I guess I'll introduce myself too! I'm the drum major at a 9th and 10th grade school, that feeds into the (in)famous Plano East HS biggrin . We had a crowd of about 200 this year and our season rocked! I had two phenominal co-drum majors and several awesome section leaders who made the season go sooo smoothly! heart The only sad thing is that the season is over! crying
exclaim Shout out to all the DM's who went to Texas A&M - Commerce for camp this summer!!! exclaim

Huh, a 9th and 10th grade school? I've never heard of a school like that, though you must be in a bigger town/city to have half the grades but twice the people compared to my school... I've never heard of Plano East High School, where's that at? I'm from Jacksonville HS, though it's the Jacksonville in Illinois, not Florida, so we only have 80 or so people (which is big compared to two years ago). And yes, my school IS surrounded by a cornfield, like most midwest High Schools.

My singing isn't too bad, really. Except when the band tries to sing Happy Birthday. Because then I always try to sing loudly, but I have a three-note range when I'm shouting (although I only have an 11-note range when I'm singing). Then I spend most of the song attempting to discover what key we're in.

Jaja! I know what you mean! Part way through a song, I usually end up being able to sing something somewhat harmonius, though not the right note. Oh well. I just hope I don't have to be too good at singing to pass music in college. (I'm going in for education, so I heard they'll make me sing. U_U; wink

I think they make you sing, but they don't demand you sing well... I'm kinda hoping so, too, as I want to major in performance or education.

I have a friend who's going into Music Ed right now and I'm pretty sure they make her sing, but then they make her do everything too. As long as you can hit notes you'll do fine.

Okay..
Hey, I'm Rixu and I'm the assistant drum major of the Venice High School Marching Band. We're pretty small right now, about 30-40 people in the band and about 20 in the drill & flag. But at least it's not full of people faking their instruments. So, there. Haha.
I wanna be drum major real lots, I can't wait!

Cool! Congrats!

My school doesn't have assistant drum majors...what's it like? Are you guaranteed a place as drum major next year?

I was voted by band members and director after tryouts to be a drum major next year and I'm excited! I will be a Senior next year and have been in marching band for my whole highschool time 3 years on bass drum in the drumline and now going to be drum major next year ^^
Oh and our band usually consists of about 140 students.

yup yup!
You get the sweet uniforms, you do the Salute, and if your school's lucky enough you get a mace! Personally I like the mace. It's long and you can threaten your freshmen with it. biggrin
I miss Marching season...

And I don't know about other schools, but assistant drum majors around here are pretty much like regular drum majors, they conduct and salute like everyone else, but they don't have the experience of the veterans so they're usually on the side or doing the easier stuff. And you still have to try out for drum major here, but you have a very slim chance of not making the audition.

on a different note though, I think that more people should post here.

I like reading all of you guys' stuff. It will be really helpful later this year during tryouts.

We are going to have 2 new drum majors next year, and i'm hoping to be one of them.

Hope you make it! ^^
Even if you don't, if during try-outs you get to conduct the band for a song, it's a great experience!

Oh man! I do not envy you at all.... I had it so much easier than that, you must have one hardcore band if THOSE are the requirements... all I had to do for mine was conduct three songs and call commands for everyone to turn around everywhere. I only recal one time of ever doing what you'd call a basics block, and that was two years ago, I never did one. I hope someone can answer your question, because I'm not qualified.
