Erasmas Neither, really. It's to discuss views, and why they feel that way, and to explain my views, and why I feel that way. Most arguments I get into I don't intend on fighting it out. Discussion =/= debate. I also don't go in to referee and police people's views. That's a common disposition. I don't go in to basically say, "uh, appeal to tradition, two minutes in the penalty box!" or "you're gonna have to pay a hefty fine for that ad hominem, young lady". That's ridiculous, but a lot of people have that attitude. Actually discussion is part of debate and sometimes arguements happen. But insults, mudslinging,ect...isn't part of it and shouldn't be. Without facts and arguing for your side, you won't get anywhere (in fact some people won't believe the facts saying that is biased).

Then I can see why we have a difference of opinion. I go in knowing I'm being watched by people who are trying to decide which way they feel strongest about. I don't want to play the game of throwing insults and seeing who can shout the loudest. That got old in elementary school. They antagonize because the ones who act that way know it's all they've got. I've got more than that. I don't need to act that way. And quite frankly, I've already convinced a few people that pro-life isn't based all on emotion by not resorting to those tactics, so I don't mind refraining from giving in to their taunts.
But if I went in without caring how my words would affect other people, I suppose I might lash out at them when I got angry.

Erasmas WatersMoon110 If by "re-think their position" you mean "report your post" then you are right. Eh, let 'em report the post. I don't know the mentality of the mods, but if someone calls me an a*****e, and I call them one back, I don't see I'd be the insitgator and bad guy. I'm sure I've been reported plenty of times. How many times have my posts actually been deleted or have I been banned? Not many. Flaming back is still flaming. As someone who does report many a thread and post, I feel I do know the basic opinion of the Mods. If someone flames you, you have to report them (at least, on Gaia - in real life you can't, of course). Responding to them just gets both of you in trouble.

Without facts and arguing for your side, you won't get anywhere (in fact some people won't believe the facts saying that is biased). Eh...I can't say I agree with that. A discussion is a discussion and a debate...is a debate. A discussion is where you sit and bounce ideas off one another. Even if you disagree, you can explain your views with the unspoken notion that there is no prize to be won; there is no winner. A debate is a competition. It's to one-up your opponent to win. Of course, there has to be an impartial third party to announce the winner, otherwise it's just a debate with no end in site. I agree that insults and mudslinging shouldn't be involved, but then again, I don't think shutting down once someone calls you a name is beneficial. It actually says something about them. It shows why they are arguing and what they're arguing at that point. If someone is calling you a name, and you're just sitting there all like, "well now that's not nice at all!", you look like the a**. You might think they do, but people are stupid, as cynical as that sounds. They don't understand maturity and reason and self-efficacy and modesty and nuance. Not in this debate, at least. So it's best to not hold yourself to any social standard of righteousness if that's not your natural inclination. I know it's not mine. You push, I push back. I rarely (if ever) push first. If yours is to shut down emotionally, or disregard anything they have to say, that's fine. It's just not the way I do things. And really, it's best to acknowledge that's not the way they do things, either.

I mean, our argument doesn't need a ton of links and stats and facts. It never has. It's just basic, common sense that you need to understand, oh, 80% of it. It's the pro-choice side that should have to convince people to allow for something like killing your unborn child. I don't see why our side is burdened with the responsibility of having to make an argument for the mammalian reproductive system and the virtue of making wise choices.

It takes elementary school 'Rules and Responsibilities' and dumbs them down even more. Because there is a such thing as instigating a situation that would not have occurred had it not been for one person. I understand you have to, at times, be the bigger person and walk away from the argument. But I also know that it's dumb as hell to take down BOTH parties just because one of them is an a*****e and the other just isn't going to accept it and walk away.

There are tons of people under the belief that it's all emotional, not logical at all, because there are tons of places where people on the pro-life side act exactly like the prominent pro-choice people on Gaia act. And I never just say, "Well that's not nice!" I ignore the nastiness of the remark and continue making my point, just like I would with a child. I call them on just making an attack instead of answering the question. It's easy to do. It's very possible to face an attack without responding in kind. It doesn't mean backing down, or walking away. It means responding in a more adult fashion.
