With practiced ease and grace, Baki's body slid from the shadows of the low growing bushes. He landed harshly on the buck's back, his jaw clamping down on his prey's neck. Baki deftly avoided the buck's heavy antlers - at best, it would be a hindrance. At worst, the buck could potentially snag him somewhere vulnerable, like the underside of his belly or his legs. A snagged sinew would probably heal badly, since the medical woman didn't seem to be around the village very much. Low growls reverberating through his body, Baki waited for just the right moment to snap the buck's neck and drag him back to Maya. That would be enough meat for a few days, if not longer. Besides, he wanted to rest on the grounds for a while - and he was sure Maya was up to being antisocial as usual.

Too close!

Baki released the buck as it began to throw its head backwards. The sharp endings of his antlers were dangerous, and Baki was in no mood for fresh wounds. Snarling, he stayed close to the ground, angry that he'd let his prey get away. No matter - it was wounded, and Baki could follow the bloody trail until the animal died on its own from blood loss, or until Baki could get another good grip on the beast's neck. Shaking his mane out, Baki looked around for Kore - the cub was still in the general area, and though Baki could smell him, his focus was on the ten-point buck that was bleeding out all over the forest floor.

Baki didn't even bother to hide himself - he'd just have to follow this fresh trail until he found...aha! There was his prize, stumbling along like a drunken island-woman. Whatever happened to the crazy woman who lived on the shore...? Hmm...well, that was something to be pondered another time. With a snort, Baki loped towards the buck and rolled his shoulders, searching for a spot that he could grasp without risk of being jabbed with the buck's heavy rack. Under the throat would be good, only because Baki was almost as large as the buck as far as height. Its hooves would be close, but if he got a good grip it wouldn't matter - the buck was already weakening.

Damn - way too close! Baki lunged backwards as the buck lowered its head and rushed him, confused. The stupid thing ought to be dead by now! The crimson ran profusely from the animal's neck, though Baki could see it was starting to congeal. Oh great, all his hard work and the damn buck had auto-thickening blood. That was just peachy! With a low snarl, Baki shook his mane and prepared himself to attack again, but he realized that the buck hadn't stopped after its initial charge. It had kept running, and Baki had lost it! Funny, how a golden lion the size of a horse could lose a deer in a forest, especially a deer that was bleeding from the top of its neck. Maybe that was why - Baki hadn't cut into the jugular, so the buck actually had a chance to survive. Agitated, Baki lowered his nose and sniffed around.

Baki lifted his head, looking around. The ten-point buck was no where to be found, and that bothered the lion greatly. Where the hell could a giant bleeding chunk of dinner possibly run off to? He shook his massive head and sniffed at the air, the blood fresh (obviously) but splattered all over different trees and bushes. Where to start? Perhaps following the path that the buck had taken would help, so Baki turned and began a slow lope towards the bushes that it seemed like the buck had run through. He could, of course, smell the blood on the leaves, but was it any fresher than the blood on another bush some four feet away? Disgusted, Baki snorted and continued to try and track his dinner.

Looking around through the forest Karite was beginning to wish that Maya was close by. This forest gave him the creeps bad and it only seemed to be getting worse the deeper he got looking for firewood. The dripping sound of the moist moss and the constant odor of rotting...everything really was driving him slowly insane. Gripping tighter the Jo in his right hand and the one piece of wood in his left he began to worry that coming here was a bad idea. Steeping through the forest ever still he managed to find another good piece of wood. If he found them quicker maybe he could return to the grounds faster. "I've got a bad feeling about this." Karite said to himself. Thinking almost that the woods might actually reply.

Kore could smell a mixture of fragrances coming from the forest, one for sure was Baki. It was hard to confuse such a strong and demanding presence like his. The other was of blood and an animal the young cub was not familiar with. It wasn't of any human nor was it of another lion. Continuing deeper Kore became interested in what Baki had come up to that smelled this way. Moving his small body through the forest he was more then sure that this was the right way. Not knowing for sure what way was right it made no difference. Everything looked alike the only real clue the cub had was the nose on his snout. If it was wrong then he would be lost without any surefire way to get back to the village. Kore was sure though he had found Baki.

Suddenly Kore was drowned in a vicious smell of blood, the only thing his nose could focus on. It was stronger then before now overpowering Baki's familiar scent. If this was some sign that Baki was in trouble then Maya was more then likely close behind. Picking up his speed the young cub began to move towards the source, but then it enveloped him on all sounds. Surround by the smell of blood. Not knowing what to do the cub panicked and began to circle. His head shaking from side to side uncontrollably. Beginning to whine like any child would when separated from a loved one the cub felt insignificant at this moment. Cut off from the world drowning in the blood of what he thought was the only family he had. Kore's heart began to beat harder and his feet pattered in rapid succession in the same place. He was scared and unless the little cub could manage to retrieve the scent of Baki then he might be stuck here circling for a good time to come.

Kore was beginning to panic and cause his brain to over work his self till he caught the faintest hint of Baki in his nostrils. Not wasting a second of time the young lion cub decided he had to move and did. Gladly he did and it was the right path as he continued he noticed the scent got stronger and in his view came the blurred beautiful vision that was Baki his pack leader. The lion had been away for a long time it seemed but luckily the lion was in his few at last. He wanted to roar out to the lion but decided against it. Running harder then he had ever ran before the little lion did his best not to fall in damp floor of the forest. As he neared the lion he growled lowly to signal his entrance. He hoped the older lion would not be upset with him for being alone of leaving Karite. Kore was much to happy to see him again to stick with Karite.

Baki caught Kore's scent again, and eyed the cub not even a few feet away from him. Chuckling, Baki knew that Kore would find him shortly, and continued to sniff around for the buck. He wondered momentarily why this particular beast was giving him such a hard time, and he promptly came to the conclusion that no male liked to be beaten by another male. Perhaps Ruha, once grown, would be able to maul a buck and have no issues with it, but the great amount of testosterone probably had a hand in this buck's reluctance to just die and be Baki's dinner. Grumbling, Baki shoved his nose into a bush, hoping to find the trail that was the absolute freshest.

[Well...this sucks. LoL]

With a decisive snort, Baki plopped down on his haunches and growled audibly. This was not something he intended on spending all morning on! Maya still had to cut her own share of the meat and prepare it, otherwise he couldn't get his part of the kill...though if he ever caught this buck, Baki had half a mind to only bring back a flank and eat the rest of it himself, just to spite the stupid beast. At its last breath and still fighting...Baki hated that the deer was so stubborn, but could very much relate to the buck's resistance. Hadn't he, not so long ago, been in the same situation in the country that smelled of embers? Against the white-haired demoness, he'd been unwilling, unable to give up. With a harsh snarl, Baki lifted his nose. He wasn't hunting for fun - he was hunting for survival.

Seeing the large lion plop down on his rear Kore simply tilted his head to the side with an odd look. Kore had never seen Baki behave in such a way. While it was amusing it made the young hunter wonder if he could help. Of course knowing Baki would never ask for help from the cub because of the pride in being a leader it was still nice to think about. Walking closer Kore began to rub his head against Baki and looked into his golden eyes with that forever questioning look almost pleading to help Baki with his task. While he was a leader they were both Tategami. Together anything was possible.

Baki nipped at Kore's ears lightly, barely even touching the cub. With a slight nod to his head, because he knew what Kore wanted, Baki lifted his nose. The scent of the buck was still in his nose, and was probably on his muzzle and torso since he'd gotten a good grip on the beast before having to let go. Baki may have assumed the position of pride leader, but beyond simply expecting respect, Baki expected the pack to help in all aspects. He knew Kore had left the boy-wonder behind, but Baki had left Maya to 'take care' of the lynx he'd caught first. Shaking his fur and standing, Baki sniffed again, wondering just where the hell that buck had gotten to. He was starting to get hungrier...there! Baki let out a startled growl - the buck was less than ten feet away, its coat blending into the more filtered shadows of the forest. Agitated that it had been so close, Baki glanced down at Kore and grinned, letting the cub know that he was welcome to join him in bringing down the animal.

Without waiting for the cub (he was too hungry), Baki lunged after the buck. Repeating his initial attempt, Baki landed on the buck's back and swung his weight around so that he could clamp his jaws on the jugular. With a sharp snap, Baki felt the buck go limp, though he hung on for a while longer, just to be sure that his prey was down. Satisfied, Baki decided Maya wouldn't mind the blood stains, only because the antlers on the buck would provide her with much needed materials for other things that the human part of the clan needed. Breathing steadily, adrenaline pumping, Baki looked back at Kore and growled, a question to the cub.

Kore looked in shock at how easily Baki took down such a massive creature, but looking on Kore realized what that familiar smell was. he had tried hunting those creatures before but failed miserably due to the loud movements of Karite. While the boy was annoying on a hunt he was kind and fun to play with. Coming to from his dream state Kore noticed that Baki wanted more and Kore was just getting started. Dropping down on his belly low to the ground Kore acknowledge the question with a low growl, or the only sound a cub could make that sounded like a roar. Hunting was the only thing Kore really liked bedsides eating. That was always fun.

Listening to the quiet forest Karite couldn't help but to hear Baki hunting not to far off from him and freak. His heart rate skyrocketed and his adrenaline began corr sing with no signs of stopping any time soon. He was beginning to breath harder as well. it seemed the mighty reaper of time had find something that scared him more then Tanu and Misses Yuki. As he walked deeper Karite managed to trip over another piece of firewood that would suit his needs perfectly. Although now his body was covered in slime and his hair was once again full of earthy material he was working for Maya and hopefully she would know of some secret place with warm water where he could wash his body. Continuing to wash in the ocean at these temperatures would bring death earlier then it never needed to be brought. Standing now with three pieces of wood Karite decided to circle around and see if he could find Maya. He kind of wanted his bracelets back, that and to give her a nice status report on his time with the cubs.

[Rolls in next post, ignore. ]

Baki chuckled, and after dragging the buck back to Maya, lifted his muzzle one last time into the air and sniffed. This time, he tried to catch the scent of a doe. The female deer's meat was much tastier to human mouths, since it wasn't ridden with muscle-hardening testosterone. A doe would be better for Maya to eat, and since Kore was around, Baki assumed wonder-boy would be around shortly as well. The other boy would have to eat too, at least, Maya would want to repay him for caring for Kore. Snorting, Baki pricked his ears towards Kore. He could catch the scent, but he wanted Kore to work with him as well.
