Taking the seat beside Iorlas, Lin waited for Earendil to sit down before turning to talk.
"I'm sorry for worrying you like that," she began.

Iorlas shook her head at Lin. "No, don't worry. It wasn't your fault. I mean, I didn't exactly give you a chance to explain anything either. I was jumping to conclusions."
She tilted her head curiously. "So ... what is it?"

"Well, I do want to talk to you about Dareon, since it seems you've been avoiding each other," Lin ventured.
Well, she knew Dareon wasn't, but it was hard to start something like this, especially when you knew things were not alright between them.

Iorlas blinked at Lin, then looked down. "Ah." She folded her hands together, then unclasped them, and then folded them together again.
Earendil watched her in silence for a moment, and the way she was taking so long to answer rubbed him the wrong way. Normally he was a patient man, but this was his brother they were talking about.
"That's it?" he asked her, angry now. "'Ah'? That's all you've got to say?"
Iorlas didn't look up and didn't respond.

"Earendil," Lin spoke his name firmly as she put a hand o his arm.
She understood he was upset, but this obviously wasn't easy for Iorlas neither (she was obviously worried about Dareon).
"Iorlas, what is the matter, the two of you haven't talked since that incident, and you both been... kind of lost since then."

Earendil clenched his jaw, but he didn't say anything. He wanted this to work out for his brother - but he was aghast at how little Iorlas was reacting.
Iorlas looked away, her fists clenching and unclenching, and after a moment she looked back at Lin. Her eyes were red and wet.
"Do you think this is easy for me?" she demanded, switching to the Ancient Tongue, a language that she knew they would understand but that no one around them would. "You think I'm enjoying this? That I'm doing this by choice?"

"No, but I'd like to know why you think this is required," Lin replied in turn quietly, "Because this isn't helping neither."
She was pretty sure it had to do with Iorlas' sister, but wouldn't say anything until Iorlas did first.

"I'd like to know why you think anything could come of this," Iorlas replied sharply. "Come on, you know what I am. I'm not elf-kind. I'm not even human, which would be one thing. But I'm not even like a human!"
"And treating him like he doesn't exist is the answer?" Earendil demanded. "He's not exactly holding together well, in case you hadn't noticed."

Lin was pretty sure the like a human part was aimed at her, she wasn't elven or human really. Though having Earendil be angry wasn't helping things neither.
"Earendil please," Lin spoke again, "Not everyone sees things the way you do. That being said, you're talking to the wrong person Iorlas pulling out that argument. I'm Gaian, I don't give a damn that you're not elf-kind or not even like a human. You're a person, true... not normally a bipedal person, but you are a person, and really Dareon is so far gone in how much he loves you, he wouldn't give a damn neither."

Iorlas stared at Lin in stunned disbelief. "You don't get it, do you?" she asked her incredulously. "You really don't. Lin, I am not a person. I may look like one, I may look elven, I may look like every other person in every town we've seen ... but I'm not. I can't change what I really am. No one can! The woman may have changed how I look, but that doesn't mean I'm not a dragon. Even I can't think of myself in any other way."
She buried her face in her hands. "And it's getting harder to stay this way."

Lin took a deep breath and looked at Iorlas, "Iorlas, I'm Gaian, I have a different definition of "person" than you do."
She decided to skip it, Gaians were just strange people and she understood that some dragons weren't like Iorlas and some in Gaia were even kept as pets, but she wasn't going to get into that.
"At the very least though, if that's the way you feel, you owe Dareon an explanation. It is just as hard on him as it is on you, but the thing about Dareon though, is he doesn't even know what the problem is. He knows that you feel that the difference between you two is great, but we have respected your secret and not told anyone else."
Lin ran her hand through her hair, and wondered absently what would have happened to Earendil if she had not loved him in return. Frankly, she didn't want to think about that, while elves did remarry it was rare and only after the death of the previous love, she knew that much.
"You're right, I don't get it, but I'm a foreigner to this world and there are days I really don't get people here at all, but I know this much. Even if you don't tell him, at least tell him you can't fall in love with him, because it's not fair to leave Dareon hanging like this."

"But that's the problem," Iorlas shot back. "I do love him. At - at least I think that's what this is. So what can I tell him? That I return his affection but it can never be? It would kill him, even more than what I am doing now. I can't stand to see him like this either, but what other choice do I have?"
"You could face up to the truth," Earendil told her flatly. "Admit to him, as Lin said, why you believe it wouldn't work. Because what you're saying right now - what I'm hearing coming from your mouth - is that you would rather see him suffer this torment without knowing why than admit your secret to him."
He glared at her. "You're a coward. You claim to care for him, but you're thinking more of yourself than him."
"What could possibly be gained from him knowing the truth?" Iorlas asked him.
"You owe him the truth!" Earendil shouted at her. "Can't you see you're killing him? Have some faith in him! At the very least, give him the truth and let him decide for himself if he can handle it!"

"Earendil! Stop please, this is just as hard for her, you should know what it is like to live in doubt," Lin spoke to her husband sharply.
It was perhaps a low blow on her part, but she knew feelings were a delicate matter, even if it was Dareon they were talking about here.
"Iorlas, Dareon didn't fall in love with you because you are an elf anymore than Earendil did for me being an angel," Lin told her quietly, "When elves fall, they fall hard. He's in love with you, and even if he has trouble wrapping his head around the fact you're a dragon, he'll still love you, that's just the way it is."
And if he didn't well, then Dareon wasn't as in love as he thought, which she knew wasn't the truth.

Earendil had to bite his tongue to keep from retorting to Lin, but he knew it wouldn't help. He knew what Daeron was doing through, that was what he knew it was like. He was angry with Iorlas for the way she was treating him. At least in his own case, Lin had genuinely not known a thing, but Iorlas not only knew but returned Daeron's feelings, which gave her doubly no excuse to treat him like she was.
Iorlas herself was angry, though admittedly not at either of them. "Perhaps he will," she replied to Lin, "but he should not, as I should not love him. If I were doomed to remain in this form forever, that might be one thing, but I am not. And it is becoming harder for me to stay in this form, particularly because of this. If I change, I cannot change back again. It would be irreversible. Even if he still loved me, what could possibly come of it then? What possible good could it do?"

"Now you're making excuses," Lin told her plainly, "I'm not asking you two to pursue a relationship if you feel you cannot, I am asking you to tell Dareon why you're doing what you're doing, because he has no clue why you're doing what you're doing and that hurts him more than if he knew."
At this point, Lin figured one at a time, and as much as she hated to admit it, the two couldn't have a relationship if Iorlas was dead certain her being a dragon would cause problems.
"Right now, you're leaving him hanging Iorlas, which is doing nothing but making him more aggravated by the day, confused and half thinking he's crazy because he had to get confirmation that you are avoiding him and he's not just well... going crazy imagining that you are. I don't know what you think you're accomplishing by avoiding this, but most certainly doing more harm than good."
