He rolled back over so that he could glide down, giving his wings a soft flap until he could even out. "Nope, not bad at all... There aren't many who can actually make it up that high right off the bat. You've got determination, that's for sure." He glanced back over his shoulder. "We'll land by the lake... It's not much farther."

"There was a thermal," Kal panted by way of explanation. He certainly wouldn't have been able to get that high on his own, determination or no determination. Landing by the lake sounded good, the little alicorn would probably need a drink after pushing himself like this.

"There usually is." He chuckled as he did another roll, more for his own amusement than for any purposes of showing off. He loved feeling free and up here was where he could feel it the most.
Once they neared the lake he began to descend, circling around it several times, each one bringing him lower than the last turn until he touched down on the 'sands' of the shore.

Kal's drop was much less graceful, as he came in he had to give one last shaky flap of his wings to be sure he landed safely, instead of crumpling into a tired heap on the ground. His panting sounded harsh in his ears, so he tried to casually regain his breath before he joined the other stallion again.

He tilted his head towards the smaller stallion, brow lofting slightly. "Everything okay? Take a deep breath or two and get something to drink. You're safe on the ground now."

Kal did just that, taking several large, gasping breaths before trotting unsteadily to follow the white stallion. "I'm... I'm okay," he panted. He offered a half-convincing smile before continuing his wobbly walk to the water's edge, and then proceeded to drink as though his aim was to swallow half the lake.

"It gets easier with practice." He nodded slowly, golden curls bouncing against his muscled neck. "Don't drink too fast, kid... You'll wind up getting a cramp in your side and that will be far worse than overworked wings."

Kal reluctantly pulled back. He felt a little bloated in a tolerable way, but he really didn't want to give himself something worse than the tired, shaky feeling he already had. At least he wasn't so out of breath anymore.
"You must do a lot of practice, I've never seen anyone fly like that before," he said, fidgeting slightly as he tried to resist drinking more to soothe his dry throat.

"Flying is the easiest way for a guy like me to get around... Walking through the woods is a bit difficult with wings this size unless there's a path." More chance to be found by someone or something unpleasant if you were out in the open though. The last thing he wanted was for someone to try capturing him. No thank you. He enjoyed his freedom far too much.
"Practice makes perfect."

Kal smiled a bit. "I like the woods, but I'm pretty small so I don't get caught up on as much, I suppose." He was almost more comfortable walking through the woods as he was walking anywhere else, and he rarely flew from place to place. With as little flying as he did, it was a wonder his wings didn't seem to simply shrivel up and fall off from lack of use.

"Wings can be a very good asset to use. Mine have gotten me out of a scrape or two." They had also gotten him into a few but there was no reason to elaborate on that. "Couldn't hurt to give 'em a flex every now and then."

"I'm not strong enough, I wouldn't be able to fly away to escape anything, I don't think." He was not particularly fast or skilled, anything he flew from would simply be able to follow him on the ground until he was forced to land, and then he would be too tired to make a second escape attempt. His first instinct had always been to run and hide, not fly away.

"You're only as strong as you strive to be." He nodded slowly. "All you have to have is enough faith in yourself to practice and practice... Even if you do it in a place that you don't think anyone will see you. You'll never get better unless you try."

"B-but I'm not pure wind, I-I d-don't think I built in a way that would let me be any better at flying..." The little stallion frowned, pawing at the ground unhappily. He wasn't pure unicorn either, and although he was really good at healing, he could only be considered really good for a halfbreed.

"Who says you have to be pure one thing or another to be good at something?" He snorted, eyes narrowing slightly as he shook his head. That was the sort of attitude that he didn't think he would ever be able to accept; not having been mocked for being the way that he was for so long throughout his life. "If that's the way you want to think, fine... But you're going to have to think it around someone else. I won't hear it."
