Toby was more of a traditionalist when it came to Valentines Day. He had planned to bake, but Maia had beaten him there. He'd gotten a gift for Dari, but not marshmallows this time. He had had far too many. A marshmallow heart with caramel, sure, but also Swedish Fish and Pop Rocks and gumdrops, plus the obligatory card about how much the alien meant to Toby, and it was honest.
Toby rolled over half onto Maia.
"Haaaaaappy Valentines Day," he slurred sleepily, and then chuckled, "Someone stayed up late~"

Maia uncovered her head to gaze at Toby sleeping. "Happy Valentines Day!" she gave him a quick kiss. "Want to see why?" she asked. Maybe cookies weren't the best for breakfast, but she wanted to give Toby something before work. "Come downstairs," she invited.

"Oh, sure. Now you're awake." Toby stretched and slid out of bed, then followed Maia halfway downstairs, ran back up, and came back down with a box of chocolate larger than both of their heads put together and a bouquet of roses, but colorful ones. Maia didn't seem like a red-rose kind of girl.

Maia came out the kitchen with a cookie the size of a pie pan. In fact, that was probably what she'd used to shape It. She held it up. "Happy Valentines!"

"Aw, love, that's great!" Toby said, "Your piping's gotten so good." Well. Better, anyway. He held out her box of chocolates and her flowers.
"Happy Valentines, love!"

Maia took the box of chocolates and set them on the counter, and, careful not to crush the roses, leaned up to kiss him. "I love you," she said. She admired the roses, putting her nose to them. "They're beautiful," she said, beaming at Toby. "I'll go find a vase!"

Toby kissed Maia back and smiled. Good! It seemed he'd made the right choice! "There should be one under the china cabinet," he said.
...why hadn't Dari come down?

Maia went to the china cabinet and found the vase. She offered the roses to Toby while she filled it with water. "What do you feel like for breakfast?" She asked.
Had Dari gone to work early? It was unusual for him not to be up to greet them.

Toby took the little packet banded around the rose stems and poured half into the water. Plant food! They'd last longer this way. Unfortunately people didn't seem to sell rose bushes at this time of year.
"Huh?" Toby turned back to Maia from the stairs, "Oh! No, let me. You already baked. What can I make you?" He moved into the kitchen, and only then did Dari come downstairs, hearing them both in the kitchen. He tried to sneak left to the bathroom but Toby heard him.
"There he is..." Toby mused and gathered Dari's things from the microwave. It was the safest place! Dari never went in there.
"Dari! Happy Valentines!"
Dari looked confused and looked Toby over and his basket of candy. He smiled slowly. "I didn't know we were still doing this."
"Of course we are."
"Let me get yours," Dari said, and did disappear, but this time back upstairs to retrieve Toby and Maia's things.

What did she want to eat? Maia considered the question. "Scrambled eggs?" she suggested, kissing his cheek. "Good morning Dari!" she beamed at the alien when she spotted him. "I have something for you too," She said. But it was something for later. How did she tell the man who'd helped her so much how much he meant to her?
"Do you want to help us make breakfast?"

"Sure," Toby said and headed for the kitchen. Dari returned with a box of chocolates for Toby and a card, and for Maia a red stuffed hippo with hearts for nostrils. "For when we're away," he said, and then offered her her card.
Toby gave Dari a hug and popped a chocolate into his mouth. "Happy Valentines, kiddo."

Maia took the hippo, hugged it, and then Dari. "I've got something for you too," she said, smiling as she took the card. "Come upstairs," She led the alien upstairs, and once they reached the top, Maia disappeared into her room. She pulled out a rather large teddy bear and offered it to him. "So you have company while we're sleeping," she said, and, setting the hippo down on her bed, offered him a card.

Dari smiled broadly and accepted the teddy. Peaches sometimes slept with him, but not always. He did wish he had someone to hold. When lacking, something worked just fine. He tucked the teddy under his arm and opened her card.

It was a hand drawn card, the cover had hearts in bright colors. Inside it read; Thank you for always being there for me. I love you, happy Valentines!
She opened her card.

Thank you for being in my life, for being my friend, and for being one in the family.
Dari gave Maia a hug and Peaches appeared blearily from his spot in Toby and Maia's room. Hmm, food time now?

Some time later, the group arrived at the office in the usual way, although Lori had been surprised to find his boyfriend at the HQ for any reason and was currently rather enjoying his company.
