'Fantastic'? That's not the word Mouse would have used to describe overpriced street-nachos. Sure, they were delicious, but not exactly worth having an epiphany over, and the fact that they were being sold in Durem made them no more or less tasty than the ones that could be found anywhere else. Just standard nachos.

It was almost as if... well, really, the thought wasn't too surprising at all...

While making quick work of her own greasy plate, she nonchalantly asked, "You've never had nachos before, have you?"

Caught. He blinked at the question, panicking slightly. Should he attempt to deceive her in order to maintain his dignity, or be honest with this young woman? Honest won out, dignity was nothing next to the truth.

"You are correct Miss, they are new to me. And I will admit, not anything like I was expecting." He reached for another nacho, taking a mound stuck together with gooey cheese and carefully navigating the molten treasure into his mouth.

"A culinary masterpiece, it is amazing I have not discovered these before!"

Bauta really seemed to be enjoying those nachos. It was... well, to be perfectly honest, it was kind of cute to see how much of a novelty they were to the harpy. Just a few minutes ago he was a posh and proper chivalrous gentleman; handing him some junk food was turning him into a big kid in a cravat.

"But it looks like they're sitting right here every day. I don't see how anyone could just overlook them," Mouse mused. The sheer tackiness of fast food stalls made them a beacon of unhealthy against all of the other ones in the market. Maybe they were such an eyesore that some people here chose to act as if they didn't exist at all.

Well, at least that took care of her need for food for a while. As the short girl waited for Bauta to finish his, she looked around her for a vendor she might be interested in buying something from.

"I suppose it never occured to me." he mused, finishing up the glorious cheese and slipping his white gloves back on. "I will have to give these more consideration, I thank you for introducing such things to me."

He smiled down at her, offering the young woman his arm again. Such kindness deserved kindness in return.

"Are you ready to continue our exploration of the market, Miss? I would like to show my appreciation for you. I am not sure what may interested you, would it be too presumptious to ask what kinds of things you enjoy?"

Mouse blinked a couple of times as she processed what the harpy was saying and asking. Did he just offer to buy her a gift? She couldn't think of any other way to take that remark, but a small part of her was still surprised that the man was this appreciative of a plate of nachos.

"What do I like? Hmmm..." This took a little more thought than it should have, since she had a feeling she wasn't supposed to answer with 'muscle cars' or 'giant robots'. "I like... machines. And animals," she ended up saying. 'Chocolate' was another one, but the girl hoped Bauta knew that was a given.

"Hmmm..." he mulled the thought over in his mind. Machines? Now that was an odd thing for a young woman to like. Animals he maybe could have guessed, but he would have expected an answer like flowers or jewelry. What kind of woman would prefer machines to that?

Bauta looked down at the green haired human by his side and smiled. Well, now that answered his question. Machines...not a usual thing to find in a market focused on foods and small crafts...but perhaps his brother was about. The elder harpy sometimes set up a small table amid the venders on nice days to display his ware. Now that would be a perfect idea.

"If you would follow me, Miss?"

The girl would probably have grown up more fond of flowers and jewelry if it weren't for how several varieties of the former made her sneeze and just about every kind of the latter tended to get caught in things, and sometimes in ways that threatened death or permanent damage. Not to mention that machines have a great deal more practical use than flowers and jewelry, which usually just sit or hang around looking pretty until they wilt or get caught in something.

With a short nod she followed the harpy wherever in the market he happened to be leading her. She didn't know what to expect, but hoped the man wouldn't overdo repaying her tiny act of kindness.

"Wait here one moment, please." he said with a smile, moving down a few stalls to speak quietly with an equally tall, dark skinned man with an impressive wingspan. They spoke quietly in italian for a few minutes, the words rolling like music from their lips. The harpy behind the counter glanced over at Mouse with a thoughtful look, then nodded. The two exchanged money for a small box, shaking hands.

"I will see you for dinner tomorrow, yes?" Bauta asked, the other harpy nodding. He walked through the crowd, keeping the people from brushing accidentally against his wings.

"There now, miss. A special gift for you made by my brother. I hope perhaps you will like it. Something to help you remember your first trip to our lovely city."

Being the curious little lady she was, Mouse wanted to discreetly eavesdrop on their conversation, but there were two problems that prevented her from hearing when they were talking about: the noise of the crowd made it nearly impossible for her to pick up anything, and the only Italian she knew amounted to "Hello", "Where's the bathroom?" and "I like chocolate cake." Oh well. It looked like they were related, so it wouldn't have been polite to listen in anyway.

"You really didn't have to..." she started, but her hands accepted the small box before her mouth could finish its sentence. Not like she could have refused. If she tried, then a loop of 'I can't accept this' and 'No, I insist' would have soon followed.

"A souvenir, huh?" the girl asked, fondling the little gift with her fingers. And like anyone who hasn't yet considered actually opening such a box, she continued with "What's in it?"

Bauta couldn't stop himself from preening ever so slightly. It was only a small thing, but he hoped she would like the token of his esteem. It was not every day he met such an interesting young lady and her...er....lovely pet in the marketplace.

Durem was his home, there was nothing wrong with having a bit of pride in the beauty of his city, or sharing that pride with a small souvenier.

Inside the box lay a small woman's pin. A little burnished copper beetle, its back catching the light in irridesent brown, bronze, and greens. Faintly, the little beetle ticked, a little clock face hidden beneath the metallic wings.

"To help you remember your visit today, Miss."

"Oh."

It certainly was an interesting little item. Mouse usually didn't go for jewelry, but it was very easy to tell that the tiny ticking beetle pin was one that appealed to her tastes. Now if only she actually had something to wear it with, and a place or occasion where it would be appropriate. Her normal attire didn't feel like the sort of terrain she'd allow such a lovely little clockwork insect to traverse.

"Umm, thanks. It's really nice," she said more than a little awkwardly, fiddling with the pin until the clock part of it opened. And then, a small doubletake at what the miniscule hands and numbers told her. "Is this accurate?

A glance up at the city's clock tower showed that it wasn't too far off. "I should probably get going. It's a bit of a drive back home and I don't want to hit traffic if I can help it."
