Maiya stopped when the crunching noise stopped, breathing heavily from a very slight panic. She listened for a moment, and then peeked through the trees. Off to the left, toward the path that would take Maiya toward her house was a bear that would stand about 4 feet if it stood up on its hind legs. It was a sort of brownish-black color, but Maiya couldn't tell the species. Currently it was seated next to a berry bush, quietly sniffing at the food. Then the bear sat down with a loud crunch and began to eat the berries. Maiya retreated from the forest, and whispered to Schokolade, "It's eating right now, so it shouldn't move for a little while." She walked back along the beach purposefully. "If we head along here we can find a secondary path that will by-pass the bear and get us to my home."
(Wow...never imagined her to be the take-charge type. eek )

Schokolade cringed when he saw the bear. It wasn't very big, but it was still pretty frightening...a thing like that could eat him in...about twenty bites. He sighed. Possibly he was over-reacting? No matter. He followed Maiya again, spotting a path leading into the forest. It was paved, which was unusual, and flowers grew on either side. "I've never seen this path before..." He looked from the path to Maiya and back again. "Does it lead to your house?"

"Uh-huh," replied Maiya. She didn't take this path often, though it was certainly the prettier of the two routes. While she did like to stop and see the flowers, she also liked to go to semi-distant places before a certain time. "It takes a bit longer to get there, but eventually it does. I don't think a lot of namrah know about this path because it's so well hidden. Actually, Eyulf was the one who found it first, not me."

"Eyulf?" Schokolade asked offhandedly, follwing Maiya down the elegant path. He observed the flowers, bending down to smell them, only to get pollen in his nose and have to break for a sneezing fit. Upon recovering, he wiped his eyes with the tip of his tail.

"Eyulf is another namir who lives in the same area as me. We grew up together," Maiya explained. He was almost like a big brother to her, always looking out for her and keeping her entertained. She heard sneezing, and looked at Schokolade with concern. "Are you alright?"
(Thank you for replying. biggrin )

((No prob...I have the time and comp power, so why not?))
"Yes, yes I am fine." Delicately sneezes again and brushes his nose clean. "Just got some pollen in my nose..." Schokolade darted forward to stand beside Maiya. "Like...a brother or something, yes? I have a namir rather like a mother to me...we even came from the same home country. Deutschland..." He smiled and looked at the ground, thinking of snow and weinerschnitzel. "I miss Germany, but I think I would rather be here." He looked up at Maiya and smiled at her, his mind returning to the way the dying sunlight had reflected off her fur in a burst of golden reflections...
Yay.

"That's good that you're alright. Mothers are nice, whether they are biological or adopted." Maiya replied, almost off-handedly. She smiled back at him, thinking that he had a nice smile. It had a genuine feel to it. "So what was Germany like?" she asked, continuing to walk along the path.

Schokolade thought for a moment, following Maiya and trying to remember Germany. "There...were many mountains..." He shook his head. "I don;t really remember. I came here not too long after I was born. I wouldn't know anything about my homeland at all if I hadn't been cared for by Edelweiss." He quickened his pace to walk alongside Maiya.

"Oh, so Edelweiss is like a mother, right?" Maiya wasn't quite sure whether he said so or not. She would feel somewhat embarrassed if he had and she had missed or forgotten it, but better to be embarrassed than not ask. "Germany sounds really nice." She commented, thinking about possible mountain scenes that she could paint.

"Yes, she is." Schokolade agreed slightly distractedly. He cast about for a different subject to discuss. He noticed a colorful clump of flowers near the path, a slow-moving cloud shaped like a big totoro, and...he saw that the woods were almost pitch black. "Is your house far from here? Its getting rather dark..."

"Not too far," Maiya answered. The path was longer than her normal route, but not by a great deal. Only by a quarter of a mile or so. Or maybe it was only an 1/8...she wasn't too good at estimating distances. "I'm guessing we've got less than 10 minutes left to go."

"Thats good," answered Schokolade, glad not to have to admit that he was beginning to jump at shadows. "It'll be full dark by then, but at least we'll be close to a shelter of some sort...." He stopped himself, not wanting to appear like a fraidynamir in from of Maiya.

"Yeah, it will be pretty dark out by the time we get there," Maiya admitted, looking up toward the sky as the last traces of light were slowly fading. She pondered about what Schokolade would do once he brought her home. Should she let him go back to his own home? Would it be weird to let him stay at her place? The thoughts built up in her mind, causing a slight headache. Finally she decided to at least invite him. It wasn't too weird to let someone stay when it's too dark for them to get home, right? "Would you like to stay over until it gets light enough for you to get back to your own home?"
