"Maybe Chris'll grow up to be an artist," suggested Wisp, swallowing delicately before she spoke (that was politeness!). "He can go around and... smoosh light poles into shapes. They'd be so prettier if they were trees and birds and stuff. Right now, they look boring."

"I think it'd be better if we provided the metal," Tyler said easily. "The city doesn't much like that sort of thing."
Chris stayed silent, eating his huge plate of fish and greens as he sighed inwardly. "Maybe find place with no doors," he decided. "Will be good when I big!"

It was Wisp who caught the meaning in this: she scrunched up her face and looked at Missy and Tyler worriedly. "How much bigger do you think he's going to get?" she asked. "I mean, he's already really big and, um, if he got double how big he is... I'm not too great at maths... then when he's a teenager he'll be, like, as big as a barn!"

Tyler and Missy looked at each other.
"I gonna get big," Chris said, certain of this for some strange reason. "I dunno why, but I is. I gonna be twice as big as Daddy, probly, at least." He played with his food for a while then finished it off.
"We can't know that for sure, Chris," Missy said. "It's something we'll find out with time."

"You could ask Uncle Jack for help," said Jacoba, who was busying herself with her dinner. She ate a little bit like a guy: Wisp was more delicate. "He can extend rooms and make things bigger with magic. That's because he's a reprobate." (That was what M.B. said, anyway.)

"I doubt that's what she said," Missy said as Tyler looked away quite pointedly. "But I'm not sure, that sounds like magic, and well, we're not that... um... used to magic," she said after a moment.
"Chris and I will build a place," Tyler said. "Or fix the house. It shouldn't be too much work by the time he's that size."
Chris, though, was distracted, having finished his plate. He was now singing softly to himself, waiting patiently for the others to finish.
