Maia nestled herself against Dari. "We could go at night, all three of us, when Toby isn't busy." She didn't figure Toby was often not busy. But maybe sometime. "I liked going out for ice cream today," she said. "We should do that more often. And maybe we can bring Annie too."

"It might be too risky to have me come out at night. I could join you, but I don't think I should swim," Dari explained softly. He didn't want to upset her with facts of life. He could pass for a human only conditionally. His public life was limited.
"Absolutely. I'm sure Annie would enjoy some ice cream." She was fae, after all. They'd lured her in with honey.

Maia frowned slightly. He couldn't swim? Why not? He had at the beach. Did HQ keep him away from others? "Well, you don't have to," She said. She knew what it was like to be afraid for her safety, after all. Maybe Dari had the same issue: people laying in wake for pictures to post on the internet. "The water might be too cold anyway. We could rest on shore. Toby and I will protect you."
Just like he and Toby had taken care of her.

Dari smiled. It was a sweet sentiment, that she would keep him safe. It wasn't only his own safety that he worried for, though. He was only passable as a human at certain points and there may well be someone on the beach who could call him out. This world was not ready yet for the idea of aliens and what the FBPI did.
"That would be nice. We'll have free time to see other things."

They'd have free time. Maia rested her head against Dari, covering her mouth with a hand as she yawned. "Good," she said. "I'm sure there's all sorts of things we can do." Like leave the place. Return to Oregon, Dari had been able to swim there. "We could go back," She suggested. "Go back and swim every night on my beach."

"We're not going to be taking your house from you, nor your beach. You'll be able to go back there in time, it's just not safe for you to live there. You can't go back so soon, but some day you will be able to." It might only have been minorly comforting, but hopefully it would help the selkie's mood. "We'll have to make you feel comfortable on your own again, because we unfortunately won't be able to stay."

Dari's words seemed to have a negative effect. She moved so she was looking away from him. She had realized that she did want to go home, but not alone. The two agents had become her first adult friends: and she didn't want to be rid of them so soon.
"Then I won't go," she said, putting a pillow over her face. "I'll stay here."

Dari watched her turn. So that hadn't been reassuring at all. Hum. Rather than offer more words, he reached up to rub her back.
"It's all going to be alright. It's hard at first, I won't lie to you, but you're going to be fine."

Dari was trying to help, Maia knew that. She didn't move away he touched her, nor when he spoke. And while she doubted the validity of his words, he seemed to believe them. She closed her eyes.

Dari felt her breathing slow.
"Try to sleep. I will still be here in the morning." He'd just take tonight to meditate a little. At least that was the word they had ended up assigning it. It was a sort of altered state of consciousness where he floated in semi-awareness. It helped time pass and he always 'woke' feeling refreshed.

Reassured by his presence and the promise that he'd still be there in the morning, Maia felt herself drift off. She snuggled into her blanket letting the pillow fall from her face as her grip on it loosened.
It would be an uneasy sleep.

It took very little time for Dari to get comfortable and drift away himself. It would be Maia's shifting that broke the spell of his meditation although it did take him a few moments to recognize it. His eyes, ever unblinking, shifted back and forth as he came-to. Uh-oh. He hadn't had his alarm set and wasn't paying attention. What time was it?

It was roughly two am when Maia awoke, jumping from the bed (and Dari, poor guy) as if it'd burned her. She glanced out the window. "Still dark," she commented, seeming to be talking to herself. She hadn't yet noticed that Dari was awake.
Sleep had been difficult in the hotel as well. She'd played games with Dari to pass the time until they could go out on the town. She sat in the armchair in the front room. Maybe she'd find something to do that'd lull her to sleep.

Dari propped himself up and watched Maia leave. He peered at the clock himself. Well, it was still the wee hours of the morning. At least he hadn't missed work. The poor selkie didn't seem comfortable at all, but the first night was always the hardest. He slid out of bed and came to meet her in the living room. Would she prefer staying at his place? It was only slightly more lived-in. He thought it was more the missing home that hurt Maia, not the place she was in.
"Are you alright?"

Maia looked up at the sound of Dari's voice. She didn't seem to register the question at first. "I'm--" she could have lied. She could have said the place was wonderful and she didn't miss home; but she knew Dari would know better. "I'm alright," she said at last. "I can't sleep."
