"Forgive me. I'm recently dead and thought I'd try to lighten the mood a bit," Gatz said dryly. The former Hokage sighed and nodded in understanding. "So, why were you called 'the Flying Thunder God', anyways? I heard that it was because of some technique you knew, but I think that it died out with you..." The Fourth Hokage popped some kinks in his neck, limbering up, and took out a kunai with a strange looking rite written on it.
"Watch," he said, handing it to Gatz. The young ninja stared at the odd kunai for a bit as the older one walked off for a distance. The Fourth Hokage then waved and called to get Gatz's attention. "Ready?"

"Yeah!" Gatz called back, waving.
"Now don't blink, or you might miss it!" the man called back tauntingly. Gatz watched carefully, though he still almost missed it. True to his namesake, the 'Flying Thunder God' disappeared in a flash of yellow chakra and then reappear right in front of Gatz. The Fourth Hokage plucked the kunai back from the stunned junior ninja.
"Whoa..." Gatz said, staring in open mouth amazement. "... Do you think you could teach me that?"

The Hokage laughed and pointed out the obvious.
"In case you haven't noticed, we're dead at the moment! What would you want to know a trick like that for?"
"We're dead. Can you think of anything better to do to kill time, or is there some great afterlife poker-game I'm keeping you from?" Gatz said, pointing out something equally obvious. The Fourth Hokage slumped over in defeat.
"Well, it has been rather dull around here lately..." he admitted. He stood back up, grinned, and gave Gatz a hearty slap on the back. Apparently he was endearing himself to this new distraction from eternity. "Right then! It's been awhile since I've tried to teach anyone something, so don't blame me if I'm a little rusty!"

The Hokage did a series of hand seals in the air and thrust them out, leaving symbol hanging there for the moment.
"First thing you have to learn about the 'Flying Thunder God' technique is this little baby---the 'Capital Punishment Seal'. This is a seal that lets you home in on the person or the object you apply it to while using the main technique, so it's vitally important that you learn it."
"Umm..." Gatz said, starting to point out that the seal currently wasn't attached to anything. The former Hokage waved dismissively at the incoming question.
"I know, I know, but this isn't reality as you know it. The rules are a lot more flexible here. I've just got it like this so that it's easier for you to see."
"Oh," the student responded.

"Now then, let's see those Hand Seals," the Fourth Hokage prompted. Gatz did a once through of the appropriate seals, and his teacher corrected and errors he made, then had Gatz repeat them. And so it went on for a long while, until both parties were sure that Gatz had gotten the seals down cold.
"I think I've got it now," Gatz said, placing the seal on his hat experimentally. He was amazed at the little 'blip' that showed up on the 'radar' of his awareness when he did. "Oh, wow!" he said, taking off his hat to look at his work.

"Good work," the 'Flying Thunder God' told Gatz, nodding his approval. "Now, how about you throw it some distance and try moving yourself to it." Gatz was a bit reluctant to try.
"But I like my hat..." he said, not wanting to part with it. He didn't really have that much to himself in this strange place, after all. The Hokage sighed and explained to Gatz as he would a child.
"This is the afterlife, remember? It's not as much your actual hat as an extension of yourself that looks like it. Besides, with the Capital Punishment Seal on it, you should be able to find it again right away no matter where it ends up. Now toss it out a bit and try the technique!"

Gatz did as his teacher asked and threw his hat a little ways away from himself. Whither it was because of Gatz's wishes or the fact this place seemed to be at least partly grounded in reality, his hat spun to a stop on the ground where he had thrown it, and didn't slip off into some other dimension or something equally unpleasant.
"Now focus on going to the seal..." his instructor prompted. Gatz started to focus on the seal. In fact, he focused really, really hard. He tried pushing himself along his focus towards the seal on the hat, but still, nothing happened.

"Umm... try focusing a little less," the Fourth Hokage prompted, seeing his struggling student. "It's more of a gentle flowing or hop then it is an uphill run or a giant leap." Gatz mentally scorned himself the way a normal person does when they find out that the doors they've been pushing on are marked 'pull', and revised his efforts. This time he didn't seek to project himself to the target as much as simply be there the next moment, without having to traverse the space between. There was a flash of yellow chakra, and suddenly Gatz was standing next to his hat---which he immediately picked up and placed back on his head.
"Seems easy enough now," he said. "Anything else I should know about the technique?"

"Yep. Nice to see you caught that," the young ninja's instructor said, pulling out one of the specially marked kunai. "See the handle? It has the rite for the Capital Punishment Seal written on it. They're pretty handy. Here, I'll show you how to write it..."
Gatz and his teacher spent the next hour going over how to correctly prepare the kunai with the rite.
"... And that should do it!"
"Thanks, I've learned a lot," Gatz said.
"No problem," the Fourth Hokage said, stretching. "Man, this is the most activity I've had in a long time! I'm going to go take a break. See you later!" So Gatz and the Forth Hokage parted ways for the moment...

Gatz walked through the afterlife some more, looking for someone to train with some more, when he happened upon and elderly man in a wide hat. He remembered this old man from his childhood; it was the Third Hokage of Hiding-it-Leaf.
"Oh, Lord Hokage! How are you?" he asked, greeting the grandfatherly old man.
The Hokage tapped out the end of the pipe he had been smoking onto the ground.
"As well as can be suspected, I suppose. However, it is a bit distressing to see one so young walking the afterlife..." he mentioned. Gatz sighed at sat down next to him.
"Couldn't be helped," he said with a shrug. "Some guy who was a lot stronger than I was decided he didn't like me that much. You know how it can be. But hey, I've moved on." Gatz looked over at the old man. "I'm training from all the great masters here in the afterlife to pass the time. Are there any bits of wisdom you wish to depart on a willing student?" The Third Hokage looked thoughtful and stroked his chin.
"Hmm... I might, I might. That all depends upon what you are looking to learn, however..."

"Well..." Gatz said as he leaned back and thought for a moment, "... I've got to admit that my current skill level isn't that high, so how about we start off with something simple..."
"Alright then, let's start you off on the Shuriken Shadow Clone technique, then," the Hokage said, hoping up from his seat. "You do know Kage Bunshin no Jutsu, correct?" he queried.
"Eh-he-he-heh... no," Gatz answered in reply, mildly embarrassed. "As I said, my skill level is pretty low at the moment." The Hokage sighed and rolled his eyes.

"Well, I suppose that you can still learn the principle of the technique, at least, even if you won't be able perform the genuine article just yet," the Third Hokage consented. "Who knows? One of these days you may find someone to teach you the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu you need to complete the technique. It is a big afterlife, after all." Gatz nodded, agreeing with the old man's statement. At the moment, he didn't have any reason to believe he'd be going anywhere quickly.
"So, where do we begin?"

"Well now," Gatz's instructor went, turning to a tree and pulling a shuriken from the folds of his robes. "First to take a shuriken, and then---" The Hokage deftly flicked the projectile at the tree. As Gatz watched, the single throwing star split into several dozen, all of which then proceeded to thunk solidly into the tree trunk. After a moment, the shadow copies of the shuriken dissolved in little puffs of smoke, leaving only the one 'real' shuriken imbedded in the wood---along with thirty-odd gouge marks from the others.
"... That seems handy..." Gatz commented.

"Yes," the Hokage said, gesturing for Gatz to go retrieve the throwing star for his own use. "Now you try it, using the basic Bunshin no Jutsu---as opposed to Kage Bunshin no Jutsu, which you don't know yet."
Gatz walked over and pulled the throwing star out of the tree. After picking out another tree as his target, he wound up his throw and released. The he quickly concentrated on making shadowy copies of the shuriken as it sped towards its target. Both instructor and student stared as something only vaguely shuriken-like with a smiley face on it wobbled next to the real one. The poor ninjutsu illusion wobbled along for a bit longer before it hit the tree and disappeared. Gatz went to go get the throwing star, a bit embarrassed.
