"...flying donuts...where you goin' friends, I just wanna eat you..." Shiro dozed off happily lost in his food filled dreams, unaware of anything else right now. He lay there peacefully until something entered his nostrils, an aroma wafting through the air of deliciously cooked animal flesh. "Flying...burgers!?" His nose twitched as the smell of the burgers Lee had bought for him washed over him and Shiro immediately shot up on the bench, the first burger half way eaten before he realized Lee was sleeping next to him. "Hmm?" He smiled as he looked at her, it seemed she was pretty tired too. Shiro chuckled a bit as he quietly finished off the rest of the burgers quickly, barely bothering to chew as he was so hungry. When he was finished he sighed happily, feeling much stronger now that he'd eaten. Normally he'd jump right back into things but decided to let Lee rest some more, getting comfortable on the bench again as he closed his eyes resting up some more.

Lee, fast asleep, curled up closer to Shiro; her body was migrating towards his source of warmth. A small smile appeared on her face as she dreamt of fluffy clouds and warm beaches. She dreamt of her family and friends; people that she hadn't seen in years. But as a chill blew through the courtyard they were in, her dream became cold as ice. Instead of warm, smiling faces, Lee saw cold blue shells whose eyes stared up at her blankly. She started to shiver partly because of the cold, but more so because of her nightmare. Ever since That Night it haunted her off and on, forcing her to develop interesting sleep patterns that required her to try to stay up as long as possible, then crash for an hour or two.

Shiro was not lost in a dream of flying food this time as he was not really able to fall asleep a second time. Before it had been from hunger blood loss and exhaustion, but after that short nap from before and the burgers Shiro was feeling pretty good. He was really just relaxing there for Lee's sake, as well as restoring as much of his own energy as he could. One of his eyes cracked open as Lee curled up closer to him, smiling a bit enjoying their joint warmth and wondering what she might be thinking. She was a tough person, a strong woman who could handle herself well, but she wasn't really as cold as she made herself out to be at first. When it came down to it she was just another human being like everyone else. Or at least that's what he thought anyway. As she slept however Lee began to shiver, and Shiro wondered why. There was a breeze for a moment but it wasn't that bad was it? "Oi oi, you ok?" He asked quietly as he shook her gently.

A heart shielded, from the pain and hurt, and also from the joys of life; frozen and guarded...

Lee, desperately needing sleep, wasn't waking up too easily. "Anyone? Where is everyone? Daddy...sisters...don't leave me." she barely mumbled. She continued to shiver and a single tear rolled down her face. "I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner...don't leave me. You...can't die on me..." she continued. She was dreaming of when she had first seen the destruction of her home. After she quickly came to the fact that her loved ones were dead, she left the place, trying to run from new found fears and from the sadness. Though ones own emotions are hard to suppress and even harder to completely remove. But all the same, Lee had tried her hardest to no avail.

...this heart begins to thaw.

Shiro was forced to sit there and watch as Lee continued to be lost in her inner thoughts, the turmoil in her head was surely devastating. She would mumble about the people she lost as a tear rolled down her face, Shiro didn't know what the scene in her head looked like but it must have been truly horrific to leave such a scar in her mind. "Lee, you alright Lee?" Shiro asked a little louder, nudging her a little more. He still didn't feel right about waking her, but it seemed like sleep was worse for her than a little fatigue at the moment. But as he shook her lightly he didn't know what to say. Wake up it's only a nightmare? That didn't work in a situation where the nightmare actually happened. "Lee you're at a Garden, this isn't the same time nor place as that which troubles you. You gotta wake up." Bones and bruises could be healed and restored given time, even the worst injuries would eventually get better. But there was no cure for a shattered mind.

Shiro's words slowly roused Lee from her sleep. She saw the snow around her, and felt the bench beneath her, yet she couldn't figure out why she felt so warm. Then her mind became fully aware and she saw that she had been sleeping on Shiro. She quickly moved away, slightly embarrassed. "S-sorry, Shiro" Lee said, her face sporting a slight blush. "I didn't realize..." she said as she got up from the bench. The cold hit her again and she clenched her thin jacket around her. It amazed her at what a difference a thin layer of fabric made. She stumbled through the snow a bit. "Come on, we should find you some more potions." she said over her shoulder, hiding her increasingly red face. You can't do this Lee, you can't get emotionally attached. It only brings the hurt of saying goodbye she told herself. You have to get back to business; cold, hard facts, no nonsense.

Shiro looked at Lee as she sprang up from her sleep and chuckled a little. "Heh heh, it's fine." He said simply, following her lead and getting up, stretching as several bones in his body cracked and popped pleasantly. "I dunno, after some meat and a nap I feel fine." He said with his hands behind his head, oblivious to the fact that Lee was hiding her face. She got pretty red, is it that cold out? Huh, guess some people are pretty sensitive to the temperature. Still a little drowsy Shiro followed with a big yawn, almost forgetting that there was a class they had ditched or even that they were at a different garden. It's not that Shiro wasn't particularly bright, more like he was very simple.

"Y-you sure?" Lee asked, turning around and eyeing him. However, the sight of him only made her blush more so she quickly looked away. She rubbed her arms to try and get the warmth back in them. She could handle the cold, liked it even, but that was with a full set of clothes. Without her shirt it seemed to seep in through her oversized jacket. She too had forgotten about their class in the midst of all of the excitement. "I think I'll go for a walk." Lee said, even though she was still shivering some. She tried to walk through the snow, but her mind was elsewhere, and so she kept stumbling in the deep patches. Upset, she gave up and sat on the cold ground, letting it numb her body and mind so that the hurt would go away, if only for a little while.

"Well, not really. But not being sure hasn't really stopped me before." He said with a smile as he tapped his wound with his knuckles, which hurt a little more than he thought it would. At least he wasn't bleeding though. Looking at the crimson stained shirt he scratched his head sheepishly. "Sorry Lee, don't think you'll want this shirt back anytime soon." As he looked around though he didn't see her at first as she had started walking into the snow while Shiro was lost in his mind. "Eh?" Looking around randomly he tried to see if he could find her, noticing her tracks in the snow. following them he finally found her sitting on the cold ground doing who knew what. "Oi oi, didn't we already go over this? You'll catch a cold if you just sit there like that." With that Shiro sighed, taking a seat on the cold ground next to her, wincing a bit as he realized his torso was more involved in his every movement than he thought. "So, what's troublin' ya? Even a dull fella like me can tell something's up. Was it your dream?"

Lee was almost shaking now from the cold. But the numbing effect it gave her was like a drug. "I'm fine." she said matter-of-factly. "It was just a nightmare, n-nothing more." But she couldn't keep the charade going long, her emotions caught up to her despite the cold. She curled up in the snow, frozen tears licking her face. "It was a horrible nightmare, Shiro." Lee said, recounting her previous statement. "I had been able to get in touch with my family, before the raid. Father knew something was going to happen, he wanted me to take my younger sisters and keep them safe in the rural country towns." she started to cough from the cold. "I agreed, he had respected my self-induced exile for nearly 4 years. However, I was a little ways away, but I ran and begged and used all the money I had to get there as fast as I could." she pounded the ground with her fist. "And when I got there...the capital, everyone...was destroyed. All because some stupid people couldn't figure out how to bring change peacefully!" she cried into her hands, the first time since that night. "And now I'm all alone...and it's all my fault."

Shiro listened quietly as Lee recalled the events of the terrible day, such sadness in her voice and in her tears. As she spoke, her coughing and her shivering, it was clear that the cold was getting to her despite her words. She wasn't going to admit it, and was very broken by her thoughts to even consider their situation. She wasn't the only one either, Shiro was getting very very cold as well, his fingers numb and his face starting to sting. He wasn't use to this cold, and even his oblivious nature was starting to notice that he wasn't dressed nearly well enough for this climate, especially considering that he took a dunk in the fountain before class started and drying off was impossible in this weather. Hearing a voice in the back of his head though he nodded, junctioning Ifrit and letting the energy of the fire demon run through him. Shiro warmed up very quickly, though Ifrit didn't like this weather either, and his body started to give off heat as well. Moving closer to Lee he placed an arm around her, rubbing her arms with his hands to help get her warmed up as he breathed out light embers"Hey now, don't cry. And don't blame yourself, you did everything you could to get there, some thing are simply out of our reach. It isn't your fault they died, your not to blame for the chaotic behavior of others or for stupid conflicts."As Shiro spoke he continued to warm up, the snow around where they were sitting melted away and evaporated, but before it got too hot he pulled the heat back a bit telling Ifrit to take it easy."Blaming yourself for something that isn't your fault is a slippery slope you can[never climb up out of. it's not somewhere you want to go."

Shiro's warmth enveloped her, and dried her tears. She seemed to calm down now that she had spoken her emotions, and truly faced what had happened. She leaned into him again, grateful to have someone to talk to. "Thank you." was all she said. For a while she stayed silent, letting her breathing match Shiro's. It reminded her of home.

Shiro simply smiled and nodded, breathing deeply in the silence and warming the both of them. He didn't want to say anything at first, silence is golden after all. He was content to sit there in the snow, helping the two of them stay warm and giving her an outlet for her sadness."When do you think people die?" He said eventually, smiling as he looked up at the sky."When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? Naw. When they are ravaged by a disease? Naw. When someone betrays them and stabs 'em in the back? No way. People die when...they are forgotten. As long as the will of your loved ones lives in you, and you remember them, people never die. At least that's what my dad told me, but he was kind of a weird fellow you know?"Shiro said with a light chuckle as he looked from the sky back to Lee."I don't know if that really helps or anything, or even what it really means. But I guess he was telling me, its good to morn, but not to be sad...cause people live in our hearts. Death...isn't such a scary thing when you think about it like that. You know?"

Lee smiled, she liked to think of herself as her father's living legacy. "That's a nice way to look at things." she said. She felt as if a weight had been lifted. For too long she had dragged the guilt of her family's death with her. But now it was gone. "Well what do you want to do?" she said, half asleep. "We pretty much ditched the class I guess. And technically you still can't fight with your wound..." she said, trailing off.

"Oi oi, you underestimating me?" Shiro said with a frown at her comment, but soon smiled again and started laughing. "Naw, you're probably right. I'm more afraid of what you'd do to me if I tried than actually fighting with this cut." Shiro let go of Lee long enough to fall flat on his back, snow continuing to melt away around them as he relaxed. "Headmistress always has a few Curaga's on her, so I'm sure she could fix me up real quick. Still, we already did ditch class so there's no hurry in getting back." Staring up at the clouds in the sky Shiro took in a deep breath and shot out several embers as he exhaled. "I dunno, what do you wanna do?" He asked with a yawn that was more of boredom than sleepiness.
