Zee14 Anyone here play the violin or any other string instrument? If you do, this is the place to be! I have been playing the iolin since 5th grade. I don't play in at school because in the city where I live they don't have orchestras in the schools. I would like to play in the youth orchestra they have where I live. I have been taking private lessons. I am SO happy that I am in book four of the Suzuki books. I should have already been in book four when I started my fourth year of violin but anyways... If things could get any worse, I have had four violin teachers. My first one taught me for my first two years then she died during the summer. Then my second violin teacher taught me for about two lessons and then moved back to where she used to live. She really stayed long. My third violin teacher taught me for the next 1 1/2 years at the university where I live. It stunk that she didn't teach during the summer. mad Now my fourth teacher, I currently take lessons from him. I also play the clarinet and I am trying to teach myself how to play the french horn and baritone ukelele.

The reason why I left my third teacher was because she was strict Suzuki. A little TOO strict. It really stunk.

The only instrument I play with strings is a guitar..=__=
*waves at all the cool stringed instrument people* Man you all kick a**....I love the sound of a violin..and a viola, a cello..I love it all. It makes me feel all bubbly and happy inside when I hear those... crying The only time I get to hear stringed instruments live is in the college orchestra..*sigh* Keep kicking a** you guys.

Mediocre_Flautist956 O__O I'm thinking of taking violin up guys...I just can't stay away from it. I don't have a lot of knowledge of it, can you give me any tips? xD Have you gotten a violin teacher yet? I enrolled in violin lessons with a teacher and on my first lesson she picked out a violin for me. The violins are all sized from a 1/16 (very, very small) to a full size violin (4/4). (Well, my violin lessons were upstairs above the music store, but you can still get the teacher to help you pick out the RIGHT violin.) It is probably best to rent one until you decide you want to stay with the violin and can pay it off.... If there are any questions that you have, you can send me a message. Hopefully I haven't confused you even more. It is prescribed to get a teacher so that you can learn how to play and take care of your violin. It is a wonderful instument. (Of course I would say that because I play it.)Well, if you have any more questions, I would be glad to help.

Sweet. The music teacher dude said I need a 4/4...hey, my friend who plays violin said that I should rosin the bow every other day or else I'll be screwed, while the guy at the shop said I don't have to do that for a long time. stare The guy wants to make money out of me and make me buy new bows!! scream

Good morning, all.
I don't play a string instrument full-time (my flute holds that position), but I do play guitar, and sadly have been unable to change the strings in many, many months. I don't have the proper equipment, which I should really get to purchasing--but that's not why I'm here.
I have a question for you all. What do you find is the best method of cleaning strings when you can't replace them? Mine have become pretty mucky, and leave all kinds of gunk on my hands when I play. Ick.
Sanku!

xd This thread looks like it's been dead since August... but oh well.
I am a viola player (five years), and there's no way you can get me to switch to violin. Reasons: 1. There's only three violas in our high school orchestra, as opposed to the violins (twentysomething if you combine first and second) and the 10-12 cellos... we're bigger than the double bass section, though... there's only two of them.
2. Too high pitched... I prefer high notes on the clarinet- they're smoother sounding (then again... I play the clarinet, so there's a little bit of a bias there sweatdrop )
I've also played the piano for seven years, and have finger-picked occasionally on the guitar, though I'm not very good with chords...
