Chapter 3
-Gerard’s POV-
Asia and I got more comfortable in each other’s presence as we made it through the next two classes. And by the end of the class just before lunch, Calculus, my arm was slung around her shoulders as we walked through the crowded halls into the cafeteria. All eyes were on us, especially from the table by the large window where the most influential members of the student body sat. Some were shooting daggers out of their bright eyes, while others looked relieved that they had a chance with – what was his name – Bradley again.
Asia winked at me and smiled as she gently pressed her deep red lips to my pale cheek. We heard gasps and snickers, and a few random wolf whistles, but mostly we heard Bradley’s frustrated growling. She led me to the courtyard of the school, which was probably one of the prettiest I’ve seen in my life.
The grass was completely green, no patches of brown amongst the blades. Benches, tables, and pavilions lined cobblestone pathways. Many of our peers sat on the tables, whispering to each other as the two of us made it to the sparkling white pavilion that housed Asia’s friends. We could see their stares penetrating our souls almost. It was actually kind of strange…
Before I knew it Asia and I were sitting at the wooden table, all eyes on us.
”What?” Asia asked.
“Hold on a second here Asia,” Amira said, looking back and forth at us.
“So… Gerard and Asia are sitting together, Asia’s giving Gerard kisses on the cheek, and Gerard has his arms wrapped around her?” Jamia asked. “All of you owe me and Ami ten bucks each.”
They all groaned in disappointment and reached into their pockets. I felt myself blush and Asia rolled her icy eyes.
“You f**ktards; we’re not dating. We’re friends. You all take things way out of context.”
All of them gleefully put their wallets back in their bags or pockets, and Amira and Jamia groaned in frustration. “So wait, the two of you aren’t together?” Casey asked.
“Must I repeat myself?” Asia asked, slightly irritated. “And it hurts that I wasn’t involved in this bet. Imagine the fun I could’ve had…” she said wistfully.
“Well sorry. It’s not you need the money anyway,” Ray told her. She swatted his shoulder playfully and rested her head on my shoulder. Everyone ‘Awed’ and ‘Ooo-ed’ at the gesture.
“We’re off to get something to eat. I’m starved,” Matt announced, standing up as Ray followed.
“Psh, as if the crap they call food here is really gonna help that. It’s just gonna stick to your ribs,” she told them, playing with my fingers with her soft hands.
“We’ll go with you,” Jamia agreed, pulling Amira up by the elbow and over to where Matt and Ray were already beginning to walk towards the inside of the cafeteria.
“GERARD!” We heard a voice call out. I looked over my shoulder to see none other than my little brother frantically sprinting towards us, his thin glasses nearly falling off his nose. He arrived quickly, startling everyone, as he panted and sat down next to me.
“Um, hi Mikey,” I said.
“Who is this?” Asia asked me.
“This is my brother, Michael, but we all call him Mikey.”
“Oh,” she responded. She extended an arm toward him and he took it shakily. She just smiled. “I’m Asia, a new friend of your brother’s.” He nodded in response.
“He gets nervous easily. He’s not that social,” I whispered almost silently. She nodded and her smile grew wider.
“You don’t have to be nervous Mikey, we don’t bite,” Asia told him, winking subtlety.
“Well, at least, we don’t. Asia’s famous for her canines,” Matt joked. It was only then that I realized how sharp her canine teeth were as she smiled. I felt my eyes begin to bulge out of my head. She just laughed again.
“Well, I only bite sometimes. Just don’t be loose with me on a full moon.” She smirked slightly as I laughed breathily. Mikey just looked scared.
“Come on Mikey; let’s go get some lunch.” He looked relieved to be away from Asia. I’d have to talk to him about that later. “Are you coming Asia?”
“As I said, the food here is s**t, so I’m gonna eat at home,” Asia said to me, reluctantly removing her head from my shoulder. “And your shoulder’s very comfy. You have a pillow under your shirt or something?”
I just laughed and asked Casey the same question. “Sorry Gerard, but I’m not hungry today. Besides, someone’s got to keep Asia company.”
Asia smiled at her and we all walked away, having conversations within the inner groups; Ray and Matt, Jamia and Amira, and Mikey and I. I looked back at Asia and saw her smile at me as Casey babbled to her. I felt my stomach flutter at the sight of her perfect smile. I wondered if you could have feelings for something you knew for a brief period of time?
“Hey Gerard, you okay? You’re really distant right now,” Mikey said to me.
“Yeah sorry about that,” I replied, my gaze wandering to my feet as I saw them shuffle across the stone path.
“It’s that girl, isn’t it?” he asked, being the all-knowing soul he always was. I sighed, and that was all I needed to do for him to know the truth. He smiled knowingly at me, and patted me on the back. “As creepy as she is, she seems nice.” He hesitated a moment before continuing. “Just don’t get your heart broken from this, okay?”
I looked at him strangely. Did he know something I didn’t? Nevertheless, I nodded a ‘yes’ and walked to the line for lunch, still feeling as if I was missing the punch line to a very important and entertaining joke.
