.

I"ll give Catholicism this much. When you're poor, it gets you through a hell of a lot. Especially in your parish. When faith is almost all that you have, then it can make you the most devout believer after all your suffering has begun to end and things start to turn up.

I, personally, just think that orginized religion isn't right for me totally. I don't like praying in groups. I don't believe that the Catholic God is any different than the Muslim God or anything. I've read too much on theology to think otherwise that the world's religions, from the begining of time, have you, don't have distinct similar traces.

That's why I pray by myself, with my Rosary, praying the way I was taught to pray because it feels very reeassuring.

Just a thought I suppose.

I agree about religion, organized religion is useless, and has shown itself to be in the past.
A single person has no need of a holy land, much less ownership of it.
Too frequently the organizations gain power, and try to sway views without evidence, so people don't even know why they think things, but they hold to them all the more zealously.
World religions are all very similar and based on the same idea, so people really shouldn't be identified by them, that should be a personal relationship between them and what they worship.

Ignorant American is unfair, ignorant person is closer. Never generalize, because it's almost never correct.

I was the same way when I was his age anyways.

Hmm... being the pessimistic old gal that I am, I have to make a snide remark about the actions of our present politicians. What's that old expression?... "History repeats itself." Maybe not an exact repeat, but disturbingly similar. Good intentions gone corrupt? Hmm.

I can't help but to whole-heartedly agree.
