heart

It had been months since Aponi and Malachite's first playdate. They'd seen each other from time to time at the shop and the mansion, but they -- or, at least, Malachite -- had been too busy to organize any other get-togethers.

Malachite was beginning to get sick of school. He still liked a couple of his teachers, but the work was tedious and the students left him alone. This was partly because of his outrageous outfit, and partly because he was beginning to get an aggressive attitude towards those who scoffed at how he dressed. He hadn't met any other boys who dressed like him, and he didn't interact with students from other classes. He should've felt lonely, but he chose to separate himself from them.

The bell for the end of the school day rang. Though he usually hung back and waited for the wave of students in the hall to dissipate, he pushed his way into the crowd, head held high as he walked to his locker.

In his ususal routine, Aponi made his way through the crowd of students, the bell echoing through the halls for a final time. By then, he was already digging through his locker, stuffing the necessary things into his little green schoolbag and quickly shutting the metal door. He tightened the straps of his bag, he had enough in it to pull him straight onto his bum.

Pulling the bag up a bit, he began searching through the jumble of students, getting bumped and pushed as he stumbled in his shoes toward the exit. No matter how hard he tried to get though the groups and cliques, hands and elbows and sometimes chests continued to push and prod and toss him around without any regaurd. Aponi cowered, as his personality had learned to do, and leaned against the wall, waiting for the hall to empty.

He wasn't scared, he was simply being causious since, well, the 'encounter' the Friday before. He pressed his chin into his big, fluffy boa, gaining comfort.

Malachite finished putting his books into his bag and slung it over his shoulder, letting the locker door slam shut. He sighed under his breath as he joined the throng of students heading for the main entrance/exit. There was a back door, another way he could've left, but he didn't have the patience to fight upstream.

He experienced some jostling as he made his way down the hall. A look from his piercing blue eyes usually made people think twice about doing it on purpose.

He would've kept on going -- but his eye caught a glimpse of red feathers and white hair, and he waded over to the otherside of the hall. No, his eyes hadn't been playing tricks on him; it really was Aponi.

"Aponi~" he said cheerily, giving the boy a wave though he was standing in front of him.

The pale-haired teen looked up, surprised that someone actually knew his name, and even more surprised to see malachite standing in front of him. His mouth curled into a familiar little smile, and his cheeks lit up with color. "Mal." He chirped, comming closer to his good freind, so tempted to give him a big squeeze, but the feeling of dozens of eyes upon him made him hold back his physical joy.

"Don't tell me you go to this school." he said, smiling brightly, "I've never seen you in the halls before." He felt so relieved, but at the same time, the fear of introducing Mal to his 'favorite' bully was near unbearable. He shook the fear from his mind, besids, Mal was here! Things were already so much better!

"I don't usually hang out in the halls," Mal said, grinning. "I avoid them as much as possible. I wish I'd known you were here, though. The school year would've been much more interesting."

He shifted the backpack on his shoulder and stood closer to the wall. "Are you headed home?" he asked.

Aponi felt the same, if he had known Mal was here, he'd of had a lot more fun at school. Hell, he'd probably even try to avoid sickdays if he knew his closest freind went to school with him. "I'm here a lot." He mumbled, it was true, he was often settled against the row of lockers closest to his to eat his lunch or hidden away in the library.

"Mm-Hmm." Aponi nodded, he looked up at one of the circular clocks that decorated the halls like lanterns at a festival, he was usually on his way home by now. He leaned away from the wall, motioning towards the exit. "You wanna walk with me?"

"I see," Mal said, giving Aponi a once over. "Sure, I'd be glad to walk with someone, for once."

The crowd had died down and he headed for the door, making sure Aponi wasn't far behind him. "You know, I noticed the other day that you weren't looking so good," he said, making his way down the stone steps. "I didn't want to mention it in front of everyone else. Have you been doing okay?"

Aponi cheerfully made his way beside Mal, looking brighter than he had in days. He was considering calling this a good day up until Mal mentioned how he was feeling. Aponi's cheeks burned, not out of anger, but out of embarassment.

"I'm fine." He half-lied, sure he was feeling pretty good with Mal here, but the past week had been hell. From the blossoming of his bodily confusion to the harassment from schoolmates, he was crumbling inside, like a pile of sand under a wave.

"I've just been a little sick lately, thats all."

Malachite eyed Aponi as they reached the sidewalk. "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that," he said, turning his attention elsewhere. He didn't believe the boy, but he wasn't about to say anything. "I guess a lot of people have been sick, lately. School is such a germy place. Ugh." He made a face and shook himself a little.

"Yeah..." Aponi looked down at his feet, as he had become accustomed to doing since his first day at school, he felt Malachite look him over and his face seemed to warm up. Now he was lying to Malachite, who could he trust with his problems now?

Just as he was about to make a comment about the truthfully germy school, what with so many grubby, unwashed hands touching everything all the time, he looked up to survey the sidewalk in front of him, and there at the end of the walk was a familiar, yet frightening face for Aponi. The boy looked back at him and smiled, not a reassuring, friendly smile, a mocking smile, more like a grimace.

"Holy s**t, there's two of 'em!" The thick necked brute chuckled, his arms crossed over his unusually broad chest, he surveyed Malachite and Aponi equally, his eyes squinted.

Aponi felt faint. Maybe, since there were two of them, he wouldn't do anything...at least that's what Aponi was hoping for. "Oh jeez..." Aponi mumbled.

Mal heard Aponi start to say something, and then noticed that the boy had stopped walking. He glanced at him quickly, then looked to the end of the sidewalk. He frowned and quirked an eyebrow at the boy, unimpressed with the way he carried himself.

He spared another glance at Aponi as he muttered. Aponi didn't look well at all. "Someone you know?" Mal asked, his voice dropping to the same emotionless tone he'd used just the week before.

Aponi bit his lip, smearing his black lipstick, he shook himself out of his fear to pull at Malachite gently. He shook his head, "I don't know him..."

"We should...um, walk on the other side of the street." He said, utterly serious in his attempts to lure Mal off the sidewalk. The bully pushed himself forcefully from the building he had been leaning against to make his way towards the two.

"Where you going, f**, you and your boyfreind going shopping?" He sneered, thinking himself mighty clever.

Malachite's frown deepened as Aponi tugged at him. "I suppose, if you insist," he said, keeping his voice neutral. He glanced at the street; there was too much traffic to cross just yet.

The brute was bold if anything, he continued to get closer to the two, laughing at his own jokes as he went along with his simple-minded harassing. "You guys gonna hold hands while you cross the stree? How cute." He sneered, spittle gathering on the lips of his pudgy face.

"And I thought you were a total f**." He said, sneering at Aponi, "But check out your freind, he looks like my sister."

Aponi pulled at Mal a bitmore forcefully, the traffic hadn't cleared yet, but he was becomming desperate. As the cars kept him at bay, the thick-headed assailant did the same.

Malachite twitched at the word "f**," but turned his head to look at the boy cooly, letting Aponi tug at him. "Too bad she got all the good looks and you were left looking like a shaved bull dog," he sniped.

Yeah, he still wasn't so good at comebacks, but he was working on it.
