"Has anyone ever made very much progress while working with the Joker?" Donna asked as she approached Dr. Villa's office door. "Or... does the Joker make things difficult before any progress can be made?" She had heard that Dr. Quinn had come up with a theory about the Joker before she herself had... turned. That was the most, and the last time she had ever heard anything about anyone getting close to figuring out the Joker.

"At least it seems things have worked themselves out between you and your family." Ally called out from her cell across from Arell and CJ. Her own tray of food sitting on a small table in front of her cot. She sat on the bed picking at the meat with her fork. "This could have been much more... unpleasant."

========================================

Gossamer meanwhile sat on her cot, picking at her dinner tray with the plastic spork she had been left with. She may have been given the freedom of not having the cuffs, but... she apparently had still been too rough with the guards earlier to be trusted with anything sharp or metal. She wasn't very hungry anyway. She had far too much on her mind to have an appetite. She wasn't sure she was tired either.

She didn't know why she had such a large void in her memory. That had never happened before. She always remembered everything... whether she wanted to or not. And how was she going to figure out what had happened? Could she really trust the doctors to help her with that? Or... should she try to talk to the clown on her own? He... did seem to know her after all.

C.J. looked up when Anna mentioned they got off pretty lucky this time. "T'be honest, getting the facts straight, I ain't that mad. Got no problem gunning Fisk down if he decides to pull anything funny though." he said with a smirk and continued to eat. "Kinda hope he does. That way I could smuggle some hot sauce back in!" he mentioned on an off-hand comment as Arell nodded in agreement.

"Dis stuff tastes like de MRE's Pappy used t' have us eat on de base . . . all aside, kinda glad we got off easy dis time, che'!" Arell drawled.

"Twenty doctors have investigated into the Joker, not counting myself," Dr. Villa responded as they reached his office, "Resulting in twenty different hypotheses."

He opened the door, and once again, held it open for Donna.

Donna smiled, then moved past Dr. Villa to walk back into his office again. ”Twenty theories and not one has managed to get anyone any closer to getting in the Joker's head?” she asked as she moved towards the chair to sit down again.

Ally smiled slightly. ”You'd prefer to come back here rather than stay out and about where you can us hot sauce on whatever food you want?” she asked.

"The problem with trying to diagnose the Joker," Hector began as he closed the door again behind them, "Is that, despite being almost undeniably insane, he's still more than smart enough to know that you're trying to diagnose him." He moved around until he was between the desk and the cabinet with the liquor.

Then, he asked, "Were you planning on another drink, or was that just my idea?"

Donna smiled at him as she made herself comfortable in the chair again. "One more shouldn't hurt." she replied. "I usually don't drink while at work, but this has been a rather eventful day compared to what I'm used to working with on a daily basis."

Hector grabbed the liquors, and poured into two fresh glasses. He handed the whiskey to Donna, keeping the Tuaca for himself again, and then sat down in the chair next to Donna; he liked to reserve the chair behind the desk for when he either by himself, for someone who wasn't a colleague.

Settling himself, he said to her, "Anyways, I rather do not feel I need to create my own theory, when one of his previous doctors have already created on that I believe to be the most accurate. Dr. Ruth Adams once made the hypothesis that, rather than CLINICAL insanity, the Joker suffered from a kind of super-sanity, a term she coined herself. He is incapable of filtering out the complete chaos around him from everyday life, so his only defense mechanism is to simply go with the flow. It explains why some days, he's simply a prankster, and others, he's a murdering sociopath. He has no distinct personality, and as such, reinvents himself every day."

"Really?" Donna asked, taking a sip of the whiskey. "That... does make a bit of sense for what I know of the Joker. I did find it interesting how it seems so random when he is harmless or dangerous." she said. Then she paused for a long moment in thought. "Dr. Adams... I recall hearing that name before, but not much more. Did she... retire?" she asked, trying to carefully touch the subject just in case she had to leave due to something the Joker had done.

C.J. shrugged. "Well, that's how my plot goes I guess. Boy meets girl in one forum, finds her in another forum, falls in love with girl, bad guys don't like girl, boy decides to do something about it and boy is eventually turning into a questionably homicidal weirdo that's trying to keep the family adopted safe. It's like Die Hard, but John McClain winds up back in the nut-house after every movie." he pointed out.

Arell looked at C.J. with a brow raised. "Dat's DEFINITELY not how 'Die Hard' is. I saw dat movie AT LEAST five times!" Arell growled back.

"She did, as a matter of fact," Dr. Villa replied, nodding, "After the April Fool's Day incident. She never stated her reasons for leaving, though. Pity, really." He took a sip of his drink, then sighed.

(( CBJ Note: I'm referring to the events of the TPB 'Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth' when I speak of the April Fool's Day incident ))

“Can't say I've ever seen that movie.” Anna said with a small smile, picking at her plate. She was nearly finished with it, and had plenty of time to finish what was left. ”I'm fascinated with movies sometimes, but I've never been one to just waste hours sitting there watching one. Sort of have to be in the mood to watch one.”

“Now that... I do recall hearing a bit about.” Donna mused. “Perhaps that's where I've heard her name.” Then she took another sip of her drink and sighed. “I wasn't anywhere near Arkham during that time. Glad I wasn't. I'm not sure I'd be able to handle a situation like that well. Everyone escaping would be one thing. Just... lingering around here and trapping people like us inside. With some of the patients here, it's dangerous enough being in a room with one of them.” she said, then looked down at the floor thoughtfully. “I can't... I can't quite understand how people like Batman do it. Just leap into situations like that.”

"Ah, the Batman," Dr. Villa said, smiling as he leaned back a little, looking up as he continued thoughtfully, "That, young lady, would be the ultimate patient. I would love to try my hand at solving HIM."

Arell smiled back. "Dere was a drive-in back home we'd go to a lot in Lou'siana. If'n we wasn't chasin' bad guys, we'd prob'ly be dere." he mentioned as C.J. finished his plate of food . . . yup, still tasted like cafeteria food!

"Don't blame ya, Anna. The plots are great but some of 'em are just weird." C.J. chimed in, trying to use his spork as a toothpick.

DR. GRAY
location: Dr. Villa's office
status: chatting.

Donna smiled a bit and leaned forwards in her chair. ”Has anyone come close to so much as hearing about Batman's mental state? Hearing someone talk about how the Batman thinks? His habits? Anything of that sort?” she asked, interested. This was getting them off the topic at hand, but it was an interesting topic to derail onto if there was any information to go on.

”I used to enjoy movies.” Anna began. ”Then I lived in a ti- … place that didn't really have tv entertainment. I got used to not having it, and now most movies just don't.... catch my interest.” she said, taking another bite of her food.

Dr. Villa
Location: His personal office
Status: Conjecturing

"Only supposition, conjecture, and hearsay," Hector answered, leaning forward himself, resting his elbows on his thighs as he held his glass in both hands in front of him, "Once you've been here as long as I have, you learn that it's considered politically incorrect around here to try and diagnose someone who's supposedly done as much to help this city as the Bat has."

He lifted his glass in one hand to take another sip, then returned it to its previous two-handed grip as he continued. "So politically incorrect, in fact, that all the supposition, conjecture and hearsay I mentioned earlier is, in truth, my own. Apparently, I'm the only one with the coglioni to try and observe the absurdly obvious, rather than blindly accept at face value what is being told to us." As he kept talking, a quiet anger filled his voice; he didn't get louder, but instead grew quieter, and more purposeful in tone. "The man behind the Bat is not doing this out of the kindness of his heart, or out of some sense of duty, like what Commissioner James Gordon would have us think. I have a great respect for the Commissioner, but to this day, I have met no one who is THAT selfless, to dedicate their whole lives to fighting the super-criminal element, without so much as a single special power to set them apart from the rest of humanity. Sure, police officers fight regular crime all the time, but the Batman, and other such heroes go after the villains. It takes a special breed to hunt down even the lightest of these criminals, and let's be honest, Gotham City's super-villain population is far above par, in size, complexity, and danger. The point is, no single normal human being could hope to face down the villains that the Bat brings here on a near-nightly basis."

Sitting upright again, he added, "I emphasize 'normal', because I do not think the Batman is normal. I believe that he is a flawed person, driven to do this more out of compulsion than desire. A deep-seated psychosis that demands that he take action against the criminal element within our city." He shot back the rest of his drink in a single gulp, and concluded with, "And that is the proverbial elephant in the room: the Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham, could in fact be a psychotic that, under normal circumstances, would be a patient here, rather than the heroic Caped Crusader that the papers color him."
