It may be because there is a hint the rem loves misa, as she dies for her, and when we're talking about films they have to edit anything like that out.

Do they call her a he in the movie. In the anime and manga rem being a girl confused me at first. I mean i didn't even notice 'till I got towards the end of the story. They probably did it 'cause the movie was confusing as it is.

They didn't change her gender. It said that they just made her voice more guy-like. She's still a girl, just with a more manly voice.
Also, they probably didn't want lesbien action in the movie, or something of that sort.

Well guys, considering the anime is slightly different from the movie, then wouldn't you think the shinigami's have a slight difference? And it could be possible that they preferred Rem to be a male because, well it kinda suits him in the movie.
