Edward John nearly pitched forward out of his chair. "Yes!" he agreed, and then again: "Yes! That's perfectly convenient! What time exactly?"
Merroth suddenly got a sinking feeling. Edward John's enthusiasm was an unfamiliar variable-- and not in the good, mathematical sense.

"Three-thirty," she said, "after school." She addressed Merroth this time: "I'll give you sufficient work that you won't be bored when you're not with me. I expect it done, though, for our sessions."

Then Merroth figured out what was wrong here. They were done for today. His little mouth opened in shock and he screamed in fury at both Edward John and Beatrix, "NO!" He pounded his fist on the table. "NOW." They couldn't end it, not like this. Not when there were still NEW NUMBERS. No, no, NO!
But Edward John grabbed Merroth before he could do more than scream and bang his fist and lifted him into the air, quite effectively containing Merroth's anger, at least where Beatrix was concerned. Edward John got a shoe in the gut for his trouble. It was a tantrum, pure and simple, and not a terribly effective one at that, even when Merroth started crying, redfaced, blubbering for sympathy from Beatrix to keep the lesson going just five minutes longer.

"I'll see you on Tuesday, Merroth," said Beatrix, wholly unsympathetically. "Thank you for bringing him in. "
