Okay, apologies if I start sounding like a spokesperson.
I got my period when I was twelve. I remember I got it at night, and I was not impressed to have started, so I just ignored it until the next morning, when I couldn't anymore. xD Then I called my mother in and was like, "I started my period" and she was like, "Okay." And that was that!
I HATE PADS. HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE. They are the most uncomfortable things in the world. I wore them from like grade seven to grade nine, and they were awful. I was paranoid I would leak all the time [and one time I did, right through a pair of tan pants D:] and I was always conscious of it. During gym was freaking horrible.
Then one day I was desperate to get rid of them and tried a tampon, and they were sweet. For anyone's information, tampons do not hurt when they are inserted correctly. The number one reason it hurts is because girls tense up. Your v****a is a muscle, and when you tense up it makes it a lot harder to get anything in there. I used tampons for about four years, and they NEVER hurt me. Anyone can use them without pain; you've just got to be patient and well informed.
Last summer I discovered menstrual cups and moved onto the DivaCup. It was like a light from heaven shining down on me, lol. I'll sing its praises to anyone who wants to listen! My cramps became pretty much non-existant [and I used to have them pretty bad before] and I often forget I'm on my period. My next goal is to try out the Mooncup UK or the Lunette, because my cervix gets pretty low during my period and the DivaCup is a little too long.
For those who are inclined towards pads, I strongly suggest you try cloth pads. They're environmentally friendly and a thousand times more comfortable, not to mention better for your body. They stay in place better [cloth on cloth has better friction than plastic on cloth] and you've always got them on hand, so there's no danger of running out. Plus, it's cheaper, just like a menstrual cup!

- -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - I got it when I was 10. First out of all my friends... and basically all my school. I had boobs before most girls, and I tried to be tough and tomboyish or somewhat Daria-like. Those weren't very compatible with my "womanhood", lol. I had some of the biggest boobs in class until I was 13, when everyone else hit puberty. Now I'm one of the average ones. XD Anyway, back to periods. Mine went on swell the first year, but I started getting huge, horrible cramps ages 11 to 14, you know, the kind of cramps that make you vomit and stuff. They stopped after that, thank god. - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- -

Ho smokes. o-o;
@Chibi: Aha. XD; everyone has their own opinion. but somehow, the tampon makes me think of.. 'other' things. So I'm saving it until marriage. XDD; no children, though. o-o;
@Orikami: XD; I know what you mean. My friends are getting it somewhere in the year. I got mine at eight, when my bewbies started developing, and then. Well, no other girls have bewbs and I did. XD; now, my friends only have boobs. mmkay. and that means they're getting their periods next year. WOO! torture for 'em, 'cause I ain't helping. 8D
eww. o-o; cramps make you vomit? never thought of that. D; I mean, stomach aches and stuff, but cramps? o-o; I THOUGHT THEY WERE DIFFERENT. D:

tampons are actually mega comfortable if you do it right. xD it takes a few awkward tries, though.
for the most part, though, i use pads just because they're easier - the only time i put on tampons is when i want to go swimming or sports or something. :p
i got my period in like 5th grade. i was at home and i didn't really realize what was going on. then once i did, i started crying because i didn't want it. XD
i'm okay with it now, though. i still get bad cramps but my periods don't last very long. 4 days, usually.

The past few months, mine have been REALLY heavy. And my cramps have been bad, but I deal.
I felt so bad, I started my period on Saturday, and my mom was in Florida. My dad was here, visiting. [My parents are still together its just a military thing, long story]. But yeah, I was out of pads so I walk up to my dad and I'm like, "Hey, dad, can we stop by the drug-store later?" "Yeah, why?" "I need pads. =/" -Dad's face drops momentarily- "Oh-oh yeah. Sure honey, no problem."
I don't mind talking about my period, but I felt bad for my dad, he looked really embarrassed.
But later we get to the store and my dad goes, "Go get your girly things, they're over there, -points-, I'll be on the other side of the store." LOL. xD Poor dad.

@Asa -> I know. xD Hence the apology at the start. It's cause periods are such a rotten time for pretty much every girl, and we all deserve to be as comfortable as possible during what is pretty much a crap process. Things like cloth pads can make it a lot less painful [did you know that disposable pads can actually make your period longer?] and more... live-able.
@Pandah P O P -> Being a virgin, right? lol Tampons aren't even remotely sexual, believe me. Personally, I dislike them now, but I do condone them as being better than disposable pads. If you insist on using pads, you should seriously consider switching to cloth pads. Much better.

I got mine when I was 12. I had been bleeding before - very lightly - but I was like; 'Oh, it's nothing'. Until I realized it was my period, one month later! lol I've had extremely painful cramps once, the day before sports' day. I use pads - I refuse to use tampons! They're scary -and my "warning signs" are the countless zits popping up on my face one week before the period starts.

Totally knew that would get someone. lol Yes, I am. A good percentage of women found that when switching from disposable menstruation products to non-disposable ones [cloth pads, cups, sea sponges], it shortened their period by a couple of days. It's not guaranteed it would happen, but a lot of people seem to find that it does. One running theory is that there's some chemical in the disposable products that prolongs your period. Another theory is that since disposable products often aren't very comfortable, girls tend to 'hold back' [squinch legs together, clenching the v****a muscle, etc..] the blood for long periods of time, which results in a couple of extra days for the blood to leave.
