A flick of his head and the hair was out of his face again. Thistle's expression faltered. "Why?" He took a long and lasting sigh. "Because there is an incorrigible kalona at home who just isn't the best of company. So I left.... and didn't have enough time in the day to get back there soon enough." The stallion did his best to fluff himself out to warm up a bit. "And really, I do not do well in the cold - not with winter and nighttime together."

Akteon dropped his nose and sniffed at the little flutter who only blew very quickly into the larger stallion's nostrils. The unicorn smiled, "And what is your name?"

The little one chuckled audibly, "What's yours? Names are power, you know. I don't give mine out too quickly."

Akteon didn't believe that, power was what you made of it. "I'm Akteon, and this here is my friend. But I will not put him at the disadvantage and give you his name."

"Well, Akteon, Nameless Orange Guy.... my name is Thistle." His teeth whistled a bit when he went over the 'st'. He also turned to the 'Nameless Orange Guy. "And wasn't it? I thought so. She took time out of her hunting in order to help me out...also, she didn't eat me when she possibly could have." Thistle turned his head to the side impishly, "You will not eat me, will you?"

"And my name is Paul Revere," the orange Soquili picked up the thread of conversation with a grateful nod to Akteon. He wondered if, perhaps, the cold could be held responsibile for some of Zahara's...quirks.

Though to hear that Thistle was here to escape a Kalona at home...it was a bit odd, but Paul didn't want to pry at this point.

He did sniff in disdain at the flutter's question. "Eat you?," the stallion laughed. "How disgusting. Only monsters like Kalona eat other Soquili!"

Perked ears caught the word 'eat', which only made the small female flutter more infuriated. If he thought he was going to have him a grand 'ol supper while shirking on his responsibilities, that orange goofball had another thing coming for him!

"THERE WILL BE NO EATING FOR YOU, PAUL REVERE." the tiny voice screeched as she buzzed her way into the clearing. She nearly lost her flying concentration, however, as she noticed the skulled stallion standing next to Paul.

Well crap.

Paul wasn't going to eat. Paul was going to get eaten by this... this THING. Darting her way in avoidance of the creature, she quickly landed atop of Paul's head, her small form glaring at the strange beast that stood before her, her attention having completely missed the bright purple short being standing beneath the two large giants.

"You will not be eating THIS giant tonight, you... you BONEHEAD." She huffed, then moved to tug at Paul's ear with her mouth. "C'mon Paul. You're going to go back and help, like you were SUPPOSED to."

Akteon was somewhat taken aback by the accusation and sudden appearance of another fairy-soquili. However, the situation was, well.... entertaining! First, she comes in and interupts their conversation; and then she called him 'Bonehead'; and thought he wasn't to eat Paul; and.... "So, Paul, is this the one trying to tie you down? Take away your freedom of the world and cage you in with parenthood?" His sides shook with barely repressed laughter.

Thistle watched, his bright eyes following the movement. What a silly little flutter. Could she not see that the one with a skull on his head was a unicorn? Granted... he does look formidable and possibly scary. He could hear a story brewing in the little mare's words, and he had to admit pulling on Paul's ear to get him away was kind of cute. Too bad his mind was on another paramour.

"Hmmm, Bonehead, I guess he DOES look like an orange.... I hear they are pretty good eating!" Thistle piped up as he smiled charmingly at the little flutter.

Akteon looked down at Thistle. The little guy had a point. "Now that you mention it, little Thistle.... he does possibly look good enough to eat."

It was not something to be seen every day; a big strong stallion wincing away from a tiny flutter. It was probably amusing, Paul Revere reasoned, that they were of similar coloration - which could be easily seen when she perched on his head, as she was doing now.

"No one's eating, Zahara!" he insisted, tilting his head first to one side and then the other, trying to get her off. "And come on...it's not my basket! It's parents are probably looking for it or something," he wheedled, trying to convince her, and sure he was failing miserably.

"Yeah," he told Akteon, "this is Zahara. Zahara, meet Akteon," he made the introductions, inclining his head upward to indicate the flutter atop him and then in the unicorn's direction. The stallion pointedly ignored the conversation concerning himself as food. He knew Akteon was kidding (or was at least reasonably sure of this) and didn't particularly care what Thistle thought.

Nonsense. It was all nonsense, this talk of cages, and oranges, and loss of freedom. Where in the world these stallions could come up with such chatter was beyond her.

Wait.

That's what it was. They were all stallions. No wonder none of them were quite as brilliant and knowledgeable as she!

Humphing out loud at the large orange giant's attempt to toss her off, the small flutter took leave of the short haired stallion and swooped down to land on the interesting purple winged creature. He seemed very similar to herself, yet quite larger in size. Why in the world he'd want to increase his size was beyond her reasoning... but then again, there was that whole 'stallion' thing again.

Without being granted permission, her yellow marked hooves landed upon the purple stallion's back, her eyes never leaving Bonehead, as she watched the larger being speak of devouring the only stallion that poor defenseless basket would have as a caretaker.

Well, it wasn't like she was big enough to fully care for it!

"Akteon the Bonehead." She humphed once again, green eyes narrowing. "Paul Revere is right. No one is eating Zahara. Zaharas are not for eating, but neither are Paul Reveres, no matter how much like giant oranges he may appear to be."

Turning to shoot her glare briefly at the large bright being, she huffed. "As for YOU. No, it is not your basket, but YOU goaded me into finding it. Theeeerefore, you have to help raise it, at least until it can move around and eat on its own. After that, who gives a unicorn's tail what happens to it?"

Akteon was, of course, just joking. He would no sooner eat Paul than he would any other soquili. In fact, he much rather liked plants and real fruits. And as this Zahara flew about, he followed her with his own gaze as some seriousness crept into his eyes. "Well, Miss.... I do take your word on that - I cannot even imagine how you might taste and truly hope that no one would deem to attempt it."

The unicorn stallion dropped his head to peer more closely to her - flutters were such interesting soquili, he had to admit. He smiled and tried not to look too frightening, "Maybe we got off to the wrong hoof, mmmm?"

Thistle was none-to-shocked to have the flutter on his back. She was very small, and he couldn't help but think how his own mother liked the 'tiny' size. What he wasn't fond of was essentially not being able to turn around and see her. He didn't like anything on his back, so close to those fragile wings, and even though she would most likely understand that, the idea was daunting.

He tried not to think about it, and when Akteon brought down that skulled head of his, Thistle unconsciously took a step back but continued to keep his mouth shut for the moment. Who was he to discuss baskets and raising babies?

"I didn't!" Paul Revere stammered indignantly. "You're the one who insisted on looking for a flower in the middle of winter! It's not my fault it happened to be attached to a basket!" No. No WAY was she blaming this on him! It was completely and utterly her fault!

But after Zahara flew over to land on Thistle, with her attention on Akteon, the big orange stallion started edging away, hoping to escape yet again.

She gritted her teeth, growing fussier by the second.

"But YOU told me there were no flowers during the snowy time. I proved you wrong about that, and so now YOU are making excuses for yourself! I found the flower, and now we're both going to take responsibilities for finding the basket!"

Needing to calm down, she swiftly turned her head around and faced the Bonehead Giant again, ignoring the poor flutter she was standing upon who seemed irritated she was there to begin with.

"Perhaps we did. Or perhaps YOU are just pretending, and truly have intentions of eating poor Paul and poor Zahara for dinner!"

PostPosted: Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:03 pm

Akteon was slightly taken aback. It seemed there was no reasoning with the little flutter. She simply had to be set in her mindset. He actually regretted making that first impression, never mind she was the one to start thinking he ate soquili. Or maybe. "Miss Zahara, is it the skull helm that has you set in such an opinion? Should I take it off just so you believe that I am a soquili, just like any other? And have no intention on eating your or your....." he looked up and gave Paul a somewhat pathetic look as the orange stallion attempted his get-away. "....uh...." he couldn't think of a word to describe Paul's relationship with the flutter mare without making things more complicated.

Thistle shifted from hoof to hoof. Couldn't the other two see that they were just making her more agitated? If she got really angry, she might take it out on him, and start tugging on his wings! They were disagreeable enough as it was in the winter. His voice was soft as he asked the mare, even though he couldn't turn around to look at her directly. "So, wait, does Paul have any ties to the basket? Why is it his responsibility again?" He must have completely missed something...

Thistle had a lock of hair in front of his eyes again, but he dare not motion to get it out of the way.

The orange Soquili in question gave a grateful nod to Akteon as he continued backing away. He was almost two horse-lenghts away now, almost in the clear-

Paul Revere stiffened, hearing his name. Of course it would be Thistle that would not pick up on any subtle hints! Throwing caution to the wind, the orange stallion whirled and ran off into the forest, though his ultimate goal, this time, was the wide open grasslands where there would hopefully not be any Tainted places such as he and the unicorn had found earlier.

With one giant leap, the tiny flutter bounded from the back of the small purple flutter and towards the scary face of the Bonehead Soquili.

"You'll be keeping that head on, if you knew what was good for you!" She chided, landing atop of the tip of his head, as if to ensure the removal was prevented. "I dont want to see any ugly face hiding beneath it. Goodness knows, if that's just the mask, who KNOWS what's lurking underneath!"

Turning from where she stood, she smiled down at last towards the purple flutter and nodded her head curtly. "He found it, so he must help raise it. It would make a stallion as cruel as a kalona if he just abandoned it to the cold harsh climate of winter. Thus, he's to raise the foal up until it's old enough to wander on it's ow--HEY WAIT A MINUTE, WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!?"

Her head had jerked swiftly to the right as a bright orange blur began speeding away. How dare he take off on her AGAIN?!?

With a screech, the flutter jumped from the hard bone surface and took off after the fleeing stallion, screaming obscenities at him every yard of the way.

Akteon whickered in humor at the flutter's antics, trying to distract the little mare from Paul's escape plan. "Well, I guess since you do not want to see, I shall keep my helm on..... and for your information, miss, I am QUITE handsome under here." The stallion did his best to wink up at her even though it was difficult with her on his head.

Thistle was intrigued by the information. It would definately make a good story! He might have to learn more to make it a full epic tale. The little stallion didn't even bother to dignify the look from Paul with a response. Really, he was just relieved to have the mare off his head.

He did notice, however, how fast she zoomed off. Not to mention her use of language as she flew after poor orange Paul. Thistle did not for a minute envy the larger stallion his position in this tale. Sure, it was a good story, but he was more than happy to not have a bigger part in it.

Akteon turned and watched as the screeching mare went after his new friend. He couldn't help but wince. For an instant, he debated going after them, maybe help Paul to get away...he knew some tricks that might help. But that small flutter seemed smart, they might not work. The large stallion chuckled and shook his head as he remembered what she said about his helm.

At Thistle's glance, the unicorn looked down again. "So, should we get you out of the cold?"

Thistle couldn't hide the look of relief and hope. Would he ever!
