Zack had turned his back to Cloud, but quickly in surprise turned back to the young blonde hearing his named almost whispered. Then, he saw Cloud coughing and he was sure he wasn't dreaming as the other hacked out his name.
Zack instantly knelt down in front of Cloud, his hands on the others shoulders gripping them tightly.
"Cloud? ... What is it?"
He told himself to just calm down. He closed his eyes, re-opened them, and smiled.
"What is it?"

Cloud groaned, rubbing his eyes.
"The sun... too bright..." he complained, keeping his hands over his face.
Where the hell was he? Zack had said something about going to the city and a place to stay. The last thing he clearly remembered was waking up in a tube and then being injected with Gaia-knows-what.
"W-where are we going?" Cloud coughed again, his voice sounded ... wrong.

Zack ruffled Cloud's hair lightly.
"The sun will be going down soon, but..."
Zack leaned over Cloud a bit more, as if too provide the other a bit more shade.
"It's just like I told you, Cloud. We're going to a place I know in Midgar. We're going to be mercenaries. We're going to be rich and---"
He was soon cut off by the driver.
"If you feed your friend there anymore bullshit, I'm kickin' you off right here."
Zack just rolled his eyes.
"He's just jealous of what we're going to be, something he never was,"
he said under his breath.
"Anyway, we're almost there now."

Cloud smiled a little, glad Zack hadn't changed at all.
"But you always feed me bullshit," he joked, still not used to the way he sounded. "We were in those labs a long time, weren't we?"
Cloud looked down at himself, trying to see how much had changed. Definately taller. Definately not sixteen anymore.

Zack changed his expression to much like a child's after his or her feelings had just been hurt. He pouted his bottom lip quivering in exaggeration.
"Cloud, you're mean! Why would you say that?!"
He quit it with the fake dramatic face, and quickly smiled, now standing with his hands behind his head. He looked down at the blonde.
"I guess it was a pretty long time, but put it out of you're head. We're free, now."

 Barret let his thoughts wander as Tifa prepared him his drink. Despite his resolve to go through with the mission he couldn’t help but think about the lack of backup. He and the others had considered recruiting new members in the past, but finding someone they could trust that had skills they could use was a whole different story. ShinRa has classified Avalanche as “terrorists;” disturbers of the peace. President Shinra went as far as to offer a hefty reward to anyone who could provide information that would lead to their capture. Times in the slums were growing desperate and recruiting was becoming too risky of a task to undertake.
The sound of the glass sliding across the bar snapped Barret out of his stupor. He stuck his hand out and caught the glass, his fingers closing around the smooth surface. He nodded at Tifa in thanks before taking a large gulp. As he drank he slowly began to let his doubts and recruiting slip out of his mind. This was no time to forget his objective. He set the cup down on the bar and rose from his stool. “Yo Tifa, I’m goin’ to be downstairs.” He said, walking over to the pinball machine. “Call me if the others ever decide to show up.”
Barret cautiously glanced over his shoulder before the floor beneath the pinball machine began to lower into the hidden basement of the bar. It was a tiny room that served as Avalanche’s base of operations. The room itself was just like everything else in the slums, worn and shabby. In the middle of the room stood a makeshift table, in the corner was a battered, used punching bag that had seen better days. Hanging on one of the concrete walls was a dry erase board that was cluttered with notes about the upcoming mission. The only thing of worth in the room was a tiny computer that Jessie had loaned to them. It was old but with Jessie’s skills they had acquired much information from it.
He turned on the TV that stood in a corner before sliding into a seat and once again studying the schematics of the Mako Reactor. His index finger traced carefully over the path they had plotted days ago as his mind was searching for any flaws in the plan. He paused and glanced at the TV as the news came on. ” Top story: There has been a reported breakout from one of Shinra’s labs two days; although the Shinra will not specify what exactly escaped from its labs they want to assure everyone that the situation is being dealt with.” "Damn Shinra," He muttered before going back to the schematics.

Cloud laughed a little at Zack's melodramatic actions and braced against the truck to move. He wobbled a little, a combination of disuse and the vehicle's movements. The truck lurched and he grabbed Zack's shirt, looking for help and stability, and ended up bringing the other down to the truckbed with him.
"Sorry, I guess I need to work on that," Cloud apologized, attempting to pick himself back up.

Zack was surprised at first, as he fell down with Cloud onto the bed of the truck. He smirked however, at Cloud's apology.
"Good thing you've got someone like ME here to help you, huh?"
Zack winked as he sat up and gently slid Cloud's arm over his shoulder, helping the blonde rise to his feet. Zack was a bit taller than Cloud, and so he adjusted his position to match Cloud's. They both appeared as a slouched mess.
"Maybe I'm not a big help afterall,"
he laughed.

Cloud looked at his feet, and then at Zack. He didn't have to tilt his head half so much to look his friend in the eye anymore.
"I really grew, didn't I?" Cloud said, more to himself than Zack.
It was a little frightening, as it made Cloud realize just how much time he'd missed locked up and in a mako coma. He'd missed the remaining years of his childhood, clearly over 18 by now.
"How much time do you really think we were in that lab? I know I keep asking but... It must have been awhile, because I got a lot taller and my voice doesn't slide anymore."
Of course, Cloud knew full well Zack hadn't had the time or presence of mind to look at a calendar in the escape. He barely did in day to day life, relying on Cloud to know the date and day of the week.

Zack sighed, as he had wanted to avoid the subject. He knew it'd come again eventually though, and he supposed Cloud expected an answer to make him fell 'all better'. He didn't know what to say.
"Yeah, it's been awhile. And you've changed..."
Zack looked towards the sky.
"But you're still you. We've been in there for years, it's hard to pinpoint of long exactly..."
The raven-haired man looked back at his friend. His expression was sad, as he forced a smile. He felt bad for Cloud, and what he must be feeling.
"Once we get to Midgar, everything will fall into place..."

Cloud knew Zack didn't want to talk about it, and the forced smile reinforced it. A sad Zack Fair was not a good Zack Fair, so Cloud let the subject drop.
"Not that I don't appreciate it but could I maybe try walking myself?"
Cloud was pretty sure he'd fall flat on his a** in two steps, but he was going to have to stand on his own two feet again and needed to start somewhere.
"So, tell me about where you're going?" Cloud asked, trying to get to a happier subject.

Zack was hesitant at first, but he nodded and let Cloud stand on his own while returning to his normal height.
"Don't you mean tell you about where WE'RE going?"
He corrected.
"Not too long now,"
the old man driving called back to them.

Cloud wobbled a little, but managed to stay upright, holding his arms out for balance.
"You know what? Shut your face, Zack. I just woke up from a reaaaallly long nap," Cloud joked with him, taking a few tentative steps.
He managed a few before getting light-headed and falling a few feet from Zack. Cloud stretched out like a cat sunbathing, smiling.
"I'll just stay here until we're there. Midgar, right?"

Zack grinned, laughing slightly.
"For being much older, you still act like the same little kid you've always been,"
he said, though he wasn't exactly the one who had the right to rant about ones level of maturity.
"You're wobbling around like a fool,"
he taunted and laughed fully. After a moment when his laughter subsided, he added:
"Yeah, Midgar. Wake up already, Cloud."
He winked.

Cloud rolled on his back and looked at the sky. It was nice to finally see it, especially without the mako green clouding it.
"You're one to talk. I'm younger than you and I act like the older one," Cloud teased, sticking out his tongue.
He went back to looking at the clouds passing by, and smiled sadly.
"Wish I had a home to go to."
