Maximos laughed a thick and hearty laugh, filling Tomorrow's cup almost automatically before filling his own. He didnt immediately swallow the shot however, instead he looked at Tomorrow with the widest grin and said, "Fate, in my experience, gets bored what with so many people simply falling to its every wish and whim like good pawns. A little temptation is good for the soul."

He made a motion like he was going to drink, but then stopped, chuckling again. "Beside, I didnt choose this place."

Max made a gesture with the hand holding the shot to his two companions. "You two did, I simply followed. It would be rude of me to be late, and offer a change of venue. You know how I am when it comes to being rude."

The waitress scribbled down their orders in an accurate sort of rush, clearly scared, but more scared of getting it wrong. She went so far as to write the words 'Vegetarian' under Raven's meal and underline it four or five times while lipping the word to herself. And then she was gone. And Maximos himself was silent until Raven, made a rather stunning comment. The sunglasses, the hidden marks, he didnt expect her to say something like that! But now she had, he held up his glass and said. "That, I can drink to! To true selves and tempting fate!"

Regardless of who joined him in the toast, after a minute or so Max would knock back the clear liquid, wince a bit, shake his head and the finally find his bearings. His mismatched eyes would fall on Tomorrow, his grin dropping to an almost theatric frown, loosened by the alcohol.

"John." Max would say, in a serious tone belied by his face. "John what's wrong? You look so tense! Would you rather I give you two some more alone time? I mean - I entirely understand. Its not a problem at all!"

"No, stay." John murmured, looking down at his shot glass as the almost viscous liquid swirled around still from when Maximos had poured the shot. The large man sniffed violently, before taking the glass up and tossing the contents down his throat, only grimacing slightly as he placed the glass back down on the table.

All this talk of tempting fate...he couldn't take it anymore.

"I'm sorry," He whispered into Raven's ear as he bodily picked her up, as if she was as light as a feather, as if she was like a child, and placed her back onto her own seat. Whether the apology was for the bodily manhandling, or a pre-emptive act, was up for her to decide.

"Whats wrong..." John started, reaching out with his hand to place it over Maximos', gripping it tightly as he looked him right in the eye, like he was confessing a great sin to a lover. "...Is that I'm terrified of you. Even now, the dark in this very tavern frightens me. And its taking all my willpower not to...lose it and fry everybody in this tavern."

He closed his eyes and smiled a small smile, patting Maxi's hand as he continued speaking. "I must let you know, that for a long time, I actually lost my mind because of you. I thought i was a god, Max. A god. Can you imagine the level of self-deceit it took for me to believe that? My hubris was enormous, and all it took was your scythe to cut me back down to earth." His hand closed around Max's, and if Max bothered to notice, he would see that it was John's fake hand.

"But...you just don't walk away from an encounter like that...unscathed." John stated matter-of-fact-ly. "Losing my 'godhood', - John spat the word like it was poison in his mouth - "Resulted in a 'catrstrophic loss of self-worth, and 'shattered my ego' completely...at least that what you told me..."

He frowned at the last words even as they came out of his mouth, as if they weren't supposed to belong there - before a sudden giggle erupted from his belly, his right hand flying up to close his mouth, the fake left remaining on Maximos'. When he had composed himself - it only took a second - he continued. "....I lost myself in the woods for over two years....for two years, i had nothing but darkness as my friend....darkness as my companion. Darkness whispers into my ears at night, when i try to sleep....when i close my eyes, even for a moment....when i blink..."

His eyes had gone glassy, John Tomorrow leaving for a moment. "I dont know about you, but that type of thing changes a man. In order to deal with it, I had to go away. John, had to go away. Bye bye Farmer John....hello big bad wolf." He cocked his head to one side, narrowing his eyes for a moment, the thousand yard stare remaining. "...Do you know anything about farming?"

He hadnt expected that. He thought perhaps Tomorrow would brush off his tension, or down more drink. Instead, he was touching his hands. For just a moment, Maximos' eyes glanced past Tomorrow to Raven, with a quizzical expression. Was this her idea? Was this part of the promise he owed her from so long ago? But as he cued in on the tone of John's voice and how, what was being spoken, was not spoken with any sort of levity or humor, he gave the Tribal his absolute focus. Tomorrow was being serious.

Maximos knew there was fear, he could not say for sure that it was directed at him, but he could smell it. Fear changes a person, fear is the first step into the void. And while Max sensed it, he has refused to give it voice. Sometimes, fear is infectious, all it takes is someone to give it voice and it grows and spreads across a person and to other nearby people and makes for...

For the good of his friend, Maximos was trying to make things jovial and light. But the seriousness in this was as real as the Tribal's grip on his hand. Despite the tension, despite the emotion, despite the fervor of the moment, Maximos' hand never tightened, never tensed, it just rest loose and then tighter in Tomorrow's far larger hand. Maximos' eyes met John's and stood locked on the other man's. He took in every word, every gesture, and never pulled away. His facial expression did not change, but his eyes were open, deep and soft. He understood everything Tomorrow said, he accepted everything Tomorrow said. But above all else he wanted to show that it would change nothing of how he would interact with his friend.

He scared this man, that badly? At first he wanted to apologize. Then he wanted to ask about the darkness that surrounded the other man. He wanted to preach the beauty of accepting ones self, and the voices that teeter on the rim. He didnt do any of these things. It had taken this far into the night for John to open up Maximos dare not say a word and risk triggering that afore mentioned fear and causing his friend to clam up again. In every way, Max met Tomorrow's stare open, accepting, trusting, and defenseless. Not the dumb, and oblivious sort of look in which one does not see or accept possible danger, but the exact opposite. Maximos knew the threats, the risks, all of it. He knew electricity wielders were most dangerous at close range. He knew Tomorrow was perhaps the most deadly of that class he had ever faced, if not the most openly powerful. And yet, the only thing that was missing from the warm, friendly look in Maximos' eyes, was fear. There was not even a single drop.

And when Johnathan turned his explanation into a question, Maximos wanted to take the opportunity to say and ask everything he had yet to ask but instead, he very simply replied. "No, sir."

Rave's eyes met Maxi's for just a moment, her head shaking from side to side ever so slightly.. this was sooo not her idea!

The fear washing off him was almost overwhelming, making a small part of her wish that she had moved off his lap earlier. The animal part of Raven was wanting to run so bad that it took all her will not to bolt, but the rest of her.. that part that wasn't just animal anymore... it sat absolutely still, she could have been a statue sitting on his lap.

She couldn't do much beyond trying to exude a calming feeling, a sense of love and understanding... And there was one more thing she could do to help calm him down a bit. To keep the situation form going way overboard...

A soft glowing ball of light appeared in the rafters above the table, shining down on the three of them and slowly brightening, as if someone had turned on a pot light with a dimmer switch and they were slowly turning it up so as to not blind the denizens of the pub.

He was afraid of the darkness.. it was a different type of darkness that simple natural shadows, otherwise he likely would not have chosen this dark corner to begin with... but she couldn't do much beyond listen, and light up the room a bit more.

"Its all about harmony." John said seriously, his eyes growing manic as he grabbed the bottle of liquor and poured himself a shot, oblivious to his surroundings now, focusing solely on Maximos. "Harmony and hard work. Sweat. Toil. Sacrifice. Betrayal. Oh yes...betrayal." He narrowed his eyes at Maximos as he lifted the shot to his lips. "You wouldn't know anything about betrayal...would you?"

It was said with an accusatory tone, but when John pulled down the shot he laughed out loud, his eyes full of mirth as he placed the glass back down, keeping his hand on it. "Wait, don't answer that - of course you don't!"

His voice suddenly went deadly serious, almost deadpan. "You probably don't know the meaning of the word. Jim Tyler didn't know the meaning either. All that got him was...well. Betrayal. Every shade."

He blinked hard suddenly, lifting the empty glass to his forehead, pressing the glass against it as he frowned, confused. "What?"

He was rambling, but at least now he knew it. Where the hell was that damn food?

"Calm down, John, calm down..." He whispered to himself, clearing his throat before placing the glass down, filling it again. "Where was I? Oh yeah - Jim Tyler. Hell of a man. Reminded me of...who was it? The guy who...dad? Whatever, not important...he found me in a lower field, missing an arm and no memory of who i was or what i was doing there. He reckoned I had just 'fallen out of the sky like a bird or sump-thin', hehe...bleeding everywhere. Somehow i managed to seal up the majority of the vessels, but they'd torn open again at some point...don't quite know when...cant remember."

He took up his glass again, holding it up to look at Maximos through the dark contents, narrowing his eyes at the image staring at him impassively. "...Can't remember....anyways, Jim took me to a doc, who managed to patch me up somehow....couldn't do anything about the night terrors or my Nyctophobia...Kyran went through so many candles, all for me..." He chuckled sadly, a tear rolling down his cheek as he placed the glass to his lips - "...She was like that..." - then took the shot, placing the glass back down before speaking again.

"Jim was old-fashioned when it came to farming - he used the old tools, none of the new, big automated threshers and the such. He preferred a clydesdale, a pull-plow and time. He was a patient man. When the horse took ill, he didn't bat an eye - he looked right at me and pretty much ordered me to take the plow up. I'd only been baling hay and taking care of the animals the first month, waiting for my wounds to heal, but he could tell i had strength, even if i didn't have powers." He shook his head, a warm smile on his face. "I have never been more at peace in my life...nothing but an open field and soil to dig. It was damn hard, pulling that plow with one arm...just more scars to add to the pile..."

The tears were actually flowing now from both eyes as he looked down to the empty glass. "We...had worked hard all autumn, getting the ground ready for the spring plant. His family had been planting the seeds behind me the whole way...Kyran and little Emillie...the rains were coming down hard, giving the wheat a good beating....Jim took us to town, to celebrate...I didn't know..." He drew in a shuddering breath, the tears soaking into his beard. "Nobody farms in the old ways anymore....its all automated. Jim was in a large amount of debt....much more then he could handle. But...he just kept working the old way. I'd never find out why he didn't...upgrade. Evolve. Maybe it wasn't harmonious in how he wanted to live..."

"When we got to town, Jim had collectors waiting....Kyran had called them. She didn't want to live in poverty anymore, she pleaded with Jim to just leave their farm and go work for one of the other farms in the province...but the men they sent were impatient. They decided to collect then and there...and tried to take Emillie."

He clenched his teeth as he lifted his arm, pointing it towards Maximos, his fingers curled inwards like he was digging his fingers into someone's neck. "I had one around the neck when the other shot me. Put the gun to my head and pulled the trigger. Small caliber, nothing my body couldn't handle...but the shock made me black out. Only for a moment, only enough to make me panic....everything went black, and i saw...i saw...i saw something..."

He dropped his arm and leaned back into his chair, his body sunken, as if completely drained of stamina. "...My powers kicked back in, and in terror, i unleashed four months of pent up energy in less then ten seconds. When i...somehow managed to regain control, everybody was dead....the collectors....pedestrians on the street....animals in the gutter....little Emillie..."

He pressed his lips together and closed his eyes, holding his hand to them for a second - before opening them wide, looking to the light reflecting off the glasses around them. "...I could smell her before i saw her...she smelled.....like...."

He drew in a long breath before looking up to Maximos, his eyes unreadable. "....Sweet....roast....pork."

His whole body jolted with a sudden laugh. "Ha. Hahaha! Ahahahaha!" He leaned forward then, resting his elbows on the table as he placed his head in his hands, the tears dripping to the floor and mixing with the beer dregs as his laughter began to draw attention, patrons of the tavern looking to their corner as his body was wracked with laughter. The muscles in his arm began to tense and relax, his entire body spasming as a sudden jerk of electricity sparked off him, crawling over the floor and giving anybody with their feet on the slightly sodden floor a rude jolt.

As suddenly as his mania reared it's head, it was suppressed. His body calmed, but the muscles in his arm bulged as he gripped his hair, bodily forcing the beast back into it's cage. When he looked up, his eyes were red, and not just from the tears - they looked strained, like there was blood gushing through his head. His headache was becoming a migraine, and, somewhere in the mess that was his mind, he wondered if it would kill him.

"Is everybody okay?"

Too many emotions flying by too fast. Anger, love, hate, injustice, agression, fear, even longing. It all built up, so fast, too fast, faster than can be read or understood. Maximos would have loved to say that he foresaw that blast coming, but he didnt. And yet, when he should have been wincing about the rather unpleasant discharge, he was instead reacting.

"No." Maximos answered Tomorrow, hopping off the bar stool. He took no shots, he ignored the rumbling and grumbling crowd, the people playing with short-circuited electrical devices, and the others gasping or groaning. Somewhere near the outskirts of the facility, Maximos was almost entirely sure he heard someone yell for a doctor likely do to a shorted out pacemaker. He didnt care. They didnt matter.

There were three people in this room right now as far as he concerned. One who needed his full attention, the other who's help he drastically needed as he was most certainly no sort of healer in the emotional arts. Maximos looked Tomorrow dead in the eyes and said. "Everyone is not okay. You, are not okay."

He shook his head side to side as trying to work free a bad memory. Two pale hands rose and aimed to find Tomorrow's shoulders. What could he say? Could he argue for a lost little girl? A lost family? In truth his heart did not go out to them. The dead were dead, on and passed, their pain over and done for. What mattered were the living. He tried in the seconds in which his head shook to figure out how to word himself...but then he realized that the sentiment he was trying to express was not a thought, so much as a feeling. And then he closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and simply spoke what he felt.

"Listen to me John, she's gone. A carton of milk with its contents spilled. There is nothing you can do for any of them. This is not your fault, unless choose to do nothing about it." Maximos made sure to find and lock on to Tomorrow's eyes. He wanted the other man to see the truth in his expression, to feel what he felt as he spoke.

"This is a lie. Hiding yourself is only going to prove more costly than simply being who you were born to be." Maximos shook his head solemnly again. "Your not one of them John. You can pretend, you can act, you can lie to yourself as long as you want but sooner or later the truth of yourself comes out. From the moment you were born, you were destined to be exactly who you are, and nothing else."

Maximos bent his fingers so that instead of simply resting on his friends shoulders, he was squeezing them tightly, trying to dig the understanding into his flesh. "You may not be a god. You may be flawed, even weakened. But you will never be one of them. And the more you try, the more you suffer, the more you earn yourself anguish and pain. Pain, for simply being what you are. That isnt fair...that isnt right."

Maximos pulled his hands away, with a few quick motions of his left hand, he pulled up his right sleeve revealing an arm tattooed with black curls and twists, like wisps of smoke or licks of flame frozen in place in his skin. And yet, each tattooed mark was drawn over an uneven patch of skin. A burn and a tear scarred into his flesh. Visible clearly in Raven's patch of growing light. "The Shadowfather taught me much of betrayal and of truth, and of pain. And before his lesson, how many lives did I take John? You were there. You know the Destroyer, you saw him. How many? Before I realized the truth. You cannot hide from who you are. No more than a Lion can hide its fangs."

He gestured over to Raven. "No more than she can hide her feathers, or the black on her wings. We are who we are brother. And the more we try to hide it for them..." He swung his arm wide to the disgruntled crowd. "...the more they suffer."

Maximos was not as much of a teacher as he might have liked. He had explained this concept before, and had it explained to him. But did it work? He had, had a fair amount to drink. "Do...you understand?"

He looked past John to Raven with a look of abysmal hopelessness on his face. "Raven, please help me. I dont think I'm explaining this correctly. Talk to him, John listen to her."

And yet, not once did Maximos shy away from his friend or seem to judge him for what he had done.

"What makes you think it was an accident?" Her voice was quiet, almost too low to be heard over the din of the humans all around them.

She dipped her head, her bangs sliding over her eyes as she looked at her hands in her lap, her own tattoos flaring back to life on her skin so she could trace a red and black nail around the dark eye on the back of her left hand.

"We all tried to run away at one point or another, tried to forget what we are.. we thought dieing for our sins was the best we could do to make up for them." The outline of blood the seeped out around that eye made it almost seem to be crying under the glow of her wisp above them. "Running never solves anything, and dieing only leaves your sins to be taken up by another..."

"What makes you think Johnathan Tomorrow... that that little girl wasn't born just to punish you for trying to hide who you are?" Max had likely wanted her to sooth him, to play the calm loving motherly type that she was well known for... but that wasn't what this situation called for.

Morrow was wallowing in self pity, and just as the gun had woken him before, she planned to wake him with a slap here... at least an emotional slap.

"She died not because you were there, but to show you that you can not hide from what you are... to do so is an unforgivable sin." A thin line of blood slid down the side of her hand, Nocturne's dark eye shedding a single tear for that little girl even as his priestess wished that her soul would have a better life the next time the wheel of fate spun her about.

"She wasn't a carton of spilled milk!" John roared, smashing his fist into the table again, making the glasses and bottle jump and spill their contents. "There is no excuse for what I did! None!"

The light shining above him seemed to have helped his mania. The Now unfettered by the darkness surrounding him, the liqour giving him courage, he was able to speak clearly. "How can you sit there and tell me that this was supposed to happen? What kind of world is this where the death of a child is a lesson to be learned?" He looked down at his hands again, curling and un-curling his fingers, watching the static jump between his fingers. "You know whats really, truely bothering me? I cant remember her face anymore."

He narrowed his eyes, cocking his head to one side. "...What?"

There was silence, at first. Raven never seemed more a priestess of the Shadowfather than she did in that exact moment. And then John followed explosively and finally came the silence, Max's hand moved quickly the darkness to save his bottle of paint-thinner or whatever powerful vintage this might be. This was the sort of silence where one lets the words fall like so much debris after an explosion.

Maximos stood blinking, trying to pay Tomorrow the seriousness the moment was due. But...he failed utterly. His solemn face broke into a smile and then a laugh. It wasnt mocking laughter, but Maximos couldnt help but laugh either way. The laughs slowly broken by words, until Maximos was able to speak properly again. "Oh Tomm. Your either completely blind, or your finally seeing the world clearly."

"You dont remember her face because she was just one little girl." He shook his head, the server arrived with three platters but hesitated to actually put the food down. She was afraid of another shock, perhaps another slam...and that fire. "Humans measure their lives or the lives of their young as special, and unique because they feel themselves superior. But then we massacre dozens of potential youths at a time for the eggs in our breakfast."

"Your talking about Raven's people then you know. Birds, I mean, not chickens." He looked past Tomorrow with serious eyes so that she would honestly know he meant no offense and said, "I do know your not a chicken Raven. I promise."

And then he chuckled. Dark as the statement was, Max really did like his eggs. "What if, one short life ends, so that you can once again save thousands of lives? One for a thousand? Thats a fair trade isnt it?"

The waitress was unsettled it seemed, by the direction this conversation was turning. She set the three plates down, drinks, and a variety of sauces to compliment them and scurried away as fast as she could.
"We can help you John, we're your friends. But first you have to realize that the absolution and forgiveness your looking for isnt going to come from either of us. We dont see your supposed crime, and we accept you for who you are. The only real crime here, is that you dont do the same for yourself."

"What if it isnt fair? What if she died just because? Nature, Life, Death. They do not care. The most you can do is make the best of this. Learn from the experience or...fry the entire bar and everyone in it, ruining all their lives and families and so forth continuing a cycle." And then, as non-chalantly as could be, the Shadow gestured to Tomorrow's plate and said, "Either way, eat up, this looks delicious! Can you pass the salt please?"

Rae quickly slipped off 'Morrow's lap... to keep from wearing her silly drink. Smelling like a still was not on her list of fun things to do, after all!

She was sorry that she had to say the things she did.. she knew they were harsh words, and was quite proud of John for not going berserk over them... although she wouldn't have really blamed him if he had.

o.0 How the heck did Maxi even think that she would associate herself with barn yard animals... they were no kin of hers... these days they were so full of chemicals and gene altering drugs that they almost didn't count as animals anymore... so it was quite easy to shrug off his worry over insulting her!

"Her face does not matter... all that matters is that you learn from her death you big dumb lug!" Orange eyes narrowing dangerously. If they both got too drunk to figure things out she was going to have to wake them up a bit... "The Universe never does anything without a reason, and despite your self absorbed whining, the Universe doesn't do things just to torture you!"

The waitress arrived and Raven slid into an empty chair again, smiling sweetly at the girl before she scurried away again and Raven shot a glare at Max's words before turning it back to John the heat in her glare almost enough to burn. "Since I really dislike being electrocuted..." With a move as fast as a striking snake, she snatched up a convenient steak knife and stabbed it a good two inches into the table top in front of Tomorrow so that the blade and handle wobbled slightly with the violence of the move. "...slit your wrists instead and I will make certain that no one bothers you until you are quite past the point of saving... I can do that at least for an old friend who thinks he has nothing at all left worth living for!"

"What the hell is wrong with you two?" John muttered to Maximos as the woman placed the food down. "What difference would it make if she was human, kitsune, Tribal or alien? Would it make you feel better if I'd eaten her afterwards? Are they just cattle to you?!"

He let out a long sigh, listening as Raven said her piece with silence, before speaking up.

"You know what I've learned, um...uh..." He started, frowning slightly as he squinted at Raven, unable to find her name in his mind - before it suddenly popped in there. "...Raven? I've learned that because of my hubris, a child died. You cannot justify that, no matter what the Universe has in store for me, or how many I save afterwards. I have damned myself. End of story."

John shook his head. He was wasting his breath. This man and woman who sat before him didn't understand. To them, it was only us and them - haves and have-nots. Wolves and cattle. To them, the human race was just an inferior species, nothing to worry too much about. Did it matter that John had known them, that he had broken bread with them and heard stories from them and shared tears together?

No. It was just...spilled milk. In the past. Suck it up, soldier, move on.

How could he live a life where he could just get away with something like that? If he ever saw his children again, what right did he have to look them in the eye?

His head hurt. The splitting migraine had passed somewhat, but it still throbbed. His mania was being kept in check somehow. Good... He thought to himself. The last thing i need is to freak out right now...

Although...he looked up at the two of them, before looking down at the knife wobbling in front of him. Grasping it with his left, mechanical hand, he yanked it out of the table much like a person would pluck a weed from the ground - before slamming it into his right hand with a wet thunk, blood slowly seeping out of the bottom of the hand to begin to pool around his fingers and soak into the table, the blade buried up to the hilt into his hand, the knife's tip dripping blood onto the floor.

"I can only give you the one i have left. Is that enough?" John asked coldly, before picking up his steak burger with a steel hand and biting into it ravenously, his right hand sparking occasionally from the pain signals shooting up his arm. Disrturbingly, the pain in his hand was clearing the pain in his head, the two overlapping and almost cancelling each other out.

He shook his head as he chewed, frowning even as he swallow the food quickly. What the hell was he doing? At all? His memory was fried, his powers acting wild, his emotions all over the place - what the hell was wrong with him?

He thought he'd dealt with it all in the woods, alone by himself - no, by becoming the Beast, he had tried to run away from it. It was only when his mind returned to him did he begin to lose it once more - and by losing it, he had made peace with himself.

...Then why the guilt?

What the <********> was wrong with him?

"Would it matter if I said yes? Human isnt so bad if you cook it right. Your looking for judgement and punishment, we're clearly just monsters for not condeming you. Here I thought it would make you happy to be accepted by your friends." He laughed a small little chuckle of a thing that really carried no mirth and turned to his burger. That seemed to occupy the stately Shadow. What's wrong with you two? - The words burned in his head like a vicious brand. He loved Tomorrow as a friend and a brother, but he tell he wasnt getting anywhere. It was best to enjoy the moment before it fell to pieces. At the sound of steel and wood, Max took an immediate stern face, looking past Tomorrow at Raven with a deep from pulling down both sides of his face. He finished chewing a large bit of burger, swallowed a gulp of water and said. "Thats not fair Raven..."

He let out a long dramatic sigh. "You know damned good and well I would have said exactly that, but he might have run off terrified and blow up a farm girl and we wouldnt seem him for another few years."

Then he smelled it. Coppery and metallic, it had a certain tang ever predator knew. To be fair, he hadnt paid attention to what exactly happened with the knife only that a knife was involved. And now, his mismatched eyes locked on Tomorrow's hand, the steak knife, and the blood.

The cool, calm, and relaxed smile on Maximos' face was gone in a flash replace with something like seething anger, before that too was swallowed by stillness. Maximos' lips were a pale line across his face, his eyes were open and focused, and his right eye burned like a torch jammed into his skull spewing out white like flame.

"Enough." Maximos said in a voice cold enough to chill a drink if it were aimed that way. "Is this what you want?"

It really only took a passive gesture, it had been practiced so much. Maximos reached out his right hand and grabbed at the air, the shadows swirled in arms and tendrils and formed the object he was grabbing for even as he completed his grip. A jet black long sword, shining like polished obsidian. It was a sword just like this that took that other arm. Maximos' eyes sought out and would then refused to leave Tomorrow. "Is this what you came back for? So we, no...so I could judge you, and give you absolution for your sins? I LET you go Johnathan, I could have taken you right then, and she --"

Maximos gestured with his free hand straight at Raven. "-- would have been powerless to stop me. Will that make you happy? Let someone off you so you dont have to feel bad? Do you think I want to kill you? Do you think I deserve that pain? Do you think she deserves to mourn you? Do you think thats the image I want to be seen as, to one of my best friends?! Did you even think of anyone else at all?"

Maximos face twisted in a deep frown. "Of course not. You dont even care about that little girl, just what you did to her and what that makes you. Your not here for us."

The Shadow spat the word, flicking the sword out to his side, spraying excess black like paint. "Your here for yourself. You dont want her or me."

"You want your big scary boogieman. Right? Then here." The sword moved in a blur, flipping once and stabbing straight down into the ground in front of Maximos. "Take it. Live out your little fantasy."

And with that, Maximos turned and began walking off through the startled crowd, victims of shock, then bloodshed, now sudden shadow magic and swords, and towards the door. He tried his best to help, but it wasnt enough. It was never going to be enough. Tomorrow would judge him a fiend and a terror before taking his help. He didnt need anyones judgements. He didnt look back, he just called over his shoulder and said, "If you want a friend, you know where to find me. Goodnight Raven."

And with that, Maximos left, fully aware no one was going to follow him. He had alot of issues to settle with Tomorrow, alot of sins to make ammends for...but for so long as he was the damned Shadowbourne Devil of Tomorrow's nightmares, he hadnt a chance. Maybe it was the alcohol talking, and walking but it just hurt too much to stay.

Raven rolled her eyes as the knife bit into flesh, that was just childish... she had given him the chance to end his suffering and instead he chose to enhance it even more!

There was obviously no way to console him at the moment.

"Thats not fair Raven..."

He let out a long dramatic sigh. "You know damned good and well I would have said exactly that, but he might have run off terrified and blow up a farm girl and we wouldnt seem him for another few years."

"I know... but sometimes when I say things people get distracted, and the words manage to come out less dramatically.. I think it has something to do with my breasts, but I'm not sure why.." xp It was either that, or they just ignored her... she liked to pretend it was the first, it hurt a lot less that way.

Then Max drew a sword, a blade that made her knives look like smoke and water, and yet again she reminded herself that she really wanted to be able to do that some day... but his words were full of pain and anger, and they were directed at all three of them, not just Tomorrow... for the echo of loneliness came from the shadow, while she felt again the fear of how truly powerless she could be despite all the powers she collected... and the self pity was still washing off Tomorrow in waves!

He didnt look back, he just called over his shoulder and said, "If you want a friend, you know where to find me. Goodnight Raven."

And with that, Maximos left, fully aware no one was going to follow him.

... but he was wrong, because the little lady, all decked out in shadows and blood wrapped her arms around him from behind before he could take more than a few steps, pressing her cheek into his back as she hugged him. "You know the reason why I love you Maxi? It is because whenever I need a friend.. I haven't had to look for you, you have always just been there for me.. Thank you..."

John's eyes were filled with fear as Maximos brandished the weapon, at first trying to stand to escape the shadow-man, but finding himself pinned to the table by his own hand, wincing and groaning in pain as he yanked on it accidentally. Sweat began to bead on his brow as his eyes flitted from the tip of the blade to the shadow-man's eyes, before heaving a sigh of releif as Max stabbed the sword into the ground and walked away.

Maximos
"Take it. Live out your little fantasy."

Then he was gone, Raven quick to follow. The crowd swallowed them, and John was alone once more.

He didn't know what to do, at first. He felt lost all over again - normalicy ripped away, with no-one to blame but himself. His eyes welling with tears, he looked down at the knife in his hand, and gripping it tightly by the hilt, yanked it out with a grunt, placing it back onto the table before reaching behind him to pull out his bandanna, wrapping it around the wound to staunch the bleeding.

He heaved a heavy sigh, looking down at the food before him situated before two empty seats.

"...I dont know what i want..." He whispered to no-one, cradling his injured hand in his lap. "...I'm in trouble...my memory, my senses, are all screwed up... all I know is, this family took me in and cared for me...." He placed his metallic hand on his face, covering his tears. "I didn't mean to....for gods sakes, I didn't mean to....and I know i cant take it back, i know there's nothing i can do, but for gods sakes, that doesnt make the pain go away....losing myself didn't make the pain go away....nothing will make the pain go away."

He looked over to the obsidion sword, jutting lewdly from the ground, an offront to everything normal in this world. He gritted his teeth throgh the tears, before fear made him tear his eyes away from it. "...And that definately wont make it go away."

He had tried...death. But...it had not agreed with him. Time and time again, he would find himself clawing his way back to health. Poison had not worked. Cutting had not worked. He'd even tried hanging - but that hadn't worked either. He had eventually realised that he would have to live with it, live with the pain and shame of himself.

He had tried to relay that to Raven and Max.

He didn't want them to accept nor condemn him. He wanted them to understand. Understand that these had been people who had accepted him as family. He had broken bread with them, shared pain and fear with them, laughed and cried with them. He hadn't remembered anything about himself before landing in Tyler's field - to him, the Tyler's were his family. And with no warning, no heed whatsoever, he had destroyed them. He wanted to explain to Max and Raven that he had killed his family.

But he had failed. He hadn't justified the gravity of Emillie 's life. He'd bathed her, fed her, made her laugh. She wasn't just a stranger. None of the Tylers had just been strangers. They had been all he knew.

So he sat, drunkenly sobbing into his hand, pitifully wishing he had never come back. All it had done was rip open wounds that had never truely healed, and made fresh ones once more.

He smashed his right fist into the table, blood splattering underneath. "What did she look like?!" He cried suddenly, his frustration beginning to mount within his pitiful sorrow. "Damn the gods and their ways!" He placed his hand onto his forehead, smearing blood into his hair and face as he looked at the slab of meat before him, as if it held the answers. "....What was his name...what was the boy's name?!"

Why couldn't he remember?!

He was breathing heavily now, and through the pounding headache that was assaulting him, he had a sudden shot of deja-vu -

***Running through the woods at night, tearing his clothes off as his body burned, heating up like it was made of white-hot fire...gripping his shaved head, tearing the padded gauze away to cause the stiched hole to rupture, blood spilling onto his shoulder....he writhed on the ground, groaning and shreiking, screaming questions out to the heavens. Who was...? Why couldnt...? How did...? These questions tore at him, made him slaver and foam as he pounded his fists into the ground, causing the earth to tremble as the maddness took hold, causing him to throw these questions away and roar his frustrations into the night, into the inky blackness, where monsters and death lived...***

- And then he was back, his head screaming in agony, his hand dripping blood on the floor from where he was gripping the table with white-knuckled fury, the other hand gripping it so hard the wood had splintered, and he was breathing hysterical gasps and there were people surrounding him, and he didn't know what to do.

"This guy is freaking out!"

"Someone call a doctor, i think he's having a seizure!"

"Stay back, he looks deranged!"

"Jeez, he's bleeding all over the place - someone call the cops!"

This wasn't going well.
