I read something a while ago about this guy who played Phantom (in Canada, I think) portraying his organ playing as a sexual experience. I'd really like to see that, it kind of makes sense. He tries to replace physical contact with something he's passionate about. Or maybe his body does it unconsciously. Either way, it's an interesting thought.
My take on it is, Erik wants Christine's body and soul, Christine isn't especially horny for anyone, but she loves Raoul (any particular reason no one here likes him?). She was just singing the lines in the opera because she's professional. C'mon, did she really want Piangi, either?
"This face, which condemns me to wallow in blood, has also denied me the joys of the flesh." That's relative, isn't it?
I hope Erik's attractiveness isn't distracting during the movie. It kind of changes his character; like, he's actually attractive except for this one quirky disfigurement, which makes him more attractive. I don't think that's how it should be at all.

I liked his disfigurement in the movie because its based on something real, its something people can actually have happen to them. Whereas in the play and the book, its simply impossible for anyone to have actually been born with the deformities they show/describe.

He does just disappear several times, doesn't he?

He was a genius/inventor/architect/composer/etc. 3nodding

He wanted to get it on with her. Listen to the lyrics of Point of No Return a little closer. It will explain all.

Oh yeah, when I saw Erik's disfigurement, it looked so damn real. I swear, I saw his facial vein's pulse! eek
Poor Erik, he does deserves the 'joys of the flesh'.

MahouShoujoGoat I think the unreality of his disfigurement fits his actions. He does just disappear several times, doesn't he? And the fact the lighting was hiding Erik's deformed face, I think special effects was done to create those shadows intentionally. Steve Jackson did the same thing for LOTR.
