Well, the frei was smiling- that was a good sign! At least he was trying not to be afraid, and that gave Mouse a bit more confidence as she backed out of the driveway and out into the road. And even though it shortened the time it would have taken to get back to Durem by scooter quite a bit, it still turned out to be a bit of a long drive.
To see if it would help keep the Raevan calm throughout, Mouse made a proposition. "Hey, how about a little game? Every time the lightning flashes, try and count how many trees there are before it gets dark again." It felt a bit silly to suggest something she hadn't done since she was about eight... but it incorporated things she figured that Eiry liked, so maybe it would help a bit. Besides, car games like this were fun!
And since the route more or less skirted the city entirely, there was nothing obscuring the odd tree to mark its silhouette against the lightning.

The young frei screwed his mouth as the details of the game's game play was spelled out to him. Alright...Well, it was something to distract himself from the fact that he was in the belly of his enemy. Tucking himself as close as he could to Isi's chest, Eiry stared with his blood red eyes out the window. The grey sky was massive and heavy, lying close to the ground as it let loose raindrop tears. A strand of lightning struck the earth Eiry immediately began counting the trees that were lit up by the electricity.
"One, two...Three...Four...Five...." he counted softly to himself.
"Thanks, Mouse," Isi said, shifting uncomfortably so that he could accompany his raevan gathering himself in his arms. It was odd, he thought, for a raevan to be tucking himself against a child's chest, but what could you do? He sighed and laid an arm around Eiry's shoulder.
