"New words?" Miyuki asked.

Of course she hadn't been there when her mother had asked her ada to teach her little brother a bit of Common Tongue.

"What kind of words?"

Lin nodded, that was true, though she found it curious that Leyenda had been ill. She couldn't help but wonder...

"It's good that you're feeling better though."

She wanted to ask though, if they knew why Leyenda had been feeling off.

Andarien nodded excitedly, his head bobbing up and down. "Yes!" he beamed. "Like -"

He opened his mouth wide to tell her the new words he had learned, but the moment he tried to say one, his mind went blank. He blinked, his mouth still wide, and blinked again. And again. Then he snapped his mouth closed and stared at her. "Uhh ... I forget," he said sheepishly, his face turning red.

Leyenda smiled at Lin. "Thanks. How about you guys? I heard something about you found Alassëa's family?"

Kelirahc blinked at her. "Really? She did not seem very happy when I saw her."

"You saw her?" Leyenda asked him curiously.

Kelirahc nodded. "She was with Aethos. She seemed upset, but Aethos was as calm as he always is when they are together."

"That's okay, it's in a different language?" Miyuki asked.

Chances were, she probably knew it, even if she only knew three languages. She wanted to learn high elven next because apparently that was important.

"It seems.... that Alassea's father had remarried and has young children now. Her step family was in shock and not as happy as her father at the news," Lin admitted, "Mainly they were very surprised, and of course the children have a hard time understanding why their father had a child before them with someone else."

Andarien shrugged one shoulder. He wasn't entirely sure what languages were yet, all he knew was that they were different ways of saying things he already knew how to say.

"But it was words to build with my blocks," he told her in a matter-of-fact tone of voice. "Just different from what we normally use."

"Ah," Leyenda murmured. "Half siblings. I can see how that would be a shock ... on both sides. I hope things work out for them all."

"Surely his wife would understand, though, yes?" Kelirahc asked, puzzled. "The people here would know that he had been married before, would his wife be surprised as well?"

Earendil smiled sadly. "Well, considering she thought that Alassëa was dead for so long ... it's understandable that she might feel threatened by her return, I suppose. After all, it's a reminder to her that she is not her husband's first wife, and that there was another that he loved just as much as her."

Miyuki tried to think, it probably wasn't Japanese if her ada was teaching it because ada was learning just as much as she was. Even if it seemed easier to Miyuki.

"Blocks?" she said in common tongue.

"That's probably the biggest issue, and of course for most children, they normally have time while their mother is pregnant to get use to the idea of another sibling," Lin paused, "So I'm told, not that I would know."

For some reason they really lacked sibling rivalry in her home.

Andarien's eyes lit up brightly, and he nodded vehemently. "Yeah! Blocks!" he exclaimed. "And up and high ... and oops!"

He giggled. "Ada likes to say oops. He knocks the towers down a lot."

Leyenda laughed. "Yes, Mother told me how unusual your family is compared to those of our world." She quieted then, her expression turning thoughtful. "Still ... I think it's different when it's half siblings instead of full siblings. To have a different mother ... and if you grow up without knowing about those sorts of things ... that would make it more surprising. I don't know, maybe it's just me."

"Do not ask me," Kelirahc spoke up, holding up one black hand to ward off any questions that might be directed at him. "I have no siblings of my own, let alone half siblings."

Miyuki giggled, she didn't know exactly how they were building but she would take Andarien's word for it.

"Sounds like fun. That's Common Tongue, it's what grandmother and grandfather back in Gaia speak."

Well they spoke other languages but she figured for Andarien he could learn it later.

Lin shrugged, she knew it happened but she didn't know anyone personally who it happened to.

"I can't say, most of us weren't even considered young children mentally so it's kind of hard to imagine."

She supposed Miyuki and Andarien were the closest thing to young children she had come into contact with.

Andarien blinked at Miyuki. "It's a tongue?" he asked her, confused. "Like this one?"

He opened his mouth and pointed at his tongue to show her what she meant.

Earendil smiled at Lin. "Well, your family is quite different from what we're used to here," he teased her. He turned to Leyenda and Kelirahc. "On that note, however, we were hoping that you wouldn't mind watching Andarien for us for a while."

Leyenda grinned at him. "Not at all. Off to see the sights?"

Miyuki giggled at that and shook her head, "Tongue can also be a term for a language. Here, they call it Common Tongue, because it is a language that all races can learn to understand each other. So instead of learning a lot of different languages, you only learn one, but not everyone knows Common Tongue. In Gaia, they call it English."

He always took things so literal it was kind of funny and cute.

"Well..."
Lin didn't like to tell a lie, "Not really, we saw earlier, but Earendil and I would like to talk to Iorlas in private..."

And they didn't want Andarien eavesdropping.
PostPosted: Wed Oct 05, 2011 9:53 pm

"Oh." Andarien blinked at Miyuki thoughtfully. "But what language does everyone know that we don't have to learn more?" He blinked again. "But we all know this one so why do we have to learn more?"

Leyenda nodded knowingly. "I understand," she said solemnly. "Things haven't been right between her and Daeron since Chansond'eau."

She didn't bring up Ioreth, though everyone knew that had been the breaking point for the (possibly) blossoming couple.

"There isn't one, most people don't bother to know more than the language they grew up with, but not everyone knows this one we're using," Miyuki looked over at Kelirahc.

"Kelirahc doesn't know Common Elvish, he only speaks Common Tongue and a very old language called Ancient Tongue. Ada comes from the Southland so they speak High Elven there most of the time, and in Gaia nearly everyone speaks Common Tongue," she paused, "There's also Human Tongue, but you don't remember when we went through the Human Southland because you were too little. There's also Japanese, that's the language Grandmother's mother grew up with and Chinese is what grandfather grew up with. I don't know all of those, I only know Common Tongue, Japanese, Common Elvish and my Ancient Tongue is really really rusty, I would have to practice that again."

She only learned it for a small while after all and didn't have to use it since her last visit to Nauros.

"No, it hasn't and I said I would talk to Iorlas," Lin admitted, "Dareon was pretty much moping at the inn, though he's gone for a walk now."

He seemed physically old from all of that.

Andarien was in awe. "Those are all tongues?" he asked her, amazed. "That's a lot!"

He stared at her, suddenly realizing something. "Hey ... does that mean I'm gonna have to learn them, too?"

He wasn't sure he liked that idea - it was hard to remember even just a few words, how could he learn new words for everything?!

Earendil wasn't sure that moping was the tight word for what Daeron was doing: as strong a word as it was, he was sure it wasn't strong enough. If anything, he was probably pining, though to be honest he wouldn't be surprised if his brother was fading.

Leyenda and Kelirahc smiled at Lin. "You go," Leyenda told them. "We'll watch Andarien for you, don't worry."

Miyuki didn't seen the problem with that, but she had stayed in one place for a good few years, so she had the chance to learn the basics of learning a language. She also disliked having to not understand what people said around her.

"Only the ones that we need,"
she finally replied, "We don't need all of them."

"Thank you," Lin murmured before taking Earendil's hand again.

"Good," Andarien said decisively. "Because it's hard."

"Miyuki!" River called from where she was still playing with the other children. "Are you coming back or what?"

She was sweating, and sweat plastered her stray hair to her face. She had clearly been doing a lot of running.

Earendil squeezed Lin's hand lightly. "Off we go then?" he asked her.

He wondered where Iorlas would be now - when they'd seen her before, she had seemed to be wandering randomly.

"Off we go, good thing this village isn't that big."

She led the way, not sure where Iorlas would be, but hoped that if they wandered enough they'll run into others of their party to ask or maybe even Iorlas herself.

Miyuki looked over her shoulder and then back again, noting that her parents were going off without Andarien. It probably meant they wanted some time alone, but Andarien really was too little to play capture the flag.

"I'm staying with Andarien!" Miyuki called back.
