Karite was knocked aside by a force he knew all to well. Looking up into the eyes of Baki, he knew Maya was close by, and she was when Baki was shoved from above him. Scooting back moving to his feet he looked at her.
She had some nerve smiling like that. She had some nerve to even show her face to him. she called herself a leader? Letting someone in the clan hurt their own? That was something the Kun Komo would do. "Kore is not my pet, Kore is my friend and my partner. Kore is my brother." That smile made it hard to talk. She seemed out for blood, but she would get none this night. "Fight together you say? Since I have been here I have seen nothing but fighting against each other. Kore fights against Baki for power, I fight against you for respect. Where in that lies the togetherness? I find strength to help protect this clan Maya. To protect you. This is what you think of my strength?" The boy wiped his eyes as he looked at her. "If you want to punish me so be it, but never lay a hand on my partner again. Kore belongs to me. We are a team, I will take his punishment and my own gladly. This was not his fault, this was my own fault. Apologize for what you did, for not being able to control your own partner, or else." He would have threatened her with something, but he had nothing against her. She was stronger than he was. What could he do that would harm her.

Maya snarled at Karite, her own temper growing at his audacity. "Kore picked the fight, you little ingrate. Kore fights Baki because he chooses to. I never asked you to protect me, because Baki can protect me just fine. You fight me for a respect that was always there! Instead of fighting against me by yourself, instead of Kore trying to be the leader of the lion pride, you should try to be a team. You're both worthless alone, idiots! I will never apologize for trying to show you that you're hurting each other the more you treat yourselves this way. Baki is to me something that can't even be described in words. We are two halves of one whole - our bond cannot be broken. But for Kore to whine along like a kitten and show up alone like a lost cat, for you to even think that I would apologize to you - you're weak, Karite, and I don't know what you think I'm going to give you, but an apology is not it." Maya was fuming, and she unconsciously reached for her weapons. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and straightened herself out. Swallowing several times, because it hurt her much more than he knew to see Kore down, she managed to speak in a straight tone, though it was still obvious she was enraged. She still stared at the stars as she spoke.

"I think nothing of your individual strength. I've seen shinobi take individual strength and twist it into something disgusting. And as for me not being able to control Baki, you're very wrong. I was going to drag Kore's sorry a** over to the Tenmoki household, but I knew if I did, I would never have let you get away with it. Yuki would have had to save both your sorry asses, had I done what I wanted to do. Kore challenged Baki and lost. If you continue to challenge me, I will do much more than make you lose. And..." Maya leveled her eyes on Karite, her gaze soft and sad.

"And you haven't learned what it means to call yourself a team. You are not a team." She shook her head, and motioned towards the book piles she had left nearby, plus the bleeding frog. It almost made her chuckle, but she sighed again. "I'm trying to learn things outside of my comfort zone, to be a better leader. But I barely know how to be a leader, just the same as I barely know how to be a partner. Baki and I are not perfect, but we always work with each other. Except for the chuunin exams, I don't know when's the last time we were apart." Maya shook her head again and sat next to Kore's head, stroking the half-grown lion's head gently. "Kore will be fine, Karite. He just needs rest and good meals tomorrow. You let your temper judge me, and you didn't see what you did wrong. I let my temper lash out at you. I could have killed you, and you know it. The only togetherness that should exist within this clan is between you and Kore. I have nothing to do with that, and neither does Baki. Can you honestly say that there is togetherness between you and Kore? Did you feel pain at all today, when you were training? When Baki is hurt, I know. When I need help, Baki knows. Kore felt weak, and you still chose to train alone. You feel the need to earn respect from someone who doesn't even know how to be a leader, and Kore doesn't tell you that you need respect from yourself and from him. My respect will not earn you victory against the enemy. It's not going to make you stronger either. It's nice to have, sure, but it's not something you even need. What you need is Kore's respect - and I'm not sure if you have it, nor he yours." Maya looked at Karite, wondering if he'd continue his tirade...which had failed.

Karite clenched his jaw as Maya lashed out. Reaching for his weapons the same time she did he waited. His silver eyes pressed hard onto her trying to read every small detail. She had the nerve to touch Kore even after he told her to never touch him again. She spoke though with that voice she had only let out once. She was speaking like Maya, instead of Tategami Maya. "I am no weaker than you Maya, you are afraid of losing Baki and Kore, even Ruha. You are just as weak as I am. You are just better at hiding your fear." Sitting down Karite crossed his legs and took out the knuckles he got when he graduated to genin.

Putting the knuckles in front of him he stared at them. Another tool he couldn't use properly. "Your a leader, and all followers look for respect from their leaders. Weather or not I have Kore's respect he has earned mine. I have not done a good job at showing it though." Thinking back to Yuki-sama's words he looked at his little brother. "Kore is my core, he is what makes me whole. I had no reason to go out alone, but that is how I grew up. something you dont know about me Maya. I grew up alone much like you did. No one left me though, they just wanted nothing to do with me. So I lived by giving someone a reason to want me, I became a thief. Was damn good at it too, still am unfortunately."

Karite looked at Kore more and noticed how alike the two were.
"Kore is a hot head sometimes, but he can control his emotions better than I can, if he wasnt around who knows what would have happen to me. He is my eyes and ears when I can not see." Looking at the books, he was happy he had taught Maya to read, she would be better for it and it was already starting to show. "If you think your out of your comfort zone how do you think I feel Maya? I come from a powerful family in the wave country. I gave it all up to come here and Kore was the only one, who didnt try to kill me. My best friend is a lion Maya! How far out of my comfort zone am I?" The boy stood and walked towards his bo. He walked injured and slow. His body was still feeling the effects of his chakra exertion. Gripping his staff he turned to Maya. "I may have been wrong, but sometimes brute force teaches no lesson. I will work harder to be a team with Kore, but you will apologize. Even if it takes my whole life. You will apologize."

[ Shiiiiiit good roll... ]

Maya faltered, and sighed, rubbing her eyes. Karite was as scary as Shinichi, and if he left...

"I don't care what you came from, what you left. You chose this, Karite. It was your decision. I didn't force you into it, and I didn't make my decision easy and you know it. I'm...sorry, that I hurt you this way. But you had to learn this lesson. If Kore's not there for you, who will be? I won't be there to cover you, I won't be there to support you. I'm not gonna clean up after you and I'm not your mom." Maya lowered her head and unbuckled all the weapons she had on her. She would not fight Karite this way. She wasn't sure she wanted to fight him at all. Shimagakure was beginning to seem less and less like the home Shuga had carved out for her, and she didn't like it. Maya shifted, moving so that she would be curled up against Baki's side and not near Kore. She closed her eyes and turned her back towards Karite and his staff. He could do what he wanted, she wasn't going to do anything beyond think about how wrong Ichi had been. She'd been scared by a boy a rank lower than her, intimidated into an apology she didn't even want to give. Maya felt dirty and ashamed, and closed her eyes tightly against Baki's fur. Even his lower rumbles were no comfort. Finding no solace even in her partner, she stood slowly and reached for her tekagi, only to hesitate and shake her head.

"My whole life is a lion, Karite...not just my best friend. I come from a ruthless war where my parents were slaughtered and a drunkard was my next kin. I didn't graduate academy until my third time, and I don't deserve the rank of chuunin. I know nothing of thievery or of jutsu. I don't know why you stay when you could leave. I don't know why you follow someone who doesn't know her own way," she said quietly, leaving her weapon behind and leaving the grounds. Baki growled softly, confused, but rose and followed her quietly. Her books were forgotten, and so was the frog that Yuki had wanted her to study. Maya didn't understand where she had gone wrong, nor why she was still on the island. Shinichi wasn't someone she wanted to follow, the jungle woman was gone, Mai was dead, and there was no one left that she could talk to. Karite wanted things from her that she couldn't give him, and she hadn't even seen Xyn since before her departure for the Earth country. So much for that...

Maya just didn't know where she would end up.

[Exit Maya and Baki to ...]

Twilight....

Maya and Baki would spend their night wandering Shimagakure, not settling on any place to rest or spend the night. Maya was anxious, distraught and unsure of herself, and Baki merely wished for the girl to calm down. He was quite eager to go back and gnaw on the green-haired boy's leg for a while, but Maya needed him more than she needed another injury to deal with. Baki's thoughts and Maya's emotions would take numerous twists tonight, and who knew where they would end up by morning...?

Okay, so Maya and Baki WOULD spend their night wandering, but for the next few hours Maya was restless. She returned to the grounds quietly after Karite's retreat into his tent, almost went into her own, but decided instead to grab her weapons and her books, to protect herself and to study. Who knew what would happen...? The last time it was a band of ruthless attackers who killed half the villagers....so... Maya stood almost frozen for a few minutes, before realizing it would probably be smart to leave while Karite was busy ....

Karite was unsure at what had just happened but if one thing was certain, his world had just been changed. Maya had never shared her past with him like this before. Something was different, she hadnt cut out his tongue yet. As she leaned back she spoke again. She wondered why Karite followed her, that was simple answer. As she began walking away he yelled out to her. "I follow you because you are like me!" He would hope Maya would understand, if not then Baki would. He did not follow, he pulled Kore in to a tent, he decided it would be the best time to practice. He missed his late night practice, but Maya had shown up. "Hey, you think this is over? You are the leader now Maya, you cant just run off and leave the pride."

Karite stood from the tent and decided now was the best time to practice his taijutsu. If what Yuki-sama said was right he would have to train mind body and soul everyday to get any stronger, Kore would have to train right along side him from now on. With Maya would be to busy to try and judge his still growing technique. Spreading his legs, Karite began to punch the air, motioning his fist to body parts. Hooks and jabs, to fatal blows. He was well versed with his body, but they blows always seemed seconds to slow to catch his opponents. He needed to fix that. From what he had heard their were fighters who specialized in certain styles of combat. he wanted to be that fighter.

Too long. She had taken too long to think about what she was thinking about. Maya looked up at Karite, an emptiness in her eyes that couldn't be deciphered. "I am not like you. I am no leader," she said, her voice still quiet and subdued. It was almost eerie. Maya remembered the day she had found out Shuga had left for the mainland, leaving her in charge. Ichi said she would learn to be a good leader, and she would grow. But she wasn't growing at all! She wasn't the leader she was supposed to be, and Karite called her out on it continually. Did he enjoy rubbing it in her face? Was Kore subconsciously picking fights so Karite would be the 'top dog', so to speak? Maya held her books against her stomach, her tekagi strapped to her belt, against her back, and just stared at Karite, seeming to look right through him and into the darkness beyond.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 6:36 pm

Karite stopped training for a second and looked into the emptiness of her eyes. she looked much like he did before he meet her. She was his leader and he had done the one thing no follower should ever do and that is to question their leader. "Shuga left you ijn charge. You and Baki are all this pride has keeping it together. Leave us and we may as well be just another band of misfits. You know what it means to be Tategami and you have the strength to keep those teachings intact and to pass them on to me. If you dont want to be a leader than fine, fight me. The only way for you to lose that title is if I beat you. So if you dont want to be the one person I look to for answers when it comes to the Tategami, fight me." Karite didn't know what he was saying, Maya could easily beat him, but for a clan as looked down upon as the Tategami they needed a confident leader and Maya was it, shew just needed a rain check.

Maya lowered her gaze and dropped to the ground.

"I won't fight you."

She poked at the frog Baki had caught, and lost interest in it quickly enough. But damn...she did have books she had to read...and then...the frog thing...and now Karite. Maybe he'd be a better leader. Maya leaned against Baki, who was starting to growl softly and lick her face. She stared outside of the grounds, wondering where Resa was hiding. And Jhuga...the old cat was funny. Fight him...she'd lose. She wouldn't want to fight him. She murmured softly, "What happened to togetherness?" she almost mocked, but she didn't have the spirit to even argue with him. A verbal fight was too much of an effort for her, and that was saying something.

Karite crossed his arms for a second then shook his head. "The suck it Maya, we are a family, thats what you told me those years ago. You are the only one fit to lead. We all make mistakes, but I will follow you till the day I die. I trust in you Maya, so pick yourself up and remember we are family." Karite looked out into the grounds and sighed. Looking out on the grounds he felt a bit nostalgic. "Besides, if you dont lead the Tategami the Kun' Kumo and Uchia are going to start walking all over us."

Looking at her he smiled. He was sure Maya would get the message. As he got back to training he began to practice his windmill kicks, before long he was jumping higher and kicking faster then he had before. He had lacked on his Taijutsu training since Maya left, but that was about to change.

Uchiha...like she cared. Ichi was Uchiha...Su... she growled softly. Sukotto... but she didn't have the power to beat Sukotto. He was too strong - his own kind of clan leader. Maya's growl faltered. And the Kun'Kumo...she wasn't allowed to hate them. Ichi had told her a leader didn't hate. She didn't know what to do...Karite confused her, and she was angry. She turned away from him, knowing there was something true about what he said, but not wanting to believe it. She held her books tightly against her chest - it was funny that now she was hiding behind the words on pages that she hated so much. Maya sat silently, unsure of even thinking of showing emotion, and debating heavily getting up and leaving again.

Karite looked at Maya as she refused to say anything. Knowing Maya she had missed out on the simple things with Shuga. If his mother was here right now she would hug Maya. Walking slowly towards here his bare feet slipping into the grass as if they were made for his body. He pulled nearer to here and prayed she didn't slice his stomach wide open with those cat like reflexes. Nealing quietly behind her, the boy tried to quietly wrap his arms around her for a hug. "You are my family Maya, and the leader of this pride. We will follow you anywhere."

Maya could feel Karite's intention, and wondered if she should even move. She knew she could move out of the way, but... "A good leader knows how to lead, Karite...I haven't learned. Shuga just...left. I don't know what I'm doing, and it's obvious, since you're so unhappy and always fighting me, and Kore's always fighting Baki." Maya kind of shrugged away from Karite, letting him hug her - but not for too long. The contact made her uncomfortable, and she wasn't sure she liked it at all. She reached awkwardly and half hugged him, then scooted away to the other side of Baki. She mumbled something that was moderately incoherent, and looked out into the sky. Huh...well that was odd. There was smoke in the distance...

Karite was not surprised when Maya broke away from his form of kind contact. She claimed she didn't know how to lead but she had done a good job so far. "We aren't unhappy Maya, we are happiest when we fight, and I have seen sparks of joy come from you as well. Kore and I are happy here with you and Baki. Today has been the only unhappy day for a long time. Kore is hurt, that makes me unhappy. Being here with you doesn't make me unhappy in the slightest. besides, all leaders have to start somewhere right?" The boy put his hand in his pockets, the cool springtime air flicking against his naked upper body. There was a slight tinge in the air though. Looking into the distance Karite could see smoke. Thinking to himself he could have sworn the apartments where in that direction.

A boy in mainland clothes walked up through the tall grasses of the Tategami grounds. He thought he heard people talking... Yes, he did! "Finally!" the boy breathed out as he approached the grounds. He seemed pretty relaxed around lions, which was unusual for most when they saw either Baki or even Kore. This boy was seen around the village every once in awhile delivering messages to people. He often saw Shin quite a bit, since his family was always sending letters back and forth. This was the first time he had to track down a 'Tategami Maya.' "You're the Tategami's right? I've been serachin' for ya all day!" the boy said, digging into his satchel of things. "I gots this letter for ya," the boy said, producing a pretty beaten up folded letter. It wasn't even fashioned into a scroll. Tattered on the edges and written on worn down paper, the teen held it out for either Karite or Maya to take. With a low whistle the boy looked over in the direction the two were staring. "Yea, yea! There was a fire over there. I think everyone was ok. Bunch'a Kunoichi used their water powers to put out the flames. There was a bunch'a other peoples over there too. Man, oh, man! You should've seen this one blind girl get all wet. Meow, she's a vixen!" the boy said, grinning a perverted smile as he winked over at Karite. "I'll be goin' then! Hope I brought ya some good news," the boy said as he headed back to the village for the night. It'd be hard to find somewhere to stay tonight since the housing district was all smoky!
