Idk if it needs to be that deep, I don't give them candy because it's nothing but junk that makes them hyper. xDD But that may be because of how I read that. I don't think the reason needs to be, "No, because-- haha, the world doesn't work like that, so whomp for you. = w =" though regardless, it's good for a child to be told no so they will later know how to accept loss, disappointment, etc, when they get to the real world. Nevertheless, they only get to be children without laws once.
xD Compared to what you just wrote I come off as a grumpy ol' windbag. But yeah, basically they should know they don't get something just because, and that if they work hard their efforts will be rewarded. Also, holidays are important because of the meaning behind them and that's why they get special things. In all honesty I will allow a kid to test the waters, after all I'm quite the mischievious man myself, but I'll also be the first one to bark at them if they try to press the line.
