It's the whitespace. Psychologically, whitespace sucks for your eyes and it's bland. Subtle textures makes things a bit better, and darker colors helps even more, as long as nothing contrasts too much. I don't know why Gaia has yet to introduce better web design concepts to their site, especially when they're making money. It makes no damn sense. I don't mind if it's bright, just make it more impressive.

The Darth Vizzle I don't really get bothered by Gaia's white background that much. ..Or at all, really. I'm nonplussed by it. It's not good or bad. It's serviceable, it works.

Gaia should make color schemes and all that, way, way better! Also, darker tones give a more relaxed feel I believe...

I have absolutely zero problem with excessive whitespace.
It's never bothered me, on any website.
I prefer white/grayspace to darker colored backgrounds, although it would be nice if they could make the site function properly on huge widescreens like what I use.

But as Zerdiox put it, you're not suppose to work to have to look at a site. It defeats the purpose. If you're going to do whitespace, do it right. Add more gradients, make your eyes "flow" into it rather than a big white impact. Ecks as a graphic artist can you tell you just how bad Gaia's look is.

Since Gaia is the biggest forum on the internet, I don't think they're doing anything wrong. There's a thing you can get to change the header ( mine's black right now ) in the extra features of Gaia ( Konami code, lolololol ).
Aside from that, Gaia's background follows the Gaia logo, obviously. That's why everything is white and pale blue, because of the wing logo. It's actually really nice and attractive, blends well with the usual header art and things like that.
If I was going to suggest anything it'd be a makeover of the main page. Ditch that stupid button thing and put the original gaia art back in its place. The one with that dude with the red hair, and all that junk. It's in the Gaia backgrounds section, as one of the desktop images.

...It's also basically the exact same default background for MSN.

I don't really.. have to work to look at the site.
Like I said, it doesn't bother me, whereas darker colors are actually annoying.

Ditch that stupid button thing and put the original gaia art back in its place. The one with that dude with the red hair, and all that junk. It's in the Gaia backgrounds section, as one of the desktop images. Then here's a subtle change that will make a difference for Gaia: put tiling faded graphics of the Gaias trademark wing logo on the background. Even the text would work. It'll let your eye have an easier time resting on the page and would make the posts stand out more, as if they were floating in space, just like Twitter and Mac AIM does. Cause as much as I hate Twitter, it would be a great function for Gaia to add that would change how people roleplay and chat. @Fox: Shut up, Fox! I just recently stumbled onto that site as I learned about this upcoming craze from France called Wakfu. It's surprisingly interesting.
