"It is indeed a lot like family. They are my family, at the very least." The tail swished, gently stirring up the water around the circling fish.

"Family is always nice to have." She looked up and back toward the cliff face where she knew her family's home was. She loved all of them even the ones she'd never met. They would come visit eventually, one day, and she'd get to see everyone.

He lifted his head to follow her gaze, eyes focusing on the cliffs in the distance. He would never be able to visit there, but Ela seemed to have some connection to it. "The cliffs over there are lovely. They remind me of the ones in the deep ocean."

"My family lives there." She smiled softly. "Mamma lived down by the beach but when Daddy came into her life she moved there so that he could be with her." He had moved from his original home to be with mamma too but they were both happy so it turned out alright.
"There .. are cliffs under the sea?" She turned back to look at the sea creature.

"And you choose to live here instead?" It must be hard being away from family, but it was completely natural for children to go off on their own.
"And yes. Not exactly the same as cliffs on the land but they are very similar. Parts of the ocean have deep deep trenches, and on either side a cliff is formed. At least with sea cliffs you can't fall off."

She shook her head slightly. "I go back to the cliffs to sleep usually. I still stay with my parents. They seem to enjoy having at least one of us around." If nothing else it reminded them that they had a family somewhere and her mother seemed to know that she was good at making her siblings come visit.
"Trenches sound dangerous. What if you slipped and sunk faster than you could swim?"

"Ah...it would be tough seeing all of one's childrens move on in life. Necessary at times, but hard."
As for the trench question... "Well, underwater there is only the danger of sinking. You eventually hit bottom, and for those who get their air from the water surrounding them there's no danger in being under too long. At least with an underwater cliff you don't have to worry about slamming into rocks hard, and hurting yourself...or worse."

"Can you get air from the water?" He did live down there so he might be able to. It would be odd for him to be up here talking to her too though if he had to use the water to breathe like the fish.
