A lot of the things that the wolf said Karma didn't even recognize. A good furball? Furball wasn't a word that he was used to hearing so it took a moment for his brain to sort out it's meaning. He payed much more attention when the wolf got back to kalonas.

"Has there really?" A small bit of curiosity crept into his voice. "What do they look like? Alyna and I aren't sure."

"Well, I'm not gonna go find one just so's you two can look at 'em." Lyka raised an eyebrow at him. "I suppose I can tell ya a bit about them. They've got these sharp teeth, see, that can rip you to shreds, and they've got these eyes that just seem to bore into you...I don't much like their eyes. And they have wings, but theirs aren't purdy, like yours. Theirs are thick and leathery, like bats wings, and they've got these spikes on their wings that can cut you to ribbons. But worse of all is their hunger for blood...they want to hurt things, kill them. Even some of the half-breeds have that hunger. Don't ever trust a Kalona...not even a half-breed. 'Cause you can't be too careful." Lyka glared at Alyna. "And that's why I don't want'cha goin' off on yer own like that. You could get hurt, missy."

Alyna listened as Lyka explained, but she still wasn't very frightened of Kalona. She secretly thought it would be cool to have bat wings.

Don't trust a kalona...

Karma had never before in his life been told not to trust someone. The words of the wolf struck him as deeply strange. Couldn't there be such a thing as a kalona who didn't want to hurt anyone? His brow furrowed with thought as his mind went over the wolf's words. Sharp teeth and powerful eyes made a kalona...

He didn't like the thoughts that the description brought up.

"Maybe I... I have to get back to my parents." He not wanted to talk to them about kalonas. He had to find out more about these mythical monsters.

Alyna wasn't scared at first, but the more she thought about this "Kalona" stuff, the more afraid she became. She was reminded of the time her mother had taken her aside and explained about Kalonas. Everything that Alyna had just brushed off became real to her. It was the first time she had been terrified of something, and she quivered, and ran over to Lyka, nuzzling her for comfort.

Lyka, unaccustomed to such affection by the filly, coughed a bit, and nuzzled her back with her nose. "There, there, furball." she said comfortingly. "Do you now?" Lyka asked, turning to Karma. "I hope...I hope I wasn't too brash. I didn't mean to tell you something that would upset you. I just wanted to warn you." This was as close to an apology as he was going to get from Lyka. She wasn't the type to admit when she was wrong, but she was caring, and usually kind.

"It's all right," he said softly when really all he wanted was to go off and think about all that he had heard. Besides, it would be hard to talk to Alyna with the wolf around. That was too bad. He had been starting to enjoy her company before their conversation was disrupted.

"I've got to go now..." He gave Alyna a last look and a rare smile. "We can talk later, ok?"

Alyna nodded at Karma. "Sure...we'll talk the next time we see each other." Alyna walked over to Karma. "Well..I guess this is goodbye." She smiled back, a bit sadly, as she didn't know if she'd ever see him again. Alyna really liked Karma, even though he was very different from her. She wondered if Lyka would let her come this way again.

Lyka watched the two foals say their goodbyes. She saw that the two had become friends, but she knew that she wouldn't be able to let Alyna come this way again. At least not until she was grown up a bit. There were reports of vicious Kalonas in the area, and Lyka wasn't willing to sacrifice the filly's life just so she could see her friend. This made Lyka sad, and she sighed bitterly as she thought about keeping Alyna from this very interesting colt. Perhaps the two would meet again one day, after they had grown up enough to fend for themselves. Lyka consoled herself with this thought, and prepared to lead Alyna back home, where they both belonged.

Karma trotted down the path away from Alyna, his new friend. It was nice having a friend that wasn't just a sibling. It made it feel less enforced. He could choose to be friends with someone but he couldn't choose who was his brother or sister. He had a friend and she had a friend who was a wolf and afraid of monsters called kalonas.

Just like he had learned from his father that angenis were soquili that flew higher and faster than they could he would learn what a kalona was. He trusted his father's opinion more than a random wolf in the forest. It was something to think about, though. The meeting gave him plenty of that.

Soon he heard the sounds of his family ahead of him. For today, his adventure was over.
