"True. In that case you will likely be the one winning." The words were spoken kindly. A compliment, perhaps, Nergal wasn't entirely sure about it himself. At any rate, that Luck should favor gloomy, boring him over the sparkling wonders that made up Lucius seemed unlikely. Especially since he could all too well imagine having made every effort to stomp out and eradicate their influence from his own domain.
Lucius' gentle tease promptly earned him a defiant glare from Underworld. "You may regret such kindness later," warned sulkily as he settled next to the table and reached for the coins, but there was a treacherous twitch to the corner of his lips. He weighed the small disks of ancient silver in his hand thoughtfully, wondering for a moment how well the game would go for the Lucius, with hands bound like this..
It was nice to see the other in such good spirits and actually enjoy the awkward company he offered, and right now he really didn't want for anything to put a damper on it. It would work out, somehow, he decided as he tossed the coins.(( Hm, 1/2 = Head, 3/4 Tail? That is, if you want to include dice rolling at all. n_~ ))

As it was already strained, Lucius forced the fingers of his right hand open some millimeters again until it looked like a sword or rod could be fitted through the hole of his curled hand. It reminded him of an action figure, as he gave a single pant of effort. He gave an uncomfortable laugh, "Forgive me if it takes my turns a little longer. Obviously I must play with a handicap."He pushed the coins off the side of the board into the awkward, claw-like cup of the opened right and then poured them out again. “Three tails, and that's the five to start a hound on the board." He used both hands to by pressure lift a hound from the floor between them and slot it onto the board. This promised to be a sore game, much like trying to get dressed. It was worth the trade, he thought, for some sort of meager diversion and something closer to living for both of them. He scooped the dice again, getting two heads. “Just make sure to keep the coins on the board. I don't think I could get them off the floor, flat on flat requires nails and fingertips, really." (( we likely, for time sake, shouldn't play out the whole game, since that could take many, many rolls of the dice to get 5 3 tails just to even get all the pieces on the board. 0___0 ))

"Do not worry," Nergal said with a wry smile, "time is something I currently have aplenty. Take as much time as you need, breaks even if it need be." He shrugged, considering to offer his help for but a moment, but in that case he might just as well be sitting in front of the board alone, playing all by himself - even he figured there'd be no joy found in that.
The blue-skinned deity scooped up the coins once more once Lucius was done with his move and stared at the board with a frown and a small pout. So, a five was needed to actually get started? The other hadn't said anything of this prior to the game.. He got three heads this time, and slid the coins to Lucius' side of the board after his roll, where it would be less of a chore for the other to pick them up. "Luck indeed seems to be siding with you," he muttered, "at least you got a head start right away."
This might take a while, he realized, even without Lucius' handicap. But it was true that currently he had plenty of time and little to do with it. This game turned out to be a quite welcome diversion from his usual attempts to come up with something 'useful' to do while he waited for Lord Illumin to return from those strange 'Ashlands'. He had thought.. hoped it would only be a matter of a few days until he would have a chance to speak to Light, but now.. he was starting to wonder if something had happened. Or, if everyone who was searching for Aristogeiton was eventually fated to disappear.
He broke off his current train of thoughts when he noticed one of the coins kept rolling, and his hand shot out to when it threatened to drop off the edge.(( Yus, feel free to fast forward. Lucius gets one hell of a head start, took 6 throws to finally get three tails for me when I just tried. =p So, mebeh we should just throw who wins in the end. n_n ))

"Luck was with me often in my youth, a fair breeze beneath small wings. I think I am too dark and heavy for her most of the time now."
"Fast hands for a slow rule." He regarded the cold-coloured hand warmly, "And where do you develop that sort of skill? The dead aren't known for their rapidity of movement ....." Perhaps a leftover from his host? It feels strange to play with innuendo. I hardly know him.As the game progressed, he considered that each of the star markers was itself a stake, in many of the old rules. Perhaps if they played again they could play like true kings, setting a stake for each date. Five prizes to win or lose, and a sixth for the who set of the game. Small wonder men would have lost whole kingdoms to the wagers. What would the other wager, given different circumstances? What would Underworld wager, given back his kingdom of death, stillness and silence. He hoped it would not involve grave goods. And himself? What could he wager, truly, that would be of worth to a king of funerals and solemn faces? He could remember the past...a night in the bed of the stars had been worth more then a world's worth of lives, not that it had been given except to one. But before hand-fasting, it had been. Jewels of stars, cloth woven of the sparkling pre-planetary fires and elements, crystal halls or lamplight worlds to fill halls and dreams. But what worth was any of it to a man who chose to listen to monotone hymns and smelled permanently of embalming fluids and dust? Nergal did not seem all that horrible, as bad as that line of thought made him out to be. He may change, the gears had turned long before he had accepted the invitation to the game, becoming something more stolid and stern, but at least they would have this. No matter how either of them changed. He threw the coins on the board, and moved his first hound into one of the goal spaces. "Will you have servant jackals, when you rebuild your gates?"
((my suggestion is we roll a die and whomever rolls higher wins the game?))

"Hmph, I wish." Nergal remarked grumpily. "There are way too many dead bodies walking about in this city, thanks to those cursed necromancers." The young god's voice was dripping with venom as he spat out that last word, and there was no doubt that - had he the means and the power to put an end to this and eradicate said necromancers for once and for all - he would do so in an instant.
"Besides," he added in a lighter tone, "while the bodies of the dead are at least supposed to remain still, that doesn't apply to their souls.. Try to capture one of the smallest, of the children, at some time - I promise they will give you a good chase." Not like he had ever tried - there was no need to as they seemed to flock around him at any given chance - but wistfully watching their games of tag on a regular base gave him a good idea of the speed those little devils possessed. To herd them all into his domain once the time came - whenever that might be - would be such a chore. Still, there was a certain fondness in his voice as he spoke of those smallest souls - they would be among the last to be collected, he'd unconsciously made that decision quite a while ago.
He remained quiet for most of the time as the game progressed, giving the coins a look of disapproval when the roll was not in his favor, radiating almost child-like smugness when it was though it had nothing whatsoever to do with his own skills and abilities.
Unaware of Universe's train of thoughts his own veered into a similar direction as he watched the other made his move. They were playing the game as mortals would, starting with something 'easy', as he'd said, and a 'friendly' stake - which held the promise of more difficult games as time progressed, and higher wagers. How would they play this game as gods, he wondered, perhaps using mortals as pawns? What stakes would be asked for or offered?
He couldn't think of anything he'd have to offer, as far as he remembered it had been mostly the mortals asking favors of him - grieving parents who begged to have their sons and daughters returned to them, oracles asking for the advice of deceased kings.. Gods had been rare to appear before his throne, sometimes requesting the soul of a devotee they'd held especially dear, or closing the gates for those warriors so that they might continue their fight even beyond death..
He remembered stories of heroes and nymphs, great kings and queens, being placed in the sky as stars and constellations after their decease.. But only from the books he'd read, so they might be nothing but that - just stories.
"I.. do not know," he replied on the matter of servant jackals as he tossed the coins. "Honestly, I do not even have the slightest idea on how to go about the rebuilding. I was confident it would all come back to me somehow after my rebirth," he admitted, "but it does not. And now.. I do not know." He moved the jackal which was furthest along its set path on the board, but it still seemed awfully far away from its goal.
Just like he was.(( Yaya, that's what I meant. *goes with the D 100 since she's used to it*
Hm~! *fondly remembers the Anubis warriors in The Mummy II* X3 ))

It was like he hadn't even heard the inneundo. Infact, Lucius was sure he hadn't noticed by the solid set of the brooding on the other's brow. Was this situation wonderful, as he could probably get away with nearly anything....or sad, as they were trying to cheer each others company? Nergal was spilling concerns close to heart. Perhaps he needed that, someone to listen and hear them, not necessarily give advice. Still, a strange companionship to choose. This was all a strange companionship to choose. And he did feel young again for it, and wanted to get away with everything. “Then take it not as a question of it will or won't happen. You are a god, and what is will move for you when you learn how. For now....if you could have anything....would you have jackals?" Two tails and one head, he moved a hound only one space. ((edit: lol, 66. Looks like Nergal wins a close game after all ))

"Hm.." Nergal picked up the coins and weighed them in his hand thoughtfully, not seeming wholly convinced. Did he have jackal servants before? He couldn't remember, no matter how much effort he put into it. Instead he imagined them as the paintings and statues of Anubis he had seen, half man, half jackal, their skin and fur jet-black - guardians, towering tall and intimidating, yet mysterious the same. He found he rather liked that idea.
"I might," he said, tilting his head slightly and peering down at the small jackal figurines on the board. It wasn't really important if he'd had them before, he decided. "But only if they wont fail me in this game," he added with a wry smile, tossing the coins. The threat seemed to have worked, for he promptly rolled three tails. Now that was more like it.(( WTF? XD; Close indeed. ))

The next couple of tosses meant nothing to his benefit. The piece could only be moved into the goal on an exact number roll. The Hounds were stuck outside their goal, milling around without precise direction. How true to life, starting well and then getting confused and stagnating. "The jackals aren't the ones throwing the coins, " he chided lightly. What was the saying? Don't shoot the messenger? Though his own coin tosses could use a pick me up. Alas that the game was so simple, based on chance, that no strategy could avail either of them to do better. Though the cup of luck was slowly re-balancing. The Jackals were gaining. He was not very talkative, this Underworld. Though their silences could hopefully be companionable enough. Time would tell, he hoped for the better. This was a good start, a good first throw.

"True that," Nergal admitted, absently flipping one of the silver coins back and forward over the back of his right hand fingers with playful ease. As soon as he realized what he was doing however, he stopped immediately and for an unguarded moment his expression hardened. His host's skills indeed, and if he could help it, none of it would become part of him, not ever. Others might have chosen to 'merge' with their hosts, but to him the idea still seemed outlandish and strange, revolting even. If he was to change, that change would be brought upon him by himself, not some mortal soul. He would not let her.
As his jackals continued to gain on Lucius' hounds the young god kept glancing up occasionally - eying the other's mass of cobalt blue hair with the hint of an almost mischievous smile on his lips. He recalled all too well how soft it had been. The silence they shared felt comfortable, to him at least, more so than any awkward attempts of making conversation or 'small talk' he could have come up with. Something seemed slightly amiss however, and he kept prodding his memories of his frequent visits to Music in an attempt to figure out what it was. Echo greeting him, Echo inviting him to take a seat, Echo serving tea.. Ah. "Should I.. uhm. Should I go get something to drink?" he made the hesitant offer.
There. Conversation. Awkward thing.

"Should you desire it, though I have no implements here in my apartments. You'd have to go down to the kitchen." It was part apology. His rooms were far from convenient anymore. He should either change that or find a new place to be anyway. It was becoming less and less tolerable. "I'd always just made use of the commons, especially since I was ....Harmodius' primary servant and support. I'd see to a great deal of everything. If I was going to clean it, why not use it. Do you have apartments here in the Pantheon, Underworld?"EDIT: I can type >_<

"I.." Nergal hesitated. "The last time I checked most of the items there seemed to be spoiled, so.." He shrugged. "It is not that important, really, though if there is anything you would like..? I do make a very good mocha, if I can get hold of the grounds." Nergal wondered what kind of beverages the other might enjoy, if any.
He arched a brow at Lucius' explanation but thought it wiser to say nothing on the matter though it certainly explained a thing or two. When the other asked his question, he shook his head. "I do not. This place is far too crowded for my taste. I have never felt comfortable in the company of others of my kind, and.." He shifted uneasily, his discomfort quite obvious. "There is someone here I do not get along with, mildly put. No, but I do live quite close, I share a house with Music." He blushed a little as his thoughts dwelt on the gentle goddess, and he quickly directed his gaze down to the game board. Hounds and jackals were almost even now, he noticed. "Actually," he added a little too hastily, "it is more like two separate houses really. Only in the same building.."

It was easy to move on, push it all away and aside now. He'd spent months dwelling on it all. The emotions and memories of that whole life were intimate and unnecessary right now. Not for sharing. It never went anywhere useful. Pity was not known to dwell long in the kingdom of the dead in fore-days anyway....nor was it pity he would ever seek. Besides, there was more interest in the nigh-gossip the other god vaguely offered about himself. Furtive, hunted glances down accompanied by faintest blushes on pallored cheeks. This Lady echo whom he lived with.... "You so emphatically assert that it is a separate arrangement. She is a crush of yours?" It was forward to come out and say it, but it seemed more natural and wise to be forthright with the other then going for elaborate waltzes of etiquette. Besides, this was an attempt at friendship. It wasn't as if his own love life weren't open game for the butt-end of jokes. It was certainly a well-known tabloid. He frowned at the game board once, tapping a hound on the head, "You shame your good start. "

"Ah.." Nergal's head jerked up with a startled look, very much resembling that of a deer frozen in the headlights. It was a good thing he hadn't gone for beverages earlier, or else he'd probably choked on them that very moment, spilling the liquid all over the place. As it was, he merely dropped the small jackal figurine he had been about to move, sending it reeling over the board until it was stopped by one of Lucius' hounds. "What?!"
He abruptly snapped his mouth shut before he could actually be stupid enough to add a perplexed: 'How did you know?!' because, now that his thought processes were recovering from the shock and slowly stumbling into motion again, it occurred to him that he really had been terribly obvious about it. To draw attention to a matter by trying to divert from it.. he'd have to remember that..
"She is.." He took a deep breath, taking some time to make sure his fingers didn't tremble treacherously before he moved to pick up the small, carved figurine again. "She is. A little more like that. I--" He stopped, wondering if it really was such a good idea to tell Lucius about it. His feelings about her. His hopes. But then again he had been the one to bring it up, and he had been the one to come here in the hopes to, perhaps, find a friend.. One had to take risks, even if it 'only' was at the hazard of being embarrassed and making a complete fool out of himself.
"I.. I-I think.." He shut his mouth once more, cursing himself inwardly for his mindless stammering as he kept turning and twirling the delicate and finely carved figurine in his fingers. "I think that I may possibly.. court her," he finally finished and put the jackal down into its slot. "At some time." His blush was strong enough to make him feel as if his whole body was burning, but at the same time he felt strangely relieved. Echo knew of his feelings of course, but this was the first time ever he had mentioned his vague hopes of turning those delicate feelings for one another into an actual relationship to anyone.

"How lucky the love, so earnestly sought. How joyful the heart it finds. " The trembles did not escape his notice, even one-eyed. He had sought such clues himself, ages ago. Had felt them himself, a life ago. "It doesn't seem as though you are accustomed to courting, but instinct and perseverance will probably serve where experience lacks. You can discover everything together. ""Both loves are reborn, as well, if you seek council. But you seem wise enough....or at least good at guesses and judging things for certain. " He gave a small smile. Judges of law weren't always the best at matters of the heart. But deductive reasoning should help the fellow at least with choosing gifts and favors to bring. What dates to take her on. The jackals had pulled ahead of the hounds. Lucius fluffed his wings, flapping them once with mock-agitation with another useless throw of the coins.

"Hm.. thank you." He smiled shyly, a little surprised by the encouraging words which were offered. He had been expecting.. more teasing, probably.
"But I think I will prefer to not have Love meddle with my affairs - neither of them. At least Desiderio I remember to have been quite a pest." Love's stubborn persistence about reuniting lovers within his domain in ages past really had been quite a sore.. Enough for him to remember about it even after all that time and the Fading. But instead of displaying his usual annoyance about the topic Nergal seemed rather amused for a change, actually even smirking a little. He was in an exceptionally good mood, even despite the embarrassments. "I would not want to maneuver myself into a position that might make him think I owe him.."
But he kept wondering, inwardly, if it wouldn't be Echo to step forward to do the actual courting. Her domain seemed so much more suited for poetry and love songs, nightly serenades..
He picked up the coins once more, trying to focus on game and conversation instead of slipping off into daydreaming. "Lady Luck seems to have changed her mind once more about whom to favor," he mused has he moved one more jackal into the goal area and then leaned back. Even though his cheeks were still burning he seemed a lot more at ease and relaxed than when he had first stepped into the room hours ago.
"So. What about you? You surely must have had your fair share of suitors and perhaps.." He hesitated, praying he wasn't treading on grounds too treacherous with this. "Is there.. someone.. now?"
