Len gave a shriek of joy and sprinted off towards Ike, tackling and hugging him.
"Yulleh! Malachi! BAH! I got so scared after class, there was the blood coming out your ears and I didn't know where you went and you're aliiiiive!" she said, hugging him and slipping into a mix of English and Rijani. "I was so worried!"
Oh no.
Ducking his head in shame, Julian forced himself to smile, his face half hidden by the low hood. The scratches on his face were damnably slow healing...
"Hey, guys!" he said, happy to see them truly regardless of the shame.
Ethan, off to the side with cow's blood spattered down his school uniform, waved.
"Hey," he said cheerfully.

Lenore relinquished her death grip on Malachi long enough to gape at him in astonishment.
"He's... William's... oh, Bah!" Len gasped and hugged him again, overcome in a completely uncharacteristic show of emotion. "Malachi...!"
Feeling inexplicable guilt bubble up under the shame, Julian willed the cuts to heal quicker. He refused to let anything screw up his time with Rabid this time around.
"Hiding? I'm not hiding, I'm just..." he trailed off as he felt the last bit of rent skin knit together again. With a grin, he pulled back the hood and shook out his flattened hair. "Trying to keep dry."
Edging close and looping an arm about her waist, Julian kissed Rabid lightly.
"I can't even tell you how much I missed you," he said, his tone instantly softened.
Ethan blinked, not comprehending, then glanced down at his uniform. He grumbled and scrubbed ineffectually with his loosened tie, spreading the blood further.
"It's not what it looks like, I swear," he said, a laugh caught in his voice. "It's just cow's blood."
Like that made the situation any better.
He could hear the bird, and was growing slightly irritated that she hadn't whistled for him yet. He'd grown woefully thin during her absence - he was smart enough to know that the idiots that had been skulking in his woods in the winter had spooked her.
But that was hardly a good reason to stop feeding him, for goodness sake.
At the approach of yet another unwelcome visitor, the creature called Chase crouched in the brush, his bulk surprisingly well hidden. His four eyes glared out, pupils slitted.

Realizing at last that she was probably cracking the poor boy's ribs, Lenore finally let Malachi go. Looking at him with nothing short of adoration, she nodded eagerly.
"Ah, Malachi, I'm so happy for you," she said. Twiddling her spindly fingers in sudden shyness, she flushed a slightly darker shade of gray and looked around.
"Sooo... other than that, how've you been?"
Hugging her close, eyes half-closed and a curious smile on his face, Julian said nothing for a few moments.
"...I wanted to come and see you, I swear. Work's just... ahh. Never mind," he said, the smile grown wider. He felt rather odd at the moment- all the stress, all the worry, every sick feeling of shame and fear was just... gone. He'd forgotten what a comfort being around her was.
"I've been doing alright. Nothing new." he said.
Ethan grinned with pleasure, wringing his tie as he tried to get the blood off.
"I'm good! In school," he said, pausing to spread his arms and show off his uniform proudly. "I'm doing well, I think." He flushed slightly and grinned again.
"And you?"
Four eyes rested on the six-legged creature and it's little... fluff-thing.
Hmph.
Chase growled lightly, his breath coming out in a huff. He could smell the food the bird had brought, and yet she was just letting it sit there! Accursed little carrion-bird.
Fidgeting, Chase finally gave in and crawled through the brush, main eyes on the brown-bagged prize while the secondary set lingered on the two new creatures.

The shyness disappating as fast as it had come, Lenore smiled.
"Pretty good. Mum took away my cherry bombs, so there's nothing to do around the house now." she said matter-of-factly. "I was just out here feedin' Chase, haven't been out here in months."
Feeling quite content, Julian nodded in interest.
"Cool. Which play?"
Ethan shrugged nonchalantly, his grin turning sheepish.
"Eh... well, I'm pretty sure I'm passing most of my courses," he amended cheerfully. "Stressed? What's wrong?"
Ears flicked in the direction of the weird growls, and Chase huffed again, displeased. All he wanted was dinner, dammit. Ears twitching and then settling flat back, he settled on his belly under the volumous cover and went stone-still. Only his eyes moved, pairs alternating between the food and the latest creatures invading his personal space.

Pulling out a tray of liver, Lenore wrinkled her nose and pulled a grotesque face as she unwrapped it and held it out.
"Gods, Chase, you like the grossest stuff," she said in an accusatory tone.
Snatching away the gruesome treat from the bird, Chase gnawed at it with pleasure. Settling down onto his belly, a ragged, rumbling growl that could have been a purr welled up. Eyeing the bird's companions lazily, he scooted forward a little and bowed his head slightly, flicking his ears. Food? Check. Companionship from the only creatures he marginally liked in a five mile radius? Check.
All that was missing was an ear scratch.
Flicking his ears again, he blinked slowly at the white creature, openly and obviously.
Julian feigned an evil laugh, shrugging easily.
"Pfft. You know I'd do it," he said. "I mean...no, yeah. I'd do it."
He would, too.
Ethan blushed brighter, the smile grown more obvious.
"Well... she's, um..." he laughed, looking for all the world like a normal, happy kid with a crush. It was a welcome change from the somber, quiet boy that was usually lurking around.
"Her name's Syrelle." he said, the smile turning secretive. "We're... kind of... in the same classes."
