Nyl looked at the piece of paper in her hands. It was written in shaky, messy handwriting, and she frowned at it. Still, it was the best she could do.

I've been called away for a short period of time to deal with a few personal matters. If and when I return, I'm hoping I'll be ready for my next lesson in Ho. While I'm gone, teach the rest of your students--they're far more ready than I am. Good luck.

He nodded softly as the door closed behind them. He popped his elbows and moved past the coals, towards the far wall. Two poles stood out of the floor, about three feet high, and about eight inches in diameter. He hopped above the first and motioned for her to do the same on the other. He crouched low, holding one hand out, palm up. "This is your first attempt at using chakra to actually raise the temperature in a very confined space--in this case, above your palm--to a point where the flame in my palm will be able to sustain itself. Understand?"

Nyl Phairen She looked up at him, raising an eyebow. "Do I need to split myself for this?" "Mmh, no I don't think so. Feeling the temperatures isn't nescissary. You won't burn yourself, trust me. If the temperatures in the area aren't hot enough, the fire will go out. And your own chakra can't hurt you, so you'll be fine."

Seph snapped his fingers. "Friction is key." A flame burst to life over his fingers. "Move the chakra over your palm very very quickly, thus increasing the temperature above your palm."

She just kept staring at him. "Move what chakra? Am I trying to make fire or just heat?"

"First heat. Making fire is more advanced. At a high enough temperature, fire can sustain itself even without fuel. -If- you can keep the temperature up by moving a focused chakra around in your hand, creating a 'chakra-friction.' Then we'll test it. We'll see if the flame over my fingers right now will sustain itself over your palm."

"Alright. Move the chakra above your palm in all different directions. The friction around will increase the temperature."

She looks at him one last time, then does as he asks. After a few minutes, she looks at him again.
"...All this is doing is making my hand very warm."

"You've seen how rubbing to sticks together can create fire, right? If you can recreate the temperatures that meet that, then you can sustain fire."

"Actually, I've never had luck of any kind rubbing sticks together. But then, I only get cold if I'm sick, so I don't really need to make fire."
She went back to concentrating on her hand, frowning at it as though that would make it work somehow. "I still don't think the air around it is very warm...my glove sure is, though."

He nodded some. "Hm." He rubbed his chin a bit. "Take off your glove, then, instead of trying to heat your hand, try and heat the area an inch above your hand. You have to concentrate very hard. Also, condense the area you're using chakra to an extremely small point. The size of a penny, okay?" I don't want to feel any chakra, other than your lifeforce, moving around except for that very tiny area, okay?"
