Student Name: Kean
Stage: Freshling

Response: For his element, Kean had picked Iodine. It was a weird one to pick for a little Freshling like himself, but he had wanted to do something a bit different, and well, here he was. Sure, he had to look up what Iodine was and what it was used in, but at least it sounded… interesting? Kean wasn't so science minded, he was a lot like his sister, more interested in the arts than in understanding what was around them.

So, when it was his turn to talk about it, he just told them what he knew about it. "My element is Iodine. It is the heaviest of the stable halogens. It's essential in the synthesis" he stumbled a bit here, words like synthesis were still a bit hard for him to pronounce, "of thy-roid hor-mones." Yeah, he wasn't the best speaker, but at least he was trying! "It can be used to help treat thyroid cancer." He wasn't sure what a thyroid was, or cancer, but that's what it had said! "It's also used as a dis-in-fect-ant!" And that's all he had on it. It's not like they were giving huge presentations anyway, they just had to tell a little about their elment and it seemed the teacher would be fine with it.

Student Name: Talia
Stage: Freshling

Response: Talia was a bit worried about presenting her element. She was already extremely shy talking in front of others she wasn't close with when she had to do it to the class? She felt like she was going to burst out crying! She didn't think her element was embarrassing or anything, just that she would have much preferred writing it on a piece of paper rather than having to tell others about it. She swallowed the lump that had gone into her throat, and tried to talk about her element as fast as possible while also being able to be understood.

"My element is Samarium, which oxidizes in air. It's mostly used in magnets and also a component in the drug that kills cancer cells." There, she was done. She went back to trying to blend in with her seat, hoping that no one would make fun of her.

Response: Lalita slyly wipes a booger under her desk before she starts reading off her paper. “My element is Aluminum. It’s number 13 on the periodic table. It is a silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic, ductile metal. Ductility is especially important in metalworking, as materials that crack, break or shatter under stress cannot be manipulated using metal-forming processes such as hammering, rolling, and drawing. It is the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicon and the most abundant metal in the crust.” Her mom had helped her with most of her paper, so some of the bigger words were hard for her to understand at first until mom helped explain them to her.

Student Name: Georgette
Stage: Junior

Response: Georgette had gotten the element Iridium. He cleared his throat, then started reading his paper. “Iridium is number 77 on the periodic table. It is the second densest element. It is a member of the platinum group of metals. Iridium is white, resembling platinum, but with a slight yellowish cast. Because of its hardness, brittleness, and very high melting point, solid iridium is difficult to machine, form, or work; thus powder metallurgy is commonly employed instead. It is the only metal to maintain good mechanical properties in air at temperatures above 1,600 °C. It is also the most corrosion-resistant metal, even at temperatures as high as 2000 °C. Iridium is one of the rarest elements in the world’s crust, with annual production and consumption of only three tonnes. ” Georgette nodded to himself in satisfaction. He always liked reporting facts, and this project from the teacher was very interesting to him.

#36....krypton. Wait, that was a real element? Wow, it was. A little bit if rather interesting research later and Yaruka had what she needed. All that was left was to present it and not mess it up. "Krypton is a rare gaseous element that is odorless, colorless and chemically inert. It is characterized by brilliant green and orange spectral lines, which can be easily produced and sometimes very sharp. While it's considered one of the rarest gases in the atmosphere, about 15 tons of it exist and circulate the planet and 8 tons are extracted each year through a liquid air process so that it can be used in various electronic equipment and in electric lamp bulbs when mixed with argon. It's also used in photographic projection lamps and other high-powered electrical equipment because of its extremely fast response to electrical currents. A mixture of stable and unstable isotopes called 'kripron-85' is used to detect leaks in sealed radioactive material containers and, in medical practice, is used to detect abnormal openings in the heart."

Charlemagne was assigned the element Platinum, and after a quick read from his textbook he was all set to write his assignment.
"Platinum is a shiny, silvery-white metal as resistant to corrosion as gold. It is used extensively in jewelry and is non-toxic. Platinum as a metal speaks of prestige, value, and power. An album has gone platinum, platinum wedding anniversaries, and highly prized platinum jewelry such as rings and expensive watches."

"Antimony is a semi-metal. In its metallic form, it is silvery, hard and brittle. Antimony is used in the electronics industry to make some semiconductor devices, such as infrared detectors and diodes. Antimony compounds are used to make flame-retardant materials, paints, enamels, glass and pottery. Antimony and many of its compounds are toxic."

Stage: Freshling

Response:
School was always exhausting. Mostly because of all the work and nice socializing that you had to pull off. However as long as it was somewhat of a challenge Acheron truly didn’t mind it as much as he griped, because life was hard enough and it was best to arm yourself. Better to be smart and strong. So even though he wasn’t too happy about speaking in glass he got to it. Lets see he had been given element 16 which would be… sulfur.

"Sulfur is a naturally occurring metal that is often found in volcanic areas. It is used for the vulcanization of black rubber, in fungicides and in black gun powder. Sulfur normally appears as yellow crystals or powder. For centuries, sulfur along with mercury and salt, was believed to be a component of all metals and formed the basis of alchemy whereby one metal could be transmuted into another. "

There that should be a good small report right?

Response:
Science always seemed fun to Orphe, you got to learn how things to work and sometimes you got to set things on fire and who didn’t like safely lighting things on fire or making booms. However eventually you got to the more dry parts which was reports, especially speaking reports. Orphe didn’t mind too much after all you needed to know the chemicals you were working with when you went to cause a reaction after all but ugh he hated public speaking.
"Atomic number 22 belongs to the element titanium. Titanium is a hard, strong, and shiny metal. It is used in joint replacements, especially hip joints and tooth implants. It can also be used as a alloying agent with many metals including aluminium, molybdenum and iron. Titanium is the ninth most abundant element on Earth and was discovered in 1791 by Reverend William Gregor"
There a nice little report. Orphe quickly went to sit down again.

Response:
Muninn always hated speaking in front of people. When he was younger everything was in third person, although he wouldn’t be actually talking about himself it was still the fear lying in the back of his mind that the students would make fun of him. Ah well just sitting there staring at everyone wouldn’t get the report done.
“the element belonging to atomic number 74 is tungsten. It is a shiny silvery white metal. Tungsten was used extensively for the filaments of old-style incandescent light bulbs, but these have been phased out in many countries. Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals and is alloyed with other metals to strengthen them and is the heaviest metal known to have a biological role. Some bacteria use tungsten in an enzyme to reduce carboxylic acids”
Deep breath it was over and he could totally sit down.

Student Name: Pherein

Response:
Pherein knew that some of her classmates really disliked public speaking but really it wasn’t anything that hard. Sure if you let insecurities fester in you then nerves would poke their head and you would suddenly get all flustered. However everyone had to do it and once you got a good feel for everything then speaking was easy. So she researched her element and stood up confidently when her turn came up.

“The element belonging to the atomic number 90 is Thorium. It is a weakly radioactive silvery metal. Thorium is an important alloying agent in magnesium, as it imparts greater strength and creep resistance at high temperatures. Thorium oxide is used as an industrial catalyst. It can also be used as a source of nuclear power and it is more common than fossil fuels and Uranium.”

There wasn’t really much about it considering most of the technology today was based on magic an crystals but the report was good enough to at least tell something about it.

Student Name: Frey
Stage: Senior
Response:
Frey made a slight face when the teacher explained what they were doing and pulled out the books quickly writing down notes about his element. He wasn’t really a fan of public speaking, or speaking to people in general, although he could carry on a conversation quite well while at his work.

“Berkelium is the element belonging to atomic number 97. It is a man made silvery radioactive metal. Because it is so rare, berkelium has no commercial or technological use at present. Berkelium was first produced in December 1949, at the University of California at Berkeley, and was made by Stanley Thompson, Albert Ghiorso, and Glenn Seaborg. Less than a gram of it is made each year.”

Okay that had to be enough. However he did have another dislike, doing a report when there really wasn’t anything about the element to find.
