"Which, again, I culd have told you if I'd realized that you were ignorant of the nature of cold water. But ah well; what does not kill us can only make us stronger, and cold water and swimming both have natural health benefits." Or so Zaphiro had always believed, but with his natural state of good health and physical fitness, he saw no arguement against his suppositions and therefore stood by them.
But much as he loved his morning swim, he knew it was something that he and Hienna would never view in the same light. She'd made quite clear, on numerous occassions, that she found the whole practice little more than a barbarian and antiquitated custom. Really, that made her peace offering this morning all the much more charming; he would have been content with just the return to their normal non-formal conversation style.
That didn't mean he was going to argue, though. Picking up an apple himself, Zaphiro crunched through it with gusto, enjoying the tart crispness. "This was a very sweet idea, Love."

"Literally, I'd say," Hienna said teasingly as she bit into her apple, the delicate crunch music to her ears as the sweet juice burst upon her tongue. She said nothing more about the water, as truly complaining, even in jest, would likely do something the spoil the entire peace offering she'd so thought out. She'd missed the easiness, and it was wonderful to have it back.
"I took a walk last night," she said off handedly, "And visited Hannah and Zaire. I figured that if we could make it through that, we could make it through anything, and they inspired me." There was a small smile to her lips as she lifted her head to look at her mate. "I...was thinking of perhaps expanding our family. Sometime. Maybe...?"
It was less sudden than the seemingly random question appeared to be, considering her mate's earlier comment about raspberries were still dancing through her skull.
"If you'd like to."

Though Zaphiro would never be so low as to compare personal sorrows, he still hadn't reached the point Hienna had when it came to speaking of their two stillborn daughters. At the mention of their names, his lightheartedness wavered slightly and he found himself looking off towards the woods and the location of the two tiny graves. Hearing that Hienna had been to see them without him was an eye-opener, a realization that their emotional split had gone a lot deeper than it had first appeared.
However, he did his best to brush such anxieties off; after all, they had managed to mend that fence and were once again here together, talking and smiling, sharing their affections as well as their sorrows. Zaphiro had a tendency to dwell on those sorrows, but he'd always done his best to put on a brave face for Hienna and the kids. He didn't doubt that Hie could see right through him, but at least it salved his conscience at least a tiny bit.
It was with his usual dismissal of the negative that he managed a smile at his mate, drawing one of her braids to his lips with a wing for a light kiss. "Hienna, I love our children more than my own life. To ask me if I'd like more is moot and depends entirely on you and your own inclinations. After all, it is your lot to bear them, mine to merely worry."

Hienna still had her off days, thinking of their two daughters. The mare still blamed herself, even though it wasn't logical to do so, but she did. It was rare that she mentioned them, mostly because she did know exactly what Zaphiro thought of the subject, and how it saddened him. With as long as they had been together, it wasn't, in the least bit, hard to know how her mate ticked.
"I would like more," she said as he kissed her braid, eyes slipping shut with a slight contented smile upon her face, "You take good care of me, when I am, so it's not so much a burden on me as it may be for others. I enjoy feeling their life, and watching you worry is half the fun."
With one daughter mated, and two sons who barely came home as of late, the mare certainly did feel some kind of empty nest syndrome. She certainly could enjoy more foals running about her feet, if given the chance. Even if the worries from the first try and loss had never quite gone away.

"Well, I'm sure that if the gods are willing, we will have more children to call our own. With luck, we might even have grandchildren to keep them company, if all goes well with Gemma and Leon." Smiling, Zaphiro drew Hienna back against him, holding her close and nuzzling at her throat. She smelled wonderful, his mate; like a fresh dewy lawn dotted with clovers. She was so wonderful, his Hienna...
What didn't kill one was supposed to make them stronger. In their case, Zaphiro felt that such philosiphies were moot; there was no way that what he felt for Hienna could possibly get to be stronger than it already was.
They had had their hardships, yes, but so did all couples. He couldn't hold Hienna's silence against her, not when she'd had their daughter's best interests at heart. Even if they'd been horribly, horridly wrong in their assumptions, they hadn't been acting with malicious intent and he could forgive them.
Running his nose down along her neck, Zaphiro murmured softly, "I only hope that Gemma is at least half as happy in her choice of life partner as her father is in his. If they reach even that degree of happiness, then I'll know my little girl has made the right choice."
