Again, as many of you said, English is an official language in 28 of the 50 states, despite not being on a federal level and legislation is passing through the House of Representatives to officially make English the official language of the country.
States in dark blue have declared English as an official language. Looks like most of the US, right?

About my tension point, maybe you don't live in an area of the country where there is racial tension, but try areas of Southern California or western states that are heavily affected. Think it's not a big deal? In 35 of the country's 50 largest cities, non-Hispanic whites are or soon will be in the minority, and recent studies have projected that at the current population rate, whites in the US will be a minority by 2050, at 47% of the population. Good example of racial tension:
“We're being overrun,” says Ted Hayes of Choose Black America, which has led anti-illegal immigration marches in south-central Los Angeles, California. “The compañeros have taken all the housing. If you don't speak Spanish they turn you down for jobs. Our children are jumped upon in the schools. They are trying to drive us out.”Also, short CNN bit on immigration harassment:
http://www.yahoo.com/s/810224In this case, a legal citizen of hispanic heritage is wronged, which is part of the problem. People here legally are facing prejudice because of the illegal movement causing hostility.
The problems of illegal immigration are economical and environmental. Your tax dollars are aiding people not paying taxes, the economy sapped by workers sending money across the border to help their families at home. Watch the population boom urbanize what's left of the inhabitable rural or untouched southwest and drain water supplies.
