Starlock Blind Guardian the 2nd ... what people believe and what is true are different things. Are they now? wink Well, this is what the notion of reality proposes. If there is such a thing as reality, then that means someone out there is wrong about a certain subject.

Keziah Rose Yes, I am extremely interested in religion, and I usually do believe in the supernatural. But I'm also an existentialist, and used to be a nihilist, so Nietzsche is the one I'm most apt to quote since I know his material best. And I might not agree with EVERYTHING he says, but what he has to say about truth and reality, I do agree with, at least for the most part. sweatdrop I do study religion extensively, I do conduct research. But I grew up secularly, and never have been a member of any religion. Because of my past, I still have a foot in each door. Some days I am an atheist, other days I'm a theist. Some days I believe in the supernatural, other days I think it's just something that arises from human's need to find some sort of meaning in life, even if that means they have to create it. Both sides of me bleed into each other. Buuuut, that's not something I USUALLY broadcast around, because it is really confusing. eek Everything else in this thread aside... you and I are extremely similar, apparently. I don't know if I should be disturbed or intrigued...

The FLCL Guy Blind Guardian the 2nd The FLCL Guy Ok I think its fair to say all you guys have clearly shown reality is fluff so know what about everything else? Well, I was more making the point that reality is subjective. Some things, no matter how true or false, will not be believed. Its only subjective to something unknown and/or theories but things that are known are real, like an orange, we all have seen an orange so they are real. Now dont give me philosophy becuase it just goes in circles. (this is in reply to all those who replied on this post) Yes to people who have been in contact of an orange its real, but to someone who never been in any contact with an orange or even knows what it is they most likely going to believe it exists. Why?, Becuase an orange colored fruit is not to weird. So the question is how do you describe and prove an orange exists to one who doesnt know anything about it? Well you start by explaining it grows on trees, is the color orange, and tastes umm like an orange. What Im trying to get to is that the question is not "Is it posibly Fluff?" Its "What do you think is real, beyond a doubt(assuming reality is real)? What do you think is fake, beyond a doubt(assuming reality is not-fake)?" So describe and try to prove what you believe exists.

The FLCL Guy You and the rest of these people are just dodging the question. Ok let me ask you this, Why do you believe what you believe? Because I have experienced them, or have seen sufficient evidence supporting their existence. However, I acknowledge that all this evidence supporting my beliefs could be all screwed up. It's a chance I take.

We're not dodging the question, we're trying to explain it to ignorant imbeciles like yourself. People believe what they believe because of personal experience and sensory perception. Maybe if you actually tried to comprehend a post or two, instead of just reading what you want to read, you'd figure out that I've said this already. That which can't be explained by either of those comes to exist in two ways: blind faith or logical reasoning. No one knows anything for sure, especially about religion. If you haven't noticed, a question that most religions tend to shirk away from is, "What if we're wrong?" Most people don't want to think about that. And, from what I've seen, neither do you.

To attempt to distract for a moment... and maybe lighten the mood a little bit.... Pascal's Wager, FTW (I don't care that people are tired of it, and I care even less that he meant the Catholic faith in particular) ! EDIT: I also intend to make a serious post of potential substance a little bit later...

Currently Im one the few that has actuely showed some evidence of what I believe and yet you guys dont know enough about what you guys believe to put the slightest information about it? And Im suposed to be the "ignorant imbecile". Maybe I should have just joined you guys posted something like this, How does one define existing?, is it something you can observe?, if its something you observe then its merely signals sent to your brain. And in that lies the true question, Is it posible that everything you believe exists doesnt truely exist?

I don't care what evidence you supply, you've got to believe in the validity of that evidence yourself. Essentially, it all comes down to belief. Also, how dare you criticise me for not knowing my own beliefs enough to post them here? Fact is, it doesn't matter what I believe if other people aren't going to believe it. As a supposed Buddhist, you should at least have a SLIGHT idea of what I believe, and if you don't, well, that's hardly my shortcoming, is it?

Right... well continuing the topic the thread was originally made for, I honestly think the Astral Plane thing is fishy. I mean, it just seems a bit strange. It just seems too warm and inviting, too surreal. I mean, think about in a different point of view. I'm not sure of the specifics but if there were to be an error in the brain's function in which you woke up during a dream without leaving, perhaps your body still being in a paralyzed state or some other cue that your brain thinks you're still asleep by, shouldn't you be able to control the dream. People who have done it before can do it again because according to them, it's not an error. It's a process and the brain accepts it.
While the specifics don't make much sense, I think you guys get the idea.
