furfire Well... I can say right now that as of last year one year of band is considered half a PE credit, just like a Varsity sport, and it's written down as a sport or activity offered. Of course, the principle and vp both hate band and would rather take the band's money and give it to football or basketball, but that's beside the point. We have no support, but it is considered as much a sport if not more in my school. I wish! Our district won't even consider letting marching band qualify as a sport, though cheerleading makes the list. It's ridiculous. Half the cheerleaders' practices are sitting down or making signs, and when they are moving it is in no way intense! They scream and clap but have few strenuous moves. In guard, we practice with the band for 5 hours a week and independently for 2 hours, in addition to 5-hour practices before most Saturday football games and a couple of hours before competitions. We're outside in the heat and bad weather; cheerleaders are inside in the gymnasium or cafeteria. People think being enthusiastic and moving around is difficult? Try that running around the entire football field and using actual dance techniques and marching in time and working with live music, oh, and with a 6-foot pole, and then get back to me.

Band is a sport. Usually when people that don't concider that band is not a sport is that they don't know how hard we work while on the football field marching. It takes a lot of practicing to march, count, and play your instrument at the same time. We work just as hard as any other sport. It is just that they don't understand until you make them do it out in the field

Marching Band is a sport. We do just as much physical activity as any other sport out there...even cheerleading! Some of the football players here agree with us along with some of the cheerleaders that marching is harder than what they do, but would like to try maching band if they had any musical talent. Then if you look at DCI thats basically a sport...for godsakes its on ESPN!!! how much more sporty-er do you get than espn. Marching Band is more exciting than golf damn it!

I say Band's a sport, no doubt. Mainly because everyone agrees. And if they don't I make them. domokun
Besides, I'm an athlete AND I'm in band, and so is just about everyone else in band too. And the football players totally agree that we're awsum. ^O^

In my school, marching band IS a sport. The faculty gives us PE credits for it, so as far as I'm concerned, the faculty considers it a sport just like the others.

I definitely think it's a sport. Band kids work so much harder, and so much longer, than anyone else in the school, except maybe the band director...
In my school, one marching season counts as 1/3 PE credit. It sucks.

At my school, we need 3 semesters of PE to graduate and 3 years of marching band covers that (and considering marching band lasts a semester...) so its a one to one ratio, same as the athletics. So, our district considers it a sport and we get a lot of respect from the faculty at my school and most of the students, although the underclassmen on the jv and freshmen football sneer and throw jokes at us when they go in from their practice (and we're still out there, kicking tail). Their coaches yell at them and typically throw this at them "Maybe, if we worked as hard as they did - We'd be as good as they are!" Yeah, we love our football coaches and they love us =D
Marching band, definitely a sport. Think about everything you have tot hink about, at the same time, everything you have to execute.
A lot of people do not understand that band people are not just walking (or running) around on the field and playing their instruments in special patterns, but we're actually executing a certain Style. We have Techniques. We're holding our bodies so we can actually play, because its hard to walk and play, let alone run, thats why we March. A lot of people don't see that, and having one other person marching with you is enough, or just having a conscience mind is enough to give a wallop of competition to the sport. People who really care about marching strive to be the best they can and will work their tails off to try and meet that goal. My band does, we take pride in the amount of hard work we put into our shows and we love to see the crowds reactions ^^

if band isnt a sport than y do they give us varsity letters?? i mean come on they only give letters to people that play sports...and if it wasnt a sport than we wouldnt kill ourselves learning everything and competing in competitions and we sure as hell wouldnt be outside in extreme weather ranging from 30-100 degrees and be out in rain and snow even though metal instruments arent very compatable with either..but anyways its a sport so anyone who thinks otherwise should just accept it and stop arguing with us bandkids about it..

It is no doubt a sport, it takes a load of physical ability to be able to run a 4-5 at 182 BPM, it also takes mental ability to constantly count and this of where your next spot is.
