I played flute for marching band, but I'm in Front Ensamble (pit) for indoor percussion. Though I play piano for indoor, the front ensamble captain is making me learn vibes as well. Any tips?

I play marimba, glockenspiel, vibes and cymbal. My band director basically had me running around to all the differant instruments during the songs. gonk It's hard being a first year pit percussioninst and being thrown into the section leader role at the same time! >.<
Any other section leaders here?
(Btw, my cheap school has crud vibes too.)

I like any sort of percussion instrument thats set up like a piano. For my school, I play the bells, chimes, marimba, xylophone, yea...all that stuff. It's really easy if you know how to play piano. I am gonna try and learn how to play with 2 mallets per hand heart

Our mallets are their own section. If our BD says drumline go get food first we go with them, if the BD says pit go get food we are a part of the pit. XD he doesnt care either....if he notices..

My first year it was just two of playing mallets. we made up our own slogan. MALLETS ALL THE WAY! GO PIT GO!

...im not weird. XD

out mallet section consists of a marimba, a xylaphone (that is out of tune...it is actually made up of differnt keys from different xylophones.), chimes, vibes, and glockenspeils.

i can play with two mallets in each hand! whoo.

I know what you mean. I had to create me a stand to set next to my marimba to put things on so I could play accessories while I was resting while switching mallet instruments.

I'm section leader as well. smile

Oooh, we're doing this fun song this year, and the marimba part that I'm on is four mallets the whole song, and it makes me happy. It's that song in the diamond commercials called Palladio. We have 32s at the end of the song...kinda worried about those with four mallets in my hands...

I play in the front ensemble for the Miami University Marching Band as well as Miami's Symphony Band. I primarily play mallet percussion 2 and 4 mallets.

BTW, Cross-grip rules...that is all.

Rain Dance by Alice Gomez
and Yellow After the Rain by Mitchell Peters

These pieces are probably 2 of the most commonly played 4 mallet pieces as they help build two different very important 4 mallet techniques.

Rain Dance has a lot of playing without having individual mallets going. Meaning simply put, that the 2 mallets that are in the same hand, are usually hitting at the same time. It also has a decent roll section that will help you practice rolling 4 mallets with one hand stretched a couple notes past an octave.

Yellow After the Rain has a LOT more lateral movement. Individual mallet movement and lateral chord sections make this piece what it is. This piece will help you a LOT with controlling individual mallets while holding 4.

I hope this helps you ^_^

I play mallets both marching and concert season. But what I hate the most is during concert season our band director puts at least another person on mallets. Being the drummers they are they do not know the notes on the staff and always come to me for help. I don't mind but when they ask the same stuff over and over again that gets on my nerves. Any ideas how to keep this from happening???

Tell your director, he'll make them play mallets and they'll be forced to learn.
If they ask you the same thing over and over just say 'I already told you. Pay attention next time.'
If all else fails, force them to do it on their own.

just as a matter of record >.> . . . has anyone here broken more then four PAIRS of mallets in a single season?

The BD put our front ensemble in the back of the field my senior year, cause the rest of the band kept taking time off us for some stupid reason. The first time he listened to the show with us in the back....he couldn't hear us [...go figure...-.- ] so he said to play out........
well....we played out!.......played the crap out of seven mallets!! [I had a marimba; brand new btw ^ ^v] I finally got dad to buy some more expensive ones halfway through the season [two competitions left -.-]. Mike Balter; Shadow Series; medium-hard......haven't broken yet ^ ^ and the percussion instructor had me use them for a four-mallet part in a perc ensemble [dancey dancey]
=^~^=

My band teacher always puts me on bells, no matter what, our vibes are okay, there not exactly new but they don't fall apart (thank god). Sometimes I get stuck playing vibes, but usualy we dont use them, sadly. Other than me only other person that uses them in my band is this other boy, Matt. but he still can't figure out where an A flat is on marimba (sad, I know). Once he asked me where G sharp/F Flat was :[

Anyone have people who just don't get it?

the vibes at my school suck even more.
we got a free set from a percussion teacher cause it sucked so bad.
if u step on the pedal, the string holding the vibes in place would come loose.also, the whole thing is wobbly so it sucks...yea

I hate playing mallets. I always had to in junior high because I was the only one who knew how to read music AND knew where all the note were.
