"What is the story behind the giants? And what caused them to use that magic to wipe themselves out?" Lore inquired.
He didn't know the story so he had referred to the creation and to their 'deaths' as it were. He tilted his head looking at Elnara, recalling Queen Amalthea from the wedding.

"I don't know," Lothiriel admitted freely. "I don't even know much about the Druids ... they were powerful mages from all of the races - Elves, Humans, Dwarfs, and they had sworn to work together to protect the land ... but something happened ... the giants learned some of their magic, and I think it was accidental that they wiped themselves out ... but ..."

Elnara looked at her niece through narrowed eyes.
"Seeker," she murmured softly, "are you sure you're not talking about the Mawgawr? This sounds ... like their story, not giants ..."
Unless she was mis-remembering things again ...

It was times like this he wish for a book or something so he could at least understand and glean information. Which showed how dependent he was on books.
"But you're not sure?"

Lothiriel stared at Elnara.
"Yes," she said certainly, "Mawgawr ... the giants. That's what I'm talking about." She looked at Lore. "I may not know the details exactly, but if you need I can find out for you."

Elnara rubbed her forehead with her hand. "Lothiriel, Mawgawr aren't giants ... they're trolls ... no wonder I didn't know what you were talking about."
She turned to Lore. "She's got the basic story right, but they're trolls, not giants. Not the trolls that you might think of, they're half-human ... I think at one time, they were human ... during the First Great War, they were changed by their surroundings, and by Melkor, and once they learned - stole, I believe - some magic from the Druids, they couldn't control it, and they destroyed themselves and their land ... the reason why the Northland is still so barren and dead after thousands of years' opportunity to repair itself."

When he thought of trolls he thought of... well he was sure his idea of a troll was much different so he was going to take it as it was.
"I take it these trolls? Are quite big?"
Honestly he felt like a fish out of water at the moment trying to keep up with everything much less the story.

"Bulky big, not tall big," Elnara explained. "They're like ... tall dwarfs. Though you haven't seen the dwarfs either," she murmured softly. "That's no good ... Hm ... I ... really don't know how to explain them ..."

"Perhaps it would be easier if he were to see one for himself," Lothiriel said softly. "We saw one while we were up there ... I can show you both what they look like."
Without waiting for a reply, she began to sing, her lips moving soundlessly as an image appeared in the middle of the kitchen.
The being was vaguely human-shaped, though it was hunched over so that it's head was almost in front of it rather than on top of it. Its shoulders and torso were huge, and it was quite clear just by looking at it that it was muscle, and not fat. It's skin was almost bark-like, leathery, and its fingers were like thick sausages, good for gripping but not for delicate movements. Standing on the floor, it nearly reached the ceiling, but its width was so great that it didn't look tall at all. It had no hair, and was wearing only a loincloth made of a shred of animal skin of some sort.

Lore craned his neck a bit, he had to admit it had troll like features from waht he recalled of Gaian trolls, but this thing was tall... not that one could tell from looking at it until compared to the ceiling.
"It is.... quite tall, but very wide, it's like a wall."

Elnara's eyes grew shadowed as she looked at the troll.
"Lothiriel, you have to tell Aunt Amalthea," she murmured again. "She needs to know ..."

Lothiriel stopped singing and the image disappeared into the air.
"We have," she nodded. "I don't know how much she can do ... she's the queen after all, and in the Westland things are different, it's the King who has the power., not the queen ... but I'm sure she'll tell Uncle Eregon to take the appropriate measures."
She paused.
"In the meantime," she added, "Uncle Elrohir has increased the guard around the ranch and the valley ... Aragost has been warned, he's training the other men in how to deal with them ..."

Lore wondered if they were hostile, but since they stole magic and manage to destroy themselves with it among other things.... he might have to take that as a yes.
"Then everything for the moment that can be done, has been....."

"Yes," Lothiriel nodded. "Except to warn the Eastland, which is just as close to them as the dwarfs are. We're hoping the winter slows their progress for a while, but once Stirring hits we have to leave right away and warn Pen's family. They're in charge of the Eastland for now, they have to prepare to defend it."

Elnara frowned softly. "Isn't it a little risky, waiting until after winter is over to warn them?" she asked. "If the trolls still have their magic, it will be far too late for the Eastland ..."
She could understand if they wanted to wait out this storm, but to wait that long ...
