Toby's lip twisted and he nodded. Wood elves didn't have much magic to protect themselves with.
Dari grinned when he saw the look on Maia's face and took her hand. The fae liked curious and friendly people. They liked love.
The boys also ignored the wisp.
Then they came upon it. There was a clearing, paved with stones like something out of Lord of the Rings. A tall, slender and odd-faced Elven person sat on a chair of stone grown straight from the earth. To their left, a sprite of the sort Lori was wary, and to their right was a nymph with branches green with leaves growing back out of her head. The Seelie, the Unseelie, and the nature-based. Then there was an Elven man in armor, although his age was indeterminable, and a small group of tiny fairies and a hardly gnome.
Toby and Dari both took a knee before the council and bowed their heads.

Maia followed suit, kneeling before the council. What would happen, now? She loved seeing the variety of fairies, she'd never seen so many. They didn't stay at HQ long, when they did come.

When they stood, Dari addressed the council in Gaelic, giving his usual greeting. Not everyone in their presence spoke much English. That made Maia even more useful.
"Who is this?" the elven person asked.
"This is Maia," Dari said back in Gaelic, "She's a new ambassador at the Bureau."
"Fae?" they asked.
Dari nodded. "Selkie."
"Ah." And Maia got a smile.
A fairy left their smaller table atop the table and went to greet Maia. It placed its tiny hand on Maia's and smiled. Its voice would never carry all the way to the selkie's ears, so it didn't try. That was the only bad thing about the size difference.

Maia smiled at the elven person, greeting him in Gaelic. She was even more delighted when the tiny fairy came over to greet her. "Hello," she greeted, in Gaelic. She turned her attention to the elven person.
"We've come to see if there's anything we might be able to do for you," Maia began. "Problems we might address? Do you need anything?"

The group shared glances before the nymph spoke. Dari translated for Toby.
"We have had no humans lately, but some of our beacons are beginning to fail."
Toby nodded and Dari did the same sort of translation for the council.
"We've come with several beacons, we thought it might be time to replace," Toby said, "We'll take away the old ones and have them recycled."
Nods came from around the table.
"War-wise, are we alright?" Toby asked.
The Elven man nodded. "We're still in a state of peace, I'm happy to say."
"Good, good."

"This place is stunning," Maia said; the boys had the questioning pretty well handled, it sounded like the forest was safe still, and no major issues. Good! "I've never seen anywhere like it." She looked towards the council and smiled. This was going well.

Of course the boys hadn't actually expected Maia to do much business-wise. She had wanted to see Breyer, and now she legally could. They had got her here, and in catching the council at a good time they had come at a good time for her to explore.
"Thank you," the elven person said with a smile, "There are few places like it any more, unfortunately."
"Would you mind if we showed her around a little?" Toby asked, "Once we're finished here, of course. She grew up alone, on a human beach. She had only met a kelpie before she came to us."
"Absolutely!" the nymph chimed, this time in heavily-accented English, "We'll send your a tour guide for all...um. All of your help."

Maia was positively beaming. She looked to Toby. A tour through the forest? "Thank you so much," she said, in Gaelic, looking to the nymph. She'd wanted to see it, and now she could, without getting lost.

The meeting continued for some time, delving into the levels of magic, the fairness between the races, population growth, and particular people until everyone was finally satisfied. Finally names were shared throughout the council with Maia, hands were shook amongst other, odder greetings everyone seemed delighted that Maia knew, and then the nymph led the group to a woman she introduced as her 'friend.' She was an attractive elf with short-cut brunette hair.
"I'm Miwil," the woman said, and offered her hand to each in turn. To her, the council's meetings were mysterious events meant for higher-ups. Even Toby had never met her. Their eyes lingered together a moment before they moved on.
"So, what is it you'd like to see?" she asked in accented, but pristine English.

Maia was delighted to finally be able to put names to faces. She shook hands She smiled at the nymph as she led them to an elf. "Hi Miwil, I'm Maia," And her English was excellent. "I've never been here before," she admitted, "Show me some of your favorite spots?"

"Sure!" Miwil said happily and started off into the wood. Birds sang this deep in the wood and strange creatures clung to the trees. People of all shapes and sizes wandered around, and Miwil brought the group just a little ways back. She pointed to the treetops and to the complex network of treehouses and suspended bridges there. People lived up there actively. A child's feet hung off the edge of one platform.
"This is just one of our little communities. Fae elves traditionally live in raths, but my clan's sort of moved up and out." She waved to the child who giggled and waved back.

Like the elves in books. Maia smiled and looked up. "Its lovely," she said, giving Miwil a smile. What was living in a tree like? She couldn't imagine. She took Toby's hand.

"Hmm, where next...?" Miwil mused, and then turned and gestured for the group to follow. "Every race has their area. It's not official or anything and we always have cross-crossing, but people tend to stay around their people. I couldn't tell you how many acres we have here. A lot. You're fae, right?" She turned to Maia when she asked that.
Toby nodded.

That made sense. Was that how they'd kept the peace? Toby had mentioned wars. She was glad they'd come at a peaceful time.
"Selkie," Maia said, by way of explanation. She smiled at Miwil.

Miwil smiled and nodded. "Came to work for the Bureau after they found you, huh? I thought about it, but I don't think I could give up all the green for Arizona. I went for classes a while back, though."
"Oh, so you know Lori," Dari said.
"Yup! Good guy. Did he come too?"
"He did, but on other matters."
"Ah, s'a shame."
They continued walking and making small talk until they reached a pond ringed with trees. It was long and deep.
"Don't lean over too far," Miwil warned, "They might jump out and n** ya."
Under the water swam a profusion of critters from the average fish to little mer-imps and on a rock at one end a trio of naked ladies were singing. Sirens? Nymphs? Who knew? Miwil didn't pay them any mind.
