Muay Thai is one of the greatest fighting arts ever and like soul said the clinch is hard to master...Usually im Like You Martial J i keep distance with kicks and just foot jab when ever some one moves in. One thing i say that works for me are the check kicks, i use them as stop hit to block A leg assault from my opponent. or even better when some one throws a kick at you rather hook the leg and sweep there base out, or move in throw the leg down and box with them a bit{ Only if you a good boxer}

That's a good strategy, and it does work. I have leg catching down pretty well, but the clinch is tricky.

Here's a good video with some good clinch tricks by Malaipet.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=brYgHlH6h0s

The clinch is a real important part of your Muay game, because strikes in the clinch can hurt alot more... especially if you're pullin them into the strikes... not to mention the eblows and knees are alot harder. Its DEFINITELY not as easy as alot of people HERE say... and here in America, most Americans tend to neglect this part of their training more than others. You can just tell by the way they fight.

But as far as when to get in the clinch.... i mean, you really can get in at ANY time. Some easy quick tips.... learn to clinch wit one hand if you aren't already doing that. That means grab hold wit the one first, then secure with the other hand. Learn to also push you opponent away and out of the clinch, if you aren't already doing that. And clinch doesn't necessarily mean yall gotta lock up. You may hit wit a few strikes, grab and strike a few, then push out into a few more. But honestly, it all depends on your trainer, and how often yall use knees and/or elbows.

Well he grew up in Thailand, so he's been fighting all his life. He's over here in Cali now and teaches. He actually has a fight coming up in Las Vegas pretty soon. Should be a good one.

Nah, he's a great fighter. He's had over 165 fights easily. And he's a former champ of Thailand's Rajadamnern Stadium. IKBA Champ, IKKC Champ, and he's fought Lumpini several times, though he didn't win. So the guy has stripes in Muay Thai. You can't really take Tats too seriously mayne, he likes to talk alot of useless trash. xd

Yeah, took me a moment, but I caught on. So where in Cali does he teach? I'd love to get some lessons from him.

What are thoughts on use of the knee? I've learned to use it, but I'm interested in some the ways others use it.

Wow, you've asked a really silly question J. No offense, but asking "thoughts on the knee" is the same as askin what are thoughts on the punch? I mean, I would HOPE the thought would be to STRIKE wit it? There are probably just as many punche as there are knees. So maybe you need a more direct question?

He teaches out in Upland. Whereabouts are you?

Ok, what kind of combinations do you use the knee? In retrospect that was a bad question. I was just trying to change the subject lol . Also, coming from a Tae Kwon Do and Capoeira background, I haven't done anything in a fully direct discipline like Muay Thai and the knee isn't used very much in TKD or CA so I thought I'd ask about combinations with the knee that work better in Muay Thai.

Shovel Punch > all

Meh, that punch is nothing without the proper set-up, just like any other punch.

Dude, if we're talking about that then a stiff jab > All.

Seriously though, the Shovel punch is great because it's really confusing if you've never really dealt with it before, the angle is so awkward.
